St. James’s Hospital Foundation is the official charity associated with St. James’s Hospital

– a teaching hospital of Trinity College Dublin.

What we do

St. James’s Hospital Foundation is mandated

by St. James’s Hospital Board to facilitate

and attract private investment in St. James’s

Hospital; investment to enhance the

facilities, education and environment for

leading-edge research and innovation –

aimed at providing world-class care for

the maximum number of patients.

The Foundation is established as a limited

company separate to St. James’s Hospital.

DONATIONS

St. James’s Hospital is grateful to receive

donations from former patients and their

families and friends – and friends in general

of the hospital. We process donations on

behalf of the hospital and disburse them.

General donations are disbursed within

the hospital through a competitive process.

Donations dedicated for a specific

department or purpose are ring-fenced

and disbursed accordingly.

SPECIAL FUNDS

We set up Special Funds on behalf of

individuals within the hospital who

fundraise for their own departments –

these Funds provide a secure and

accountable way for individuals to

receive donated income.

FUNDRAISING

We raise funds for the enhancement

of St. James’s Hospital.

I take great pleasure in presenting the annual accounts

and report of St. James’s Hospital Foundation for 2006.

Organisations such as the Foundation face increasing

scrutiny, and our work during 2006 has emphasised the

development of internal processes that will ensure

transparency and accountability in how we process and

manage our resources.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board members

and those who serve on the Grants Committee and I would like to thank

the St. James’s Hospital Board for their continuing commitment to the

Foundation. I would like to thank all those others within the hospital who

have co-operated with the Foundation during the past year.

And most of all I would like on behalf of the Foundation and the hospital to

thank all those who have given – financially, with their time, advice and

contacts – during the past year. Members of St. James’s Hospital staff will

plan staff education and new patient initiatives this year that would have

been impossible without their contribution.

Exciting times lie ahead for St. James’s Hospital. Hospital management have

been working during the last year on a development plan for St. James’s.

Developments planned will accommodate increased numbers of patients

and new patient services, and will provide better education and research

possibilities for staff.

While the main developments and planned new initiatives at St. James’s

must in large part be funded by government, it is unrealistic to expect a

government of any political persuasion to fund totally the excellence being

sought at St. James’s. Private giving will always be needed – to make the

difference between the ordinary and the extraordinary.

Sources of donated income

DONATIONS TO SPECIAL FUNDS

During 2006 we were responsible for

processing and disbursing donations

received in connection with seven

Special Funds managed on behalf of

individuals and departments within the

hospital. These Funds are restricted to

the following purposes: Cardiac

Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation for Burns

and Plastics patients, Lung Cancer

Research, Education of Day Surgery

staff, enhancement of the Respiratory

Patients’ Day Care Centre, ICU Research

and ICU patient welfare.

GENERAL DONATIONS

St. James's Hospital Foundation and St.

James's Hospital are always grateful to

former patients, their friends and

families, friends and supporters of the

hospital, and indeed members of

hospital staff, who commit their time

and energy to fundraise for St. James's.

We are in awe of the imagination and

energy committed to fundraising on our

behalf. Voluntary fundraising activity

undertaken on our behalf during the

past year has included parachute

jumping, organised pub quizzes, long-

distance walking in Spain, long-distance

running in Ireland. Other initiatives

have included shopping centre waterfall

collections and collections of cash for

St. James’s in lieu of wedding gifts.

In some cases donations are given for

the general benefit of the hospital –

these are disbursed within the hospital

for new projects and initiatives through

a competitive process adjudicated by

the Foundation Grants Committee.

In many cases donations are given for

specific purposes within the hospital –

these funds are ring-fenced accordingly

and sanctioned for disbursement by the

Foundation Grants Committee.

CONCOURSE POOL

Coins thrown into the pool in the

hospital concourse are considered by

St. James’s Hospital Board to be

donated income. The income is

classified as given for the general

benefit of the hospital.

How funds are being used

DISBURSEMENTS FROM SPECIAL

FUNDS AND RESTRICTED DONATIONS

19 individual disbursements were

made during 2006. These covered staff

participation in training courses, staff

attendance at conferences, contributed

to staff research programmes, contribu-

ted to the cost of running a conference,

covered the cost of a gardening therapy

programme for patients and covered

the cost of diagnostic software and

enhanced patient amenities.

STAFF EDUCATION

The proceeds of the Golf Classic were

reserved for staff education. The

Foundation Board approved bursaries to

be given to 25 members of staff during

2007 to finance or part-finance their

participation in a range of courses and

conferences – all with the purpose of

enhancing the care for the maximum

number of patients.

GENERAL DISBURSEMENTS

The Foundation Grants Committee ran a

competition for staff during the autumn

to allocate general donations received

during 2005 and 2006. 17 grants were

approved for innovations in the hospital

relating to patient care, education of
