The Cutting Edge Celebrates 20th Year & Installs Miyano Multi-Spindle Turning Center

The Cutting Edge has grown over the years to now have 50 employees working three shifts in a 24,000-sq.-ft. facility with 17 pieces of CNC equipment (milling & turning). A unique specialty of the firm is machining for the bear-ing industry.

The new Miyano BNJ-51SY5, purchased from McClain Tool & Technology, was needed to keep up with customer demand and expand its bar-turning capacity. It features dual spindles, dual turrets, y-axis, live tooling, 12+6 tools, a 12-foot magazine barfeeder and can handle 2” diameter bar.

“This is our second purchase from McClain, we have been very pleased with their service and the performance of the equipment,” stated Shane Estes. “The Miyano is meeting all our expectations.”

ISM-KC Tours Sporting KC FacilityISM-Kansas City, an affiliate

of the Institute for Supply Man-agement, toured the Sporting Park (home of the MLS Sporting KC) facilities on September 23rd in Kansas City, Kansas.

Sporting Park is the home of Sporting Kansas City. Since opening in June 2011, Sporting Park has hosted the US Men’s and Women’s National Teams, the MLS All-Star Game, and MLS Cup as well as the US Open Cup Championship. It is referred to as the “Crown Jewel” of soccer-specific stadiums.

While the stadium seats 18,500 they boast an average at-tendance of over 20,000 per game, and have sold out 49 straight MLS matches.

Homeyer Precision Manufac-turing, Marthasville, Missouri, has built a 25,000-sq.-ft. expansion and has recently installed a new Okuma MU-6300V-L Universal Center.

The firm offers concept to assembly work in precision machining, tool & die, specialty machines, EDM and engineering.

The firm, which is ISO-certified, ITAR registered, and a Boeing Silver Supplier, works with all metals. It has CNC mills/machining centers, lathes/turning centers and EDMs that can handle material up to 600mm on pallets, 35” x 39” travels for horizontal machining, 40” x 120” for vertical machining and 48” for turning.

The addition was needed for more manufacturing space and to consolidate the Union, Missouri, facility into the Marthasville loca-tion.

The new Okuma MU-6300 is a 5-axis vertical machining center for multi-sided machining. It was needed to increase the company’s capacity and efficiency to meet customer demands.

This addition brings the total count of Okuma equipment at Homeyer Tool & Die to 25 (pur-chased through Hartwig, Inc.). “Obviously we have been pleased with the Okuma equipment and Hartwig’s service/application staff,” stated Herb Homeyer. The company also has EDMs, a brake press and a waterjet cutting system.

Industries served by the com-pany include: automotive; elec-tronics; utilities; aerospace; truck trailer; defense; food service and medical equipment.

The St. Louis Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining Association (NTMA) held a plant tour and meeting on September 16th at Steelville Manufacturing in Steelville, Missouri.

More than 100 people attend-ed and toured the family-owned company. It was started in 1959 and is a contract machine shop specializing in milling, turning, waterjet cutting and fabrication. Steelville Mfg. is well known for its work in the aerospace and mili-tary industries. It has 130 employ-ees.

A dinner was held afterward at the nearby Wildwood Springs Lodge.

In other chapter business Rokwell Industries and WB Industries were welcomed as new members.

Lindsay Machine Works (LMW), Independence, Missouri, has recently installed a new Hurco TM18L slant bed CNC lathe and is celebrating its 20th an-niversary.

The family-owned firm offers manual and CNC milling/turning (including large-capacity 4 & 5-axis machining), grinding, horizontal boring, light fabrication and welding.

“We are excited to add the Hurco TM (LMW’s 20th piece of CNC equipment) to expand our capabilities and improve our operation,” stated Mike Lindsay, who owns the company with his wife, Susanna. Both are long-time industry veterans.

The Hurco was purchased from Gage Machine Tool. It features 25” diameter capacity and 79.4” in length with an 8” through hole. “Most of our CNC equip-ment has been purchased from Dirk (Gage) and we have been very happy with the performance of the equipment and Gage’s service,” stated Lindsay.

LMW’s large conventional lathes handle parts up to 39” x 120” while its vertical turret lathe can handle up to 57” O.D.

The company’s 20 employees are in a 17,000-sq.-ft. plant and work with carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and plas-tics.

LMW’s full-service welding depart-ment includes Tig, Mig and stick welding, while a plasma cutter, shaping and light duty bending equipment assist in fabrica-tion.

Industries served by the company include: transportation, medical, food processing, construction, defense, plant operations, environmental, wastewater treatment solutions, printing and many more. LMW also specializes in emer-gency repairs.

Recently we spotted a bumper sticker that asked: “Where the heck is Easy Street?

