S
2016-17 was a busy year for the Embassy, as we celebrated the opening of new, exciting spaces, including the ballroom and rooftop patio, in March 2016. Community support for this $10 million project allowed the Embassy to earn $317,000 in new net revenue, meaning the Vision for
the Embassy project is a programming and economic success for the organization and region. Capital work continued with the replacement of 30-year-old theater carpet and renovation of the original dressing rooms in summer 2017.
As the Embassy looks toward its 90th birthday—we are celebrating throughout all of 2018—a renewed focus on programming is taking place. We launched a Marquee Gala featuring Broadway star Billy Porter. We continued with the second season of Summer Nights in our ballroom and rooftop patio. And SCORE!, Study Trips, Down the Line and Festival of Trees remain robust fan favorites.
The board and staff participated in strategic planning and will be working to grow more of our own Embassy Presents programming as a result. This means a closer relationship with our members, ticket buyers and community as we explore what you want to see and do at the Embassy. Thank you for keeping us strong and for your support!

SCORE! A Musical Theater Workshop
The Embassy Theatre’s originated programming plays an ever-
important role in bringing audiences to the historic theater. Established
programs like Festival of Trees and Down the Line continue to draw
visitors to the Embassy from throughout the region and allow them to
experience the largest self-sustained historic theater in the state.
The Summer Nights series showcases the Embassy’s newest spaces,
offering patrons the opportunity to enjoy live local music and
entertainment while relaxing on the Parkview Health Rooftop Patio
with a tremendous view of the growing Fort Wayne cityscape.
Looking to the future, the Embassy will grow the theater’s offerings
to the community and northeast Indiana region as well as expand its
educational programs in order to present the performing arts to more
students as those opportunities in public schools continue to shrink.
• Festival of Trees, Summer Nights, Down The Line,
Fright Night and other events: 30,231 guests
• Educational programming: 11,305 students
HIGHLIGHTS
Thank you to the following individuals who assist with the
planning and logistics of the many educational programs the
Embassy presents throughout the year:
![Page 4: ANNUAL Annual REPORT report - Embassy Theatrefwembassytheatre.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/2016-17...2016-17 annual report 41,536 2 0 1 6 - 1 7 A T E N D A N C E 2 2016-17 annual](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051916/6007d5dba53ead40262b9e6a/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
With the Indiana Hotel renovation complete, 2017 proved to be a busy year
beyond traditional stage shows. A full year of new rentable venue space options,
including the two-story ballroom and rooftop patio, proved popular with bridal
parties and also corporate holiday celebrations, luncheons, conferences and
pre-show events. The year ended August 31, 2017, with total revenue of
$3,034,216 and marked the 12th consecutive year in the black. The Embassy
retains strong cash reserves as well as an additional $957,901 in investments;
this is up more than 17 percent from the previous year.
Contributions are down from the prior year due to the 2016 Vision for the
Embassy gift from IEDC/Regional Cities. The Vision project was then fully
funded, leaving the Embassy with no debt. Although overall attendance was
down slightly from the prior year, corporate and special event attendance
was significantly higher – and attributed to an increase of diversified revenue
streams from various building rentals, catering and hospitality services. Love for
the Embassy also extends beyond the stage, with more patrons engaged in its
programming and its mission, as membership grew 5 percent from 2016.
The Embassy continues to maintain a diversified portfolio for investment
accounts. During the fiscal year, a net realized gain on investments of $1,535
and a net unrealized gain on investments of $66,821 were recorded. The
Embassy also earned interest and dividend income of $26,022 this year. In
addition, the Embassy completed carpet replacement in the theater and
renovated the dressing rooms below the stage.
With continued strong leadership, generous patrons, and a memorable past,
the future of the Embassy will shine bright beyond another 90 years.

2016-17 annual reportEMBASSY SUPPORT
MARQUEE SOCIETYThe Embassy established the Marquee Society to recognize and remember
those individuals who choose to continue their investment and
support of the Embassy Theatre after their death. The members of the
Marquee Society recognize that investing in the Embassy through an
estate gift will help preserve this community treasure for future generations.
A planned gift to the Embassy, whether in the form of a bequest, trust
or appreciated assets, will ensure the funds are available for
ongoing restoration and programing needs. Most importantly, a planned
gift ensures your money does what you want it to do.
Learn how you can join the Marquee Society through a
legacy gift by contacting Lucas Weick, philanthropy director, at

