HISTORYTrailnet was founded in 1988 to develop the St. Louis Riverfront Trail and a bi-state network of trails. During our first 12 years, we were a vital leader in purchasing and developing the popular Grant’s Trail and other well-loved rails-to-trails. Trailnet took the lead in renovating the historic Route 66 Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, investing over $4.5 million for renovating and structural improvements, and raising $1 million towards the Eads Bridge renovation for bicycle and pedestrian use. Trailnet assumed a leading role in The Confluence Partnership, a 200 square mile conservation, heritage, and recreation corridor being developed along our region’s Great Rivers.

With the creation of the Great Rivers Greenway tax district in 2000, Trailnet’s purpose and work evolved significantly. We shifted from a narrow focus in trail development to a comprehensive emphasis on fostering healthy and active communities. We integrated work in public health, urban planning, policy advocacy, community organizing, and bike/walk programming.

In 2006, Trailnet received an important Missouri Foundation for Health grant for our obesity prevention policy initiative, now known as Healthy, Active & Vibrant Communities. We also secured federal transportation funding for Safe Routes to School, Bike/Ped Master Planning, and other bike/walk programming. Through these and other projects, we generated the financial resources and gained the network of partners and expertise we needed to successfully shift our mission to fostering healthy and active communities through changes to policy and the built environment.

To lead in fostering healthy and active communities through innovative programs, planning, and policy that promote walking and bicycling throughout the St. Louis bi-state region.

2011 ACHIEVEMENTSThe Downtown Bicycle Station opened in April 2011 and by December 31, 89 bike commuters had become members.

The Downtown Bicycle Station is an initiative of the City of St. Louis, Missouri, completed in collaboration with key partners, supporters, and generous contributors. It is one of only a few nationwide. The project was funded in part by funds allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Downtown St. Louis Community Improvement District (CID) had the initial contract to manage the Station; the CID contracted with Trailnet for marketing and membership, and Urban Shark, the bike shop next door, for facilities and operations services.

Trailnet was a founding sponsor of the Downtown Bicycle Station.

Trailnet’s TravelGreen program, launched in 2009 to encourage bike commuting and multi-modal transportation, expanded into the Central West End, Washington University, and throughout the City of St. Louis.

Trailnet’s fourth Livable St. Louis Conference provided a stimulating forum with incredible speakers for 275 attendees.

Trailnet’s Community Planning team completed long-range plans to improve bikeability and walkability in Ellisville, DeSoto, Old North, Ferguson, Washington, and Franklin County. In all, nearly two dozen communities and municipalities interested in making their neighborhoods safer and more desirable, welcome, and vibrant have been served by our bike walk planners.

Trailnet responded to calls from parents throughout the region asking what can be done to make their kids’ routes to school more walkable and bikeable. Our Safe Routes to School staff met with and advised reps from more than 22 schools across the state and provided more than 400 school children with the basics of bike safety.

Trailnet took healthy eating and active living statewide through our expanded technical assistance program; and we added a half-time advocacy staff person.

2011 ACHIEVEMENTSWe kicked-off ShiftYourCommute.com in May 2011 and by December 31, 252 members were logging their bike commuting miles and tracking their calories burned and carbon emissions reduced.

We served breakfast to 330 cyclists at refueling stations on National Bike to Work Day on May 20, 2011.

Our popular summer-long, once a month Breakfast for Bikers series expanded to three locations throughout St. Louis.

21 Bicycle Fun Club (BFC) rides were enjoyed by nearly 8,000 riders on roads in more than 70 communities in Missouri and Illinois. BFC volunteers donated a staggering 618 hours of service. Participation in our seventh Ride the Rivers Century Ride, 593 cyclists from eight states, was our largest ever.

Over 1,000 people enjoyed 18 family friendly Community Rides through St. Louis’ most interesting communities. Rides included our annual Tour De Plants and the ever popular Literary Ride.

Trailnet launched our first Bike Smart bike safety and skills classes, taught by a League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor. Our classes encourage riders of all abilities and ages to get out and ride predictably, visibly, and safely.

Trailnet provided free Bike Valet at LouFest for over 400 riders who biked their way to the two-day music festival.

Trailnet’s Active Living Awards celebrated Derek Glanvill, REI, the City of Columbia, IL, Citizens for Modern Transit, and Mike Murray, exemplary individuals and entities engaged in unique and sustainable efforts to incorporate physical activity in every day living.

Trailnet relocated to 411 North 10th Street in downtown, just upstairs from the Downtown Bicycle Station and our friends at Urban Shark Bicycle Company.

That was sort of the beginning of it. I had a bike and I was trying to lose some weight. I weighed quite a bit more than I do now.

Actually, this is kind of a funny story. I started biking because I was lazy. That’s why I started biking. I had a truck and I had a bike and I didn’t want to have to pay to park at work. I worked downtown here and I found some free parking about 3/4 of a mile away from work. So I started throwing my bike in the back of the truck, driving my truck in, and then riding my bike 3/4 of a mile to work so that I wouldn’t have to walk seven minutes. So my trip to work was uphill all the way. My whole motivation was that when I got out of work I wouldn’t have to pedal at all, I could just coast all the way back to my truck.

So I’d get done with work and get on my bike and before long the park next to work here started looking good, so I’d ride around the park then head back to the truck. Then it was around the park a couple of times, and then it was three or four times. And before I knew it a couple of months had gone by and I was finding other places to ride, just for fun, for about 45 minutes every day. I was really liking it and I kind of got addicted to riding my bike.

One day I added up all the miles I rode. I went up the Riverfront Trail and back and added up the miles and it was about 20 miles. I thought – this is ridiculous! I could actually ride all the way from my house, which is 22 miles. I could ride all the way to or from work one of these days and all I had to figure out was how to either get there or back by bus. So I started doing that.

Shortly after that I met Stu at the bus stop and he told me that whenever he could, through the summer, he rode 28 miles each way, every work day. I thought – well, that’s crazy, for one. I’ll never do that. I started riding with him some of the time, and the more we rode the more I thought – well, I am already riding one way, maybe I could do that AND just part of the way the other. Stu convinced me to ride with him a little bit more and a little bit more and finally I went ahead and tried riding the whole trip both ways. It wasn’t like I was going to start doing it five days a week but before long I found myself thinking – why am I spending money riding the bus home when it’s just as easy to ride?

I started with one day, then two, then after a couple of months I was doing five days a week. That was last year and there wasn’t any reason not to do it again this year.

So by the end of June I didn’t have as many miles as Stu but it was 756 miles and not a single one of them was put on my truck. I’m still on the same tank of gas that I’ve had for four or five weeks now. In fact I still have a 3/4 of a tank of gas.

“I bike to work because it’s cheaper than driving my truck…”
