When Patricia (Patti) joined Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS) on December 11, 2012, she could not have imagined what the next year of her career as a therapist would look like.

She unexpectedly went from a per-diem clinician with a few clients, to full-time with over 35.

“Working at NYFS at such a critical time was both overwhelming and humbling. We put in some long hours in those early days, between meeting the needs of so many community members in crisis and attending trainings on the weekends.”

Patti recalls how the agency and staff were able to come together as a team, and lean on one another for support during a chaotic time.

“But this is not something our small agency could have done on our own.” says Patti.

Because of your support, we have been able to provide access to weekend trainings for all of NYFS’ therapists, which has equipped us with the expertise to meet the needs of so many in Sandy Hook and Newtown.

Patti wants you to know that your support is invaluable to our community.

Without your donation, Patti would not have the expertise in trauma work that allows her to help the individuals and families in dire need of services.

“I have to consider myself pretty lucky to be working with such amazing people.” She continues, “I know that none of this would have been possible without the help of so many across the country, and the world.

That is why I am thankful to you!”

YOUR SUPPORT, CHANGING LIVES.

Patti may not know you, but she is incredibly thankful for your support!

“What NYFS has done for my older daughter was tremendous and I will be forever grateful.”

Amy was in 3rd grade at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Her family began to notice changes that were often related to experiencing a traumatic event. Amy had become increasingly withdrawn, refused to talk about that day and about the school. The family made the decision to seek out the services at NYFS.

“NYFS is well known within the community. We decided that they would be the best place for Amy.”

In their sessions the therapist discussed with the family techniques and methods they could use to help. “Amy was encouraged to talk about anything – which was always dance. NYFS had become the only place where she was still the girl she had been on December 13, 2012.”

With the help of her therapist, Amy was finally sharing with her family what she heard, what she saw, and how she felt about it.

“Amy has come full circle in a year. She’s back to my wonderful, happy – sometimes obnoxious – preteen.”

“I can’t thank NYFS enough. It’s a warm and comforting environment that has made us feel, for lack of a better word, better. Much better then the day we stepped in the front door.”
