A world-class learning environment, HTS offers a

personalized experience through which students

become confident and agile thinkers, able to operate

independently and collaboratively in all settings.

Holy Trinity School (HTS) is committed to educational

excellence, as measured by readiness for university

entrance, and to the development of the character and

individual abilities of our students within the context of

Christian values and personal integrity.

A Message from theChair of the Board of Governors

I am very pleased to report on another strong year for our school. Tuition fees remain very competitive

with independent schools in our catchment area, and the generosity of our families, both past and

present, has allowed our endowment funds to provide increased financial aid to students unable to

afford an HTS education. Our sound financial position also contributed to a very successful launch of

the first phase of the capital campaign aligned with the school’s long-term strategic plan.

As well as financial stewardship, the fiduciary responsibilities of the Board of Governors of HTS include

governance and strategic planning. From a governance perspective, we have spent the past year

ensuring that the Board, committees, faculty and staff are provided with sufficient training, evaluation

and succession opportunities. This ongoing support of professional development has enabled a

culture of excellence, where “the right people are in the right places” throughout HTS.

Strategic planning at HTS involves looking many years into the future to anticipate trends in education

and plan our response accordingly. The world is changing at an increasingly rapid pace, and the skills

students require to succeed in this complex environment are changing with it. The Shaped by Experience

strategic plan strives to prepare our children for these challenges by providing an environment in which

creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and adaptability thrive, and ensuring that our students have

access to the facilities, support and opportunity to realize their full potential. While the most visible and

perhaps exciting manifestation of this initiative may be in the construction currently taking place at

the school, the following pages underscore the many achievements of the past year that our students,

teachers and staff have made in achieving these goals, with the wonderful support of our parents.

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I would like to thank you for your continued support

of Holy Trinity School and for entrusting us with your children’s education.

Yours truly,

Rob Wittmann

Chair, Board of Governors

2015–2016 was a tremendous year overall, and as I reflect on it, I think of our graduation ceremony,

where we acknowledged the accomplishments of our leavers and heard of their plans for the future.

All of the graduates’ academic achievements are impressive, but I would be remiss not to mention

the strong sense of care and compassion that saw them put so much time and effort into helping

others, amassing nearly 13,000 hours of community service along the way.

The students yet to graduate should be just as successful as those who have just moved on. I am

confident that they will be well equipped to meet this challenge because of the education we

provide – an education that combines excellence in teaching, creativity in curriculum and a highly

personal, technology-enriched environment. All of this gives students the confidence to aim high,

the capacity to think critically and the preparation needed to meet the real-world challenges ahead.

As ever, we also maintain a focus on the development of character and values. This remains as vital

today as it was when the school was founded over 35 years ago.

To complement the innovative education HTS provides, over the years the building has also been

enhanced to meet the changing needs of the students and faculty. As we begin a new school year,

we look forward to unveiling our new facilities for the arts and innovation. We will then move on

to the remaining phases of the Shaped by Experience construction, which focus on a brand new

Learning Commons for Middle and Senior School students and new health and fitness facilities to

broaden what we offer.

As I look back on the year, I find myself nearly overwhelmed thinking of all the people who deserve

this school’s and this Head’s thanks. Our programs are enriched because of you, and we wouldn’t

have achieved all that we have or be looking forward to such a bright future without your support.

Thank you to our families, our donors, the Parents’ Guild and all the others who have volunteered

their time. Our school thrives because of you.

I hope you enjoy this year’s review of life at HTS.

Best wishes,

Barry Hughes

The Bottom Line

Commitment to Excellent Stewardship

HTS is largely dependent on tuition fees for revenue. Donations provide approximately 4% of revenue

and are used to help fund projects that would otherwise not be possible, such as improvements

to our campus through the Shaped by Experience campaign, financial aid to deserving students, and

enhancing the facilities, programs and experiences to provide our students with the very best education.

Faculty and staff salaries and benefits account for approximately 71% of expenses. The bulk of

the remainder goes toward academic and extracurricular activities. This allocation of expenses is typical

among independent schools. It should be noted that our revenue from investments is determined by

interest rates, and these have been relatively low in recent years.

The breakdown of revenue and expenses for the 2015–2016 fiscal year is:

Strong enrollment has enabled HTS fees to be kept at competitive levels, while helping to ensure that we

continue to attract and retain teachers of quality.

tools and a school-wide environment that fos-

ter student growth. It is our community who

make our programming possible and who

contribute to making HTS a unique school.

