THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

JANUARY 21, 2018 ESUS reached out His miraculous charity to an outcast leper and to a pagan foreigner. These two strangers were attracted to Christ and disposed to believe in Him because of the outstanding miracles He worked. But it was

necessary for them to believe definitely, before Jesus would do what they asked.

The compassionate love of Christ teaches us to look to the needs of people, without judging their consciences. Sometimes their distress will be all the greater in proportion to the injury they may have done us. And no one is more destitute than the one who has lost his self-respect and is reduced to begging. Our kindness to those in difficulty will be a sign, a reason for men to believe that the compassion of Jesus is still at work.

PRELUDE Andante sostenuto F. Mendelssohn ASPERGES ME (Missal pg. 4-5; a weekly reminder of our Baptism) plainsong

THANK YOU! We are so grateful to all of our parishioners who attended and participated in the Annual Meeting of the Parish. The materials are available from the meeting in the Parish hall for anyone who was unable to attend. From Debbie Braun Thank you my St. Augustine family for the beautiful flowers on my re-cent birthday. It was such a blessing to receive and the roses are blooming still! Wisdom from the Church Fathers: Nothing humbles the soul more than the scarcity of bread and water. When the enemy wants to take a city, he first stops the food and water supplies. So it is for the ascetic; if he or she does not restrain the stomach with hunger and thirst, evil thoughts cannot be expelled. St. Sarah of Egypt (4th century) EPIPHANY WATER The Holy Water blessed for the Epiphany is available in the Holy Water receptacle in the Narthex of the Church. Please feel free to take some home with you. According to Orthodox doctrine, holy water has the power to sanctify and heal. Have each family member drink a small amount of the holy water from Epiphany. Keep the unused holy water in your home prayer corner for future use: times of adversity, before starting a new venture or trip, to give thanks, or when someone is ill. You may drink it or anoint yourself when you feel spiritually afflicted. To rid the house of evil spirits, it should be sprinkled in the four corners of each room. We have Holy Water Bottles available in the Book Store. THE FATHERS SPEAK: For Christ's presence is like that of some life-giving, scented bal-sam which restores health, enriches life and gives savor to the soul, the thoughts, the words of a man. In brief, distance from Christ means corruption and death, and closeness to Him means salvation and life. St. Nikolai Velimirovic (+1956) KING SOOPERS CARDS Debbie has 6 King Soopers cards. They are preloaded for $25 and you reload up to $500. If the card is not used in a 90-day period, it is closed. Don’t forget that this is a painless and cost-free way to help St. Augustine for purchases you would make anyway. We mentioned last week at the meeting that our revenue from the Cards is down. Perhaps you could get a card and start using it. Patristic Wisdom: Meekness is the fellow-worker with obedience, the guide of the brother-hood, a bridle for the enraged, a check for the irritable, a minister of joy, the imitation of Christ, something proper to angels, shackles for demons, a shield against bitterness. St. John Climacus (+649) SOME UP-COMING EVENTS: MARK YOUR CALENDARS.

• The Presentation of Our Lord & Purification of Mary, February 2 We will have High Mass and the blessing of Candles on “Candlemas Day”, Friday, February 2 at 7:00pm

• Saint Blaise Day, Saturday, February 3 Low Mass and Blessing of Throats at 10:00am.

• Septuagesima Sunday—the beginning of Pre-Lent is Sunday, February 4 • Ash Wednesday Orthodox Christians of the Western Rite begin the Great Lent

on Wednesday, February 21 at 7:00pm with High Mass and distribution of ashes.

REQUEST FROM DEBBIE BRAUN Debbie will be gathering letters from anyone who would like to participate for her mother, Judy Jarrett’s birthday. (Judy was a long-time parishioner of St. Augustine’s and is now living in Texas.) Debbie is asking that a personal letter be written to Judy that is “warm and fuzzy” for her mother’s birthday on 4/7. The deadline to get the letters to Debbie is 3/23/18 and if you have a picture you would like to share please include that. Debbie plans to create a book of the letters from family and friends. She can be reached at 720-289-2061 or [email protected]. Think About It: The suffering that grips the heart as a result of sinning against love is sharp-er than all other tortures. St. Isaac the Syrian (+700) CHURCH CALENDARS 2018 AVAILABLE The 2018 Church Calendars have arrived. They are very beautiful this year and contain all of the information an Orthodox Christian of the Western Rite needs to follow the fasts and feasts of the Church Year. Get your new 2018AD calendar today! Wisdom from the Church Fathers: We will see our Guardian Angel on the day of our depar-ture from this life. But what kind of meeting this will be depends upon us and our deeds. Will our Guardian Angel rejoice at our life-long repentance or will he sorrow at our careless life?
