FEBRUARY is HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS MONTH and BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Here are some facts for today, February 7th: Healthy Relationship Month Fact: February is teen dating violence awareness month. Black History Month Fact: Lewis Latimer (1848-1928) was the son of runaway slaves. He served in the US Navy for the Union during the Civil War (U.S.S. Massasoit gunboat). In 1874, he invented the bathroom compartment for trains. He worked with Thomas Edison to improve his light bulb and upgraded Edison’s short-lived light bulb by creating the carbon-filament which is still used in incandescent light bulbs!

directly to homeroom - homeroom assignments will be posted throughout the building.

Be sure to note when and where your release class will meet:

On Monday, February 18th, both 4th & 5th period COOP students will be meeting in the

FINAL EXAMS: We again will utilize a modified final exam schedule for second trimester this school year. With the new final exam schedule, students may leave campus after morning finals are complete. To do this, they will need to find their own transportation. If you would prefer to have your student stay the full day to prepare for exams at school, you will need to fill out the Google Form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScwkGQ-n5mGul5aX3Dvib8FiltZDmJw5ZLVPUim91T6cs3Oqw/viewform) to let us know they will be staying for lunch and will be in attendance for the supervised study sessions.

Buses are leaving school at their normal afternoon times on these exam days. Please talk over the options with your son or daughter and make plans accordingly.

We are entering the time of year when we see an increase in Influenza (flu) and other respiratory viruses at school. Flu is a contagious illness that infects the nose, throat, and lungs and can be dangerous for children. It is spread by droplets made when someone with the flu coughs, sneezes, or talks and the droplets land in the mouth or nose of people nearby. It can also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your mouth, eyes, or nose. We take the health of our students seriously and work very hard to keep these viruses from spreading. Be on the lookout for Flu and cold symptoms in your child. Please keep your child home from school, day care, athletics, and other activities in order to rest and recover if they are experiencing symptoms of the flu and help prevent the spread of this illness. People with the flu can infect others from 1 day before symptoms to up to 5-7 days after they become ill. Keep your child home and away from others until symptoms improve and they have remained fever-free for at least 24 hours, without the use of a fever-reducing medication (Fever is 100F (37.8 C) or higher).

Flu Common Cold

Begins suddenly Slowly increase in symptoms

Severe Cough Mild to moderate cough

Achy Muscles None to mild aches

Sometimes stuffy, runny nose Usually stuffy, runny nose

Extremely tired A little tired

Fever- None to High Fever- None to low

May have vomiting and diarrhea

If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, your child has a long term health disorder, or is under the age of 2, consult with your doctor as needed. For more information visit www.cdc.gov/flu Students: When arriving on late start Wednesdays, you may enter the building at 8:05 am but you may NOT be in the hallways and/or classrooms until 8:15 am. You may wait in the Bistro, the Main Office Atrium, the Main Cafeteria or Door #13 Atrium. Breakfast will be served in the Main Cafeteria and the Bistro but the Learning Center and Famous Phils is closed during that time. Door 2 (south end of the Music Hall) and Door 3 (south end out the back of the Auditorium) are both EMERGENCY EXIT ONLY doors. Do not exit these doors, or gather outside in this area, unless there is an emergency. The 2018-2019 Yearbook is now for sale for $60. Order your book at yearbookforever.com right now before prices go up. Senior Ads can also be purchased at yearbookforever.com for $90. WHS students and parents: Please be aware that students may not have food delivered from any outside restaurant delivery service during the school day. We have our main cafeteria that offers multiple food choices each day, our Famous Phil’s shop in the Learning Center that offers sandwiches, and our Box Office Bistro that has pizza every day. Lunch money can be deposited online at any time. If a parent drops off lunch from an outside restaurant it will be kept in the office area and the student it belongs to will be asked to eat that lunch in the office area.
