DEAN’S MESSAGE: As we all appreciate the wonderful outcomes of the recent site visit by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), I want to take this opportunity to recognize the key role that the members of Omega Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon played in ensuring the success of the 2010 accreditation site visit.

The stakes were high and the scrutiny, as expected, was intense, but NYUCD was more than ready. Throughout the past two years of site visit preparation, Omega Chapter members have been instrumental in ensuring the rigor and thoroughness of our review of requirements, refining policies and procedures, and measuring performance. Thanks in large part to your efforts, the site visitors were impressed by the sophistication of our education, research, and

patient care programs and, in particular, by the collaboration, congeniality, and communication among our faculty, students, administrators, and staff that you have done so much to foster.

The site visitors’ findings are a tribute to Omega Chapter’s continuing deep commitment to the creation of an environment for excellence at NYUCD – even when a site visit isn’t around the corner – and always looking for ways to do even better.

I offer all of my colleagues in Omega Chapter my hearty congratulations on your many contributions to the academic life of our institution on an ongoing basis and, in particular, on your specific role in advancing the level of scholarship at NYUCD, which the site visitors found noteworthy. I am very proud to be your Dean

Sincerely,

Charles N. Bertolami, DDS, DMedSc Herman Robert Fox Dean

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors of Omega Chapter, it is my privilege and honor to welcome you into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the National Honors Dental Society. Your induction pays tribute not only to your academic achievements but also to your continued professionalism and ethical behavior during your years at the New York University College of Dentistry. You are looked upon as the leaders of your profession, a symbol of the level of behavior each that all should strive to achieve through practice of the Art and Science of Dentistry. We feel confident that you will continue to demonstrate the same degree of knowledge, care for patients’ concerns, professional collegiality, and ethics that you have evidenced while at NYUCD.

It is hoped that your years at the College have been an exciting and productive learning experience and that, as you go further with your training or into private practice, you will look back at the years spent here with a well deserved feeling of accomplishment. For the past years, you have been our students. Now, we greet you as colleagues – fellow members of the honored profession of dentistry. Now it is your turn to help with the development of the next generation in the profession. Some will achieve this by following a path of academic dentistry, whether it is through teaching at a Dental college full or part time or serving as professional staff at a training hospital where you supervise residents. Others may accomplish this, later in their careers, by taking a new graduate “under their wing” as an associate in their private practice. Some will serve the greater community by publication of clinical observations (case studies) you have encountered. Finally, some may be invited to participate in clinical trials. All of these improve the general state of knowledge in the field an advance the overall science of dentistry.

Whatever you choose, may it bring you success and may you truly enjoy the voyage you are about to embark upon. Spending your life doing something you truly love is one of the greatest gifts that can be bestowed upon someone. We congratulate you and your families and wish both a happy, healthy and productive life in the future and hope you will fondly remember NYUCD and OKU and participate in our future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Martin Roy, Ph.D. President

OMICRON KAPPA UPSILON OMEGA CHAPTER

Omicron Kappa Upsilon is a National Dental Honor Society founded in 1914 at Northwestern University School of Dentistry. The New York University College of Dentistry Chapter, Omega, was founded by charter on June 6, 1929, and is one of 51 active chapters in North America. Admission is based on scholarship and character and is determined by annual election by active members.

Alumni Members (Associate Members) are selected from the top 20% of the graduating class, as reported to the chapter annually by the Dean of Academic Affairs. From this listing, not more than 12% may be elected each year.

Faculty Members (Active) are selected from the dental college faculty and are those who have been teaching full time for three years or part time for six years. These faculty members must have made outstanding contributions to the art, science, or literature of dentistry.

Lifetime memberships may be granted to active (faculty) members who have been members for 30 years and who have reached the age of 60. Lifetime members are exempt from dues and retain all of the privileges of active members while they remain on the dental school faculty. Omega Chapter is interested in the accomplishments and activities of our members.

Please advise the secretary of your current address so that we can keep our rosters current and you can continue to receive our mailings. We would appreciate having your email address so that you will be able to receive all our future electronic newsletters which will keep you abreast of all the wonderful activities of the Omega Chapter as well as the Annual Convocation and Induction information.
