A Festival of Lessonsand Carols for Advent

Welcome to St. Joseph Memorial Chapel and the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols for Advent! This chapel, which has been the spiritual center of the College since 1924, memorializes those from Holy Cross who died in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In the vestibule is a plaque commemorating the visit of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin who was awarded an honorary degree from Holy Cross in 1983 and who died in 1996, and outside on the Chapel Plaza is a plaque memorializing the six Jesuit priests and two lay colleagues who were assassinated at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El Salvador in 1989. The lower level of the building, which was renovated in 2003, contains the Mary and McCooey Chapels, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the Reconciliation Chapel and the Gathering/Baptismal space. Rest rooms are located on the lower level. Use the stairs or elevator to the right front of the chapel. Tonight’s celebration has its foundation in the Office of Readings from the Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Catholic Church. At the end of the 19th century, a service of “Lessons and Carols” for Christmas Eve was introduced at Truro Anglican Cathedral. In 1918, E. Milner-White adapted it for the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, England, where a parallel service was devised to mark the First Sunday of Advent. “Lessons and Carols” has been a holiday tradition at Holy Cross since 1978 when it was introduced by former College Chaplain Robert Manning, S.J. and former College Choir director Bruce Miller. We wish you God’s abundant blessings this Advent and Christmas!

Come at his call;Be joyful all;Away with mourning and with sadness! The heavenly choirWith holy fireTheir voices raise in songs of gladness.

The darkness breaksAnd Dawn awakes,Her cheeks suffused with youthful blushes. The rocks and stonesIn holy tonesAre singing sweeter than the thrushes.

Then why should weIn silence be,When Nature lends her voice to praises; When heaven and earthProclaim the truthOf Him for whom that lone star blazes?

No, be not still,But with a willStrike all your harps and set them ringing; On hill and heathLet every breathThrow all its power into singing!

And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the an-gel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