Thank you to all of our generous donors who

supported us last year. Every gift makes a

difference and we simply could not deliver on

our mission and vision without your support.

The next few pages highlight our donors and

the various ways our families support our

exceptional school.

At HTS, our community of faculty, staff and

parents work together to build character and

develop values that will last a lifetime.

Our world-class learning environment and

engaged community remain very much a

part of who we are, just as they did back

when students were taught in the basement

of Holy Trinity Church.

The support we have received from gener-

ous parents and alumni has enabled HTS to

grow into the school it is today. Community

support ensures that we have the spaces, the

The HTS Annual Fund provides support to

enhance the facilities and programs that

provide our students with the very best

education. Your gift to the Annual Fund

supports initiatives that enrich and enhance

school life that are not covered by tuition.

As a result of our community’s generosity,

$479,026 was contributed to the

2015–2016 HTS Annual Fund.

EndowmentThe HTS endowment provides student financial

aid in the form of scholarships, bursaries and

awards. Endowment is truly the gift that keeps

on giving, as the principal gift is protected and

only the investment income is spent.

As a result of the investment income generated

by our endowment, five deserving students

receive a full scholarship to HTS every year.

In addition, a number of smaller scholarships,

bursaries and awards are awarded to

HTS students on an annual basis. In 2015–2016,

HTS provided over $210,125 in financial aid,

benefiting 25 students.

A Tradition of ExcellenceThe Graduation Endowment Fund provides financial

aid to deserving students who could not af ford

an education at HTS. This fund ensures that another

student receives the same incredible educational

experience that your child has received. We are proud to

share that we have had our first recipient of the Graduation

Endowment Fund graduate this year.

As a result of our community’s generosity, $26,483 was

contributed to the 2016 Graduation Endowment Fund.

In only 35 years, HTS has created and devel-

oped a reputation for excellence and is now

seen as one of the leading independent

schools in Canada. Our vision for the future,

Shaped by Experience, will enable this

wonderful school to become greater still.

To be a school that authentically promotes the

essential skills and competencies needed for

today’s world – such as creativity, collaboration,

critical thinking and flexibility – it is essential

that the school environment enables every

student to discover, realize and demonstrate

his or her true potential, passion and unique

gifts. The Shaped by Experience campaign

will do this by taking HTS to the next level.

To take this bold step forward, we launched

the largest campaign in our history over a

year ago. I am pleased to announce that we

have raised $8.8 million against our $22.9 mil-

lion goal! I would like to thank all those who

have supported the campaign to date – your

continued dedication to HTS is invaluable

as we set out to achieve the next step in our

school’s future. I am also pleased to announce

that we have 100% participation from our

Board of Governors.

Shaped by Experience

I urge you to give your support so that each

and every student can benefit from the

wonderful developments that the Shaped by

Experience campaign will bring.

Warm regards,

Danielle Gibb

Construction UpdateConsiderable progress has been made on the new

music and art rooms as well as the new innovation

labs. Foundation has been poured and walls have

been erected, which means that construction will

soon move to the inside. We anticipate being able

to use these wonderful new facilities and provide

new and improved programming before the end

of the 2016-2017 school year.

THE WORLD HAS BECOME FAR MORE COMPET-ITIVE NOW THAN IT WAS WHEN WE GREW UP. WE FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT EDUCATION, IN ALL FORMS, IS THE KEY TO FUTURE SUCCESS IN ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE, AND WE WOULD BE REMISS IF WE HESITATED AND THUS POTENTIALLY LIMITED THIS EXPERIENCE FOR OUR SON. HTS HAS BECOME OUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME, AND WE WANTED TO DO OUR PART TO HELP AND SUPPORT.

The 2016 HTSGolf Classic

Although HTS is a piece of the Yao family history,

they continue to see the value in the education it

provided their three daughters.

“When people ask why we gave to the Shaped by

Experience campaign, we automatically think of the

fulsome educational experience our three daughters,

Leeann ’16, Sarina ’14 and Pallas ’12, received at HTS.

It was important for us to give back to a community

that thoroughly equipped our daughters for post-

secondary life.

We are proud parents and attribute much of our

daughter’s success to HTS. Leeann and Sarina got

into medical school at the University of St Andrews

in Scotland, and Pallas at University College London

in England.

