American rock and roll band Making Movies has announced the release of their second LP, I Am Another You, out May 26. The artistically ambitious and politically charged bilingual follow

up to 2014’s A La Deriva was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and features guest appearances by Tennis, Hurray for the Riff Raff and Ozomatli. The band’s strong lyricism is complemented by their deftness to move between musical styles, from Afro-Latino rhythms and breezy cumbia beats to psychedelic rock riffs and more. As a first glimpse of the project, “Brave

Enough”, featuring Hurray for the Riff Raff and Tennis’ Alaina Moore dropped today via CLRVYNT. We encourage you to post & share!

Frontman Enrique Chi shared “The duet was born out of a kinship with Alynda [Hurray for the Riff Raff] based on our obsession with 60’s era FANIA Records tracks. Those old recordings were trying to compete with the energy of rock and roll and were inventing hybrid genres like

boogaloo in attempt to appeal to the Latino kids of that era. I guess that’s not that different from what is happening today—the civil rights issues, the social epidemics—time seems to repeat itself. The song needed a classic doo-wop vocal on the chorus and we knew that our friend

Alaina [Tennis] would be a perfect fit.”

Making Movies was formed in Kansas City in 2009 by singer/guitarist Enrique Chi and his brother, bassist Diego Chi joined by percussionist Juan-Carlos Chaurand and drummer Brendan

Culp. Enrique and Diego grew up in Panama listening to classic rock from their Papá’s collection and the traditional sounds of salsa, merengue and cumbia that their Mama loved to dance to. Producer Steve Berlin moved the band into KBC Records in Portland, OR for I Am

Another You, finishing the record in roughly eleven days. “Steve encouraged longer jams, pushing us to capture our live vibe on record, and to keep first takes, not over-think things,” says

Chi. “‘Muerte,’ for example, had a completely different groove when it started, and the jam section on that song was improvised live. The beachy, breezy cumbia rhythm of ‘Lo Que Quiero’

accompanies a lyric about domestic violence and addictive cycles.” He traces the inspiration back to Panamanian musician Ruben Blades, “he would sneak dark elements into stories that

ultimately seek to empathize and illuminate.” The members of Making Movies are socially active both inside and outside of the band. In 2012, they established M.U.S.I.C.A., a summer music camp in Kansas City for low income students from immigrant families. Partnering with local

nonprofit, the Mattie Rhodes Center, in July of 2016 the band completed a successful fifth year of the music camp and in 2017, will be launching their own nonprofit program titled, Art As

Mentorship.

The quartet will be out on the road the next few months with Los Lobos, Hurray For The Riff Raff and more. Full list of dates HERE or see below.
