Announcements for Sunday, September 8, 2013 St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Wauwatosa www.stmattslutheran.org We welcome each of you to worship. “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24, KJV). Welcome, in the name of the One who created this day for our enjoyment! Introduction for the Day: Called to contemplate the cost of discipleship today, we might be helped by translating Paul’s request to Philemon into our prayer of the day: Refresh my heart in Christ. Strengthened by the company and forgiveness of the Christ in the blessed sacrament and recalling God’s grace in remembrance of baptism, we can be strengthened in this hour to choose life in God as our own. Communion: All baptized Christians who celebrate the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine are invited to the Lord’s Table at the 7:30 service. Gluten-free wafers are available if you ask your communion server. Those who desire juice instead of regular wine, please tell this to the communion assistant. Due to the weight of the communion trays, you may be asked to take your glass of wine from the tray as it is presented to you. A library book has been given to the church library by Joe, Lisa, and Abby Chiesa in honor of Emily’s 15th birthday. Today: Farewell Lunch for Our Tanzanian Guest - Help Say “Kwaheri” as Benson Prepares to Return to Tanzania It is our pleasure to host Benson Pallangyo from our sister parish in Tanzania. Benson works with children in the Compassion International Program, including the students we sponsor. We’d like to give him a warm send-off as he concludes his first visit to the US, so join us in saying kwaheri (good-bye) and nzuri safari (good journey/bon voyage) at a farewell lunch following the 11:00 service on September 8th. Sign up at the Welcome Center, by calling the church office, or online at http://tinyurl.com/pdgfd6g. Quiet in the Commons! During 7:30 worship service, those arriving for the 8:30 worship service are asked to quiet their conversations in the Upper Commons. Sound travels well from the Commons into the Sanctuary, particularly during quiet portions of the 7:30 worship service. Thanks for upholding the reverence of worship by allowing others to focus on the worship service.

“God’s Work. Our Hands” Sunday is Septem-ber 8th We, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), are celebrating our 25th anniversary in 2013. We celebrate under the theme “Always being made new.” It is an oppor-tunity for us to remember that our church is one that is deeply rooted - and always being made new. Our roots are in Scripture, tradition and the Lutheran Confessions, as well as in the vibrant communities and rich histories of our congrega-tions. On September 8th St. Matthew’s will be joining with many churches throughout the country to honor our anniversary with a dedicated day of service. The theme, “God’s Work; Our Hands,” is meant to offer everyone an opportunity to serve and experience what it means to be part of addressing the needs of our community. From 9:45-10:45 we will offer hands-on service opportunities throughout the church. Children and youth will be involved as well through Sunday school activities geared towards the church-wide theme, “God’s Work Our Hands!” “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new

creation; the old has gone, the new has come”! 2 Corinthians 5:17

The issue is very important for Ruth and Steve Mielke of our congregation who have a 18 year nephew on the heart transplant list. Please come and learn more about COTA and the importance of organ donation (www.cota.org and www.unos.org). Facilitated by Steve and Ruth Mielke

Cross Lutheran Church Tutoring Needed - An Opportunity for You?If you enjoy helping a kid to “learn the basics” there may be an opportunity for you. Our partner church Cross Lutheran, in collaboration with Fox Point Lutheran, is expanding this fall in their second full year of a youth tutoring program. If St. Matthew’s can create a pool of volunteers, we could help Cross expand their program into the 4th to 6th grade years. The program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. including a shared meal we would collaborate on bringing to the tutored kids. As part of a team your skills and availability could be shared to fill the needs of the program. No need to tutor 2 nights per week. Learning materials and guidance are included. They would like to begin the program expansion later this fall. We look forward to hearing from you. Please find out more by contacting: Dave Weinberg-Kinsey (414-202-9525) or Pr Margaret.

“Keep it Moving... Keep it Safe”!

We are pleased to welcome everyone to worship, service and education on Sunday mornings at St. Matthew’s. Our building is a busy place and so is our parking lot! We have observed that the parking lot area near the entrance doors is especially busy from 10:40-11:00, when Sunday School students are leaving and 11:00 worshippers are arriving.

To ensure the safety of our children and to promote safe access to worship we are asking parents who are picking up children from Sunday School to “Keep it Moving...Keep it Safe!” This is similar to what many schools do. Here’s how it works:

• Please try to park your vehicle in a parking spot and enter the building to wait for your child to be released from Sunday School.

• If your child is waiting outside you may stop in front of the education doors to pick them up.

• If your child has not been released yet, please continue to drive forward, circle left onto Milwaukee Avenue and re-enter the parking lot.

• A Welcome volunteer will be directing cars to “Keep Moving” if the child is not available for pick up.

Parking Lot Welcome Volunteers are needed! If you are a Sunday School parent and could help just one morning this year please contact [email protected] or sign up in the bulletin starting September 8.
