Welcome to St. Joseph Memorial Chapel and the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols for Advent! This chapel, which has been the spiritual center of the College since 1924, memorializes those from Holy Cross who died in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In the vestibule is a plaque commemorating the visit of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin who was awarded an honorary degree from Holy Cross in 1983 and who died in 1996, and outside on the Chapel Plaza is a plaque memorializing the six Jesuit priests and two lay colleagues who were assassinated at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El Salvador in 1989. The lower level of the building, which was renovated in 2003, contains the Mary and McCooey Chapels, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the Reconciliation Chapel and the Gathering/Baptismal space. Rest rooms are located on the lower level. Use the stairs or elevator to the right front of the chapel. Tonight’s celebration has its foundation in the Office of Readings from the Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Catholic Church. At the end of the 19th century, a service of “Lessons and Carols” for Christmas Eve was introduced at Truro Anglican Cathedral. In 1918, E. Milner-White adapted it for the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, England, where a parallel service was devised to mark the First Sunday of Advent. “Lessons and Carols” has been a holiday tradition at Holy Cross since 1978 when it was introduced by former College Chaplain Robert Manning, S.J. and former College Choir director Bruce Miller.
