Turkey had fought alongside the Central Powers against the British in the first war. After the first world

war , the central powers had been defeated and the ottoman empire disintegrated. Turkey was very important

to the Indian Muslims as the sultan of Turkey was also the caliph, that is ,the head of Muslims throughout

34 .The Non Cooperation Movement was called off by Mahatma Gandhi . This put the congress leadership

in a dilemma whether to participate in the elections to the legislative councils or not. Certain congress

leaders such as Motilal Nehru and C R Das advocated entry into the councils to end or mend them. But they

could not get support within the congress. Therefore both the leaders resigned from the congress and formed

another party called Congress Khilafat Swaraj . They fought the elections in 1923 and won 42 seats out of

101 seats. However, the party gradually lost its significance in 1925.