EMBASSY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMINGSEPTEMBER 2016 TO AUGUST 2017
The Embassy Theatre has played a part in the lives of area schoolchildren
through the years. Educational programming at the Embassy has grown from
a single presentation in 2006-07 to four programs serving more than 11,000
young people in the 2016-2017 fiscal year. The Educational Programming at
the Embassy Theatre includes:
Learn it Live, a free show for area schoolchildrenEvery fall and winter, the Embassy offers a free, live performance for students.
These shows are some of the best in the country. Talent included Lightwire
Theater, Black Violin and Hypnotic Brass.
SCORE! A Musical Theater Workshop for Middle School StudentsThis program allows middle-school students to explore creative expression.
Through this three-week summer intensive experience, students devise, create
and produce a piece of original musical theatre based on their perceptions
and then perform it on the magnificent Embassy stage. Space is limited to 25
students in grade 6, 7 or 8.
Study Trips The Embassy offers three Study Trips that connect students with real-life effects
of historic preservation on a community arts treasure. During the 2016-2017 fiscal
year, more than 1,700 students were served by this program targeting grades 1-5.
• Commitment to Community Taking a bow on the Embassy stage, students act out history and learn
how a community chose to save the historic theater from the wrecking
ball. Students use analysis and application of information as they
investigate the building for 2-2.5 hours. Aligned to grade 3 standards, and
appropriate for grades K through grade 5.
• Entertainment Then and Now
Following the path of a patron, participants use primary sources to
compare attending a performance at the Embassy Theatre in 1928 to
today. 90 minutes. Appropriate for grades K-5. Great for Scout troops,
clubs and other groups.
• Shapes, Sights, Sounds and Surfaces
Explore the Embassy through the senses. Appropriate for ages 3 to 5.

THE SWEETWATER DRESSING ROOMS
The Embassy Theatre completed a successful renovation of its original
backstage dressing rooms. The project was funded in part by Chuck and Lisa
Surack and Sweetwater; David, Janet and Natalie Bell; and the English, Bonter,
Mitchell Foundation. Design of the updated dressing rooms was done by Moake
Park Group and construction completed in just over five months by Weigand
Construction.
Last updated in 1995, the dressing rooms now boast many modern features. The
Embassy hosts artists from around the world and has a growing reputation as a
world-class venue. The dressing rooms used more than 200 days every year by
nearly 6,000 artists, crew members, music and dance competition participants
and other visitors.
The renovation of the dressing rooms reflects the Embassy’s commitment to
quality and excellence and has made the area more attractive and durable in the
face of a busy schedule.
THEATER CARPET
This past summer, the Embassy Theatre’s 30-year-old carpet, which had
served at least 30 million patrons, was replaced. The Embassy contracted
Stuart|Jackson LLC, a firm specializing in historic carpet production, and NFIC, a
nationally recognized firm, to install the carpet. The carpet was made in the USA
by Bloomberg.
The carpet design is a reproduction of the carpet originally installed in the
Embassy (then Emboyd) in 1928. Maintaining the historic integrity of the theater
was of paramount concern. To many visitors, the new carpet was a seamless
transition as the design is historically accurate. In total, 2,090 square yards of
carpet were successfully installed in just three weeks’ time.

BLUE JACKET PARTNERSHIP
EMBASSY NEWS
The Embassy Theatre and fellow Fort Wayne nonprofit Blue Jacket began a partnership in 2017 that will keep the historic community treasure in excellent condition while creating jobs, job training opportunities and access to the arts for Blue Jacket clients.
Known for its successful job re-entry training for ex-offenders and others who need assistance in entering the job market, Blue Jacket assumed responsibility for maintenance at the Embassy in April 2017. Working closely with Embassy staff, Blue Jacket clients are now a vital link in the legacy of preservation and care that keeps the Embassy vibrant and alive for community audiences. Duties include overall cleaning, facility set-up for the theater’s ballroom and other event rental facilities as well as preparing the theater’s lobby and front-of-house for all concerts and performances.
Blue Jacket’s new role at the Embassy Theatre marks the organization’s first partnership with an arts organization, according to its Executive Director Tony Hudson. The partnership provides both training and jobs, creating two full-time and at least 12 transitional 90-day jobs with permanent job placement in the community upon completion.
“The Embassy’s vision to provide the indelible and historic asset of the theater as a place to employ people wanting to prove their worth is a testament to the Embassy’s leadership,” said Hudson. “The collaboration with Blue Jacket to provide janitorial and event support services will pay off, not only in a great service but enhancing people’s dignity and family supports.”
“Blue Jacket’s mission and commitment to the community align perfectly with the Embassy’s service philosophy,” said Embassy President & CEO Kelly Updike. Beyond job training, the Embassy will offer opportunities for Blue Jacket’s team to experience the performing arts as theater-goers, including exclusive ticketing options, according to Updike. “As our partnership develops, Blue Jacket’s team will experience the performing arts as theater-goers, including exclusive seating options,” she said.
The partnership between the two organizations won the Outstanding Collaboration Award presented by Arts United in February 2018.