We’ve never lived on Easy Street or noticed one in our travels, but our best guess is that it might be in Washington D.C. The only reason to think that is be-cause our leaders back there seem quite contented with their lives, the economy and are concerned mainly with positioning themselves for the next election so they can stay in the East.

However, some of us in “fly-over” country remem-ber back when we used to be worried about our nation-al debt? (It’s now almost $18 trillion.) Or the fact we’re borrowing 34 cents of every dollar the government spends? Or when there was a crisis with social security and medicare/medicaid funding? Or when student loan debt topped a trillion dollars? (It’s now $1.3 trillion.)

Thinking about these problems and the folks we’re counting on to solve them reminded us of a book that came out this year titled: Why Government Fails So Often: And How It Can Do Better. The author, Peter H. Schuck, is a Yale law school professor, Obama support-er, and former official under President Jimmy Carter. He says, “I support many public programs, and as a citizen I take no pleasure (indeed, I am dismayed) in finding how often my government fails...”

Schuck looks at the vast number of federal pro-grams on the domestic level. He zeros in on the actual cost-benefit of these programs, not just the good inten-tions. He says so many costly programs cause a great deal of harm which offsets any benefits.

One of the “harms” is what Schuck calls the, “gov-ernment promoted moral hazard.” This type of program encourages citizens to take more financial risks than they are equipped to handle. One example of this was when the government was pushing home-ownership through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, leading us into the current recession. Schuck calls this program an “un-mitigated disaster” along with the ethanol program and the war on drugs.

Unfortunately, the government failed to learn from this disastrous mistake and Schuck says the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) is still following these agencies’ examples.

Another moral hazard, according to Schuck, is the $1.3 trillion student loan program featuring federal

guarantees. He believes this “debt overhang” will certainly slow the recovery. A major problem is that Congress calculates the risk of a student loan default to be the same as a default by the U.S. Treasury on its debts, which is absurd, he says.

Schuck thinks Social Secu-rity has been a success, but that Medicare has been unsuccessful. In the end, he thinks the problem (which will be no surprise to you) is that politicians focus on being re-elected. They keep the vot-ers happy by spending borrowed money that won’t have to be paid back until the representative is long out of office.

While taxpayers may be upset with their representatives, most voters seem to take a “You can’t fight City Hall” approach and leg-islators are left to turn out a steady stream of plans and regulations.

Randal O’Toole, Cato In-stitute, is especially concerned with “government planners who believe property rights are flex-ible and can be changed on a whim. Planners’ predictions of the future are no better than anyone else’s, so their plans will always be flawed and those flaws lead to more ‘grief and pain’ than joy.

“Everybody plans. We plan workdays, we plan our careers, we plan retirement. But private plans are flexible and we happily change them when new informa-tion arises.” (We might add that in the private sector, happy or not, projects that continue losing money are quickly scrapped.)

“In contrast, as soon as a government plan is writ-ten, people who benefit from the plan form special interest groups to ensure that the plan does not change, no matter how costly it proves to be to society as a whole.”

O’Toole certainly expects government agencies to plan their budgets and various projects. Where they go astray is when they write long-range comprehensive plans (5 to 50 years or more) which attempt to account for all of the various side effects of agency actions, or plans that try to control other people’s land and re-sources.

Who are these plan writers? According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States has some 38,000 urban and regional professional planners.

“Almost all belong to the American Planning As-sociation, which reports that two out of three of its members work for government agencies. Most of the rest work for private consulting firms that either con-tract to government agencies or help private developers negotiate the complicated planning mazes that must be followed to build any project,” O’Toole concludes.

So, governments need to make plans, but the days of pretending to know what will happen in 50 or 30 or even 5 years are over. We need yearly cost/benefit checks and many more “sunset” clauses to get rid of harmful laws and regulations.

HF Rubber Machinery (HFRM), Inc., Topeka, Kansas, has installed a new Hwacheon HT-850 BBL YMC heavy pipe turning center.

The 54-year-old firm offers design, manufacturing, mainte-nance, and rebuilding services to the rubber processing industry (tire and technical rubber goods) worldwide. Examples of equip-ment the firm produces includes rubber mixers, extruder screws, mills, as well as field service.

“The Hwacheon met our technical needs perfectly and even fit our budget,” stated HFRM’s Grant Schenewerk, manufactur-ing engineer. “This machine is so rigid it has not moved since initial leveling in June and can hold 2 tenths over the whole length of Z-

axis travel. Maruka has been very responsive with correcting issues found during startup, mainly from aftermarket options.”

HFRM is ISO certified and is a division of the HF Mixing Group, a global leader in rub-ber processing equipment and machinery. The firm operates in a 62,000-sq.-ft. facility with 80 employees.