Pallas graduated from UCL and started her PhD in nu-

trition and cardiovascular diseases at Harvard School

of Public Health this summer with a full scholarship.

Sarina has finished her second year of medical school

and received two summer scholarships from the

Institute of Medical Science at the University of

Toronto. In September, she learned that she would

receive the Wolfson Trust Award from St Andrews.

Our daughters are HTS graduates and proud to say so.

HTS provided an exceptional education and an abun-

dance of experiences that allowed them to grow and

flourish throughout their adolescence.

It was important to us to support as we believe in the

school’s vision for the future. With our support, and

the support of others, HTS can continue to grow and

be a leader in K-12 innovative programming.”

The Parents’ Guild

I’ve had the privilege of volunteering within our community for the last 10 years, which has allowed me to spend time with other volunteers and experience first-hand a level of energy and commitment that I find inspiring and contagious.

The Parents’ Guild, alongside the Advancement Team, collectively acts as a conduit to build and channel community spirit. We are teaching our children the value of serving and giving back, and how it relates to the wellness of our community.

The 2015–2016 school year was an exciting time. With new and innovative programs emerging and with the kickoff of the Shaped by Experience campaign’s campus developments, the school is entering the next stage that will give our children the best possible range of opportunities.

I am truly grateful for the dedication and commitment of our parent volunteers – a great big thank you! With the volunteers’ enthusiasm and drive, we hosted many wonderful events and supported HTS in multiple ways last year. I hope to see new and returning faces out to volunteer in the 2016–2017 year, as we have many great

opportunities on the horizon.

The 2016 Parent Survey

survey, five years ago. Nevertheless, this is a

below-average response across measured

schools, with the typical response rate

being 60–65%. This could mean that most

HTS parents are happy with things…

or maybe they just don’t like completing

lengthy surveys!

The vast majority of those who responded

rated their satisfaction with the school as

either high or very high. On a 5-point scale,

97% rated their satisfaction as at least 3,

with 81% scoring it at 4 or 5!

We would like to thank all those who took

the time to complete our parent survey. The

purpose of the survey was to have a better

understanding of the market served. As a

result, we will be poised to respond more

effectively to the needs and interests of

our families, which ultimately will lead to

improved efficiency and family satisfaction.

In total, 257 completed questionnaires were

received, which represents a participation

rate of approximately 47.6%. This is virtually

identical to the response rate in the last

students with all the support they want.

Perhaps related to this, the survey indi-

cates that parents whose children spend

more than three hours on homework per

night report lower overall satisfaction with

HTS. Consequently, we will be engaging

our teachers in a discussion about the

cost-benefit trade-off associated with

volume of homework.

Many areas were highlighted as strengths,

including Chapel, the positive interaction

between teachers and students, communi-

cation, the warmth of our community and,

perhaps not surprisingly, the very effective way

we integrate technology into our program.

Parents also like that the children are regularly

challenged to meet their potential and that we

encourage a love of learning in our students.

In the last survey, parents expressed some

concerns around student engagement in

non-athletic extracurricular activities, the

development of study skills and communica-

tion, particularly with university counsellors

and administrators. We are delighted to see

that the effort we have put into improving

these areas has paid off, with all receiving

much higher ratings in this survey.

We don’t just rest on our laurels when we

achieve success, so we will continue to work

to improve even further. We will be paying

particular attention to a few opportunities:

· While we are pleased to report greater

satisfaction with communication between

parents and the school, we have already

started to explore ways to improve one-on-

one communication specific to individual

students’ particular needs.

· We’d like to reduce the number of parents

who engage outside tutoring services

for their children. In our experience, some

parents will always choose to do this,

but our goal is to provide all of our

HTS students are encouraged and expected to participate fully in the life of the school, taking advantage of the wealth of co-curricular activities open to them. Team sports, school trips, musical and theatrical productions, student clubs, fundraising events, leadership opportunities, and community service programs provide mind-broadening, skill-building and horizon-expanding experiences. By venturing out of their comfort (and competency) zone, our students learn to adapt to different situations, rise to new challenges, take on new responsibilities, and discover new passions – skills that will serve them well beyond HTS.

In Memory

The HTS community is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Mr. Jeffrey McGee on June 20, 2016. Mr. McGee was a Middle School music teacher at HTS for nine years. He was well liked and a great supporter of the HTS community, even in retirement. Mr. McGee will be greatly missed.
