ShriramFoundationbelievesinholisticeducationattheschool-levelfornationbuilding.TheFoundation’sschooleducationprogramisdividedintotwowings,bothservingsemi-urbanandruralcommunitiesthathavelimitedaccesstoqualityeducation.TheFoundationrunstwoschoolsforeconomicallyweakersections-oneatThiruneermalai,asuburbofChennai,andtheotheratNulakpetVillage,nearMangalagiri,GunturDistrict,AndhraPradesh.Wealsosupportsruralschoolsrunbylike-mindedorganizationsbyprovidinginfrastructure,academicandfinancialassistance.
SFacknowledgesthatfirstgenerationlearnersfromsocio-economicallybackwardcommunitiesbegintheiracademiccareerwithtwodistinctdisadvantages:theyarepoorlyequippedforacademicstudy(lackingthebasic cognitive processing skills required at school, being first generation learners) and they are furtherhampered by unsupportive, and sometimes even indifferent or uncaring home environments. Thereforemanyofthemdropbehindonscholasticachievementveryearlyinschoollife,andthegapinlearningandlearningskillsisrarelybridged.Despitethis,forsuchstudents,aschoolispossiblytheonlyaccessforpickinguptheknowledge,skillsandattitudesneededtoprogressinlife.
SF’seducationalendeavoursstrivetoprovidesuchstudentswiththeopportunitiesandempowerthemtoovercomethesechallengesbybuildingknowledge,skillsandattitudesforlifeinanenvironmentthatissafe,sensitive,andresponsivetotheirneeds.

2016-17 was a challenging yet exciting year for our school.The school strength rose to over 800. Our first batch of Class10 appeared for the Tamil Nadu Secondary School LeavingCertificate Examinations. PS Education Society, Chennai, withwhom the Foundation entered into a 3 year MOU in 2015,through itsschoolP.S.MatriculationHigherSecondarySchool,Mylapore,supportedandmentoredtheteachersandstudentsofClasses9and10throughouttheacademicyearwithaspecialfocusonsystematicpreparationtofacetheboardexams.SpecialclasseswereheldforClass10duringschoolholidaysfordoubtclarificationandextrapractice.
Shriram Matriculation School (SMS), Thiruneermalai, Chennai
ASchoolCounsellorwasappointedinJune2016.HehassupportedtheClass9and10childreninhandlingcommonissuesofadolescence,examinationstressandjoininganewschoolforhighersecondary.Healsoconducted individual student assessments for theprimary classes to identify emotional andbehaviouralproblemsandlearningdifficultiesamongchildren.Thecounselloralsoconductedtrainingandsensitizationworkshopsforteachers.TheculminationofthisworkwasthecreationofaResourceRoomandlaunchofremedialclassesinAugust2017.
Theschoolcalendarwasactivity-packedwithsports,culturalprograms,fieldvisits,ProjectDayandotheractivitiespresentingnewlearningexperiencesforall.

TheschoolsufferedsomedamageduetocycloneVardahinDecember2016withthecollapseofsomeportions of the compoundwall and temporary structures. These lossesweremade good out of theinsuranceclaimreceivedfromourinsurers.
March2017wasthemonthofreckoningwhenthehardworkput inbystudentsofClass10wasputtothetest.All53studentspassedtheSSCexaminations.ALifeSkillsandSpokenEnglishprogramwasconducted for these students inApril 2017byGigaVistasManagementConsultancyPrivate Limited,Chennai,tohelpthemfacetheoutsideworldwithconfidence.

2017-18. The staff strengthwas increased by recruitingqualifiedandexperiencedteacherstohandletherigoursofhighschool.Theteachersoftheschoolbenefitedfromtheworkshopsandterm-wiseteachertrainingprogramsorganizedinVijayawadabySFforthe25KrishnaDistrictSchools.MonthlyvisitsbySF’sMobileScienceLabcreatedexcitementandincreasedinterestinscienceintheUpperPrimaryclasses.Danceandmusicclasseswerestartedtogivethechildrenexposuretoourrichtraditionandculture.Theschooltookadditionallandonleaseforbuildingmoreclassrooms and providing a large playground. After theendoftheacademicsession,workwastakenuponthenewschoolbuildingalongwithtoilets,drinkingwaterandhandwashfacilities,multi-purposehall,parents’waitingroom,outdoorplayequipmentandotheramenities.

TheFoundationiscommittedtoimprovingthequalityofeducationbyworkingwithsmallruralschoolsinthesouthernstates.Thisworkstartedin2009inNagapattinamdistrict,wherethefoundationsupportedthesettingupofSriSriVidyaMandir,aschoolfortheTsunamiaffected,inassociationwithArtofLivingFoundationandInternationalAssociationforHumanValues.VSRMontessoriSchool,ReddivaripalleVillage,ChittoorDt.,AndhraPradesh,wassupportedbytheFoundationduringtheperiod2011-15.ShriramFoundationbecameassociatedwithShriramPrajnaBharatiVidyaKendrainNitturvillageShimogadistrictin2013.
Anambitious5-yearprogramwaslaunchedin2015,wherewehaveundertakentoimprovethequalityofeducationin25ruralbudgetprivateschoolsinKrishnaDistrict,AndhraPradeshwhichserveeconomicallyweaker sections. The program is built around all-round improvement in the schools through creationofessentialinfrastructure,teachertraininganddevelopmentandprovidingsupportforco-curricularandextra-curricularactivitiesforstudents.
ASER Test (Students) Teacher Assessments
2016-17 started with the baseline assessments for teachers and students to set benchmarks and planinterventions.GrayMattersIndia,aHyderabad-basedcompanywithextensiveexperienceinassessmentsacrossIndia,conductedtheassessmentsforteachersinEnglish,Science,MathematicsandGeneralAbility.StudentsofClasses4,6and9weretestedonScience,MathematicsandGeneralAbility.PrimarystudentswerealsotestedforEnglishreadingandcomprehensionusingASERmethodologyandinstrumentsbytheFoundationteam.Pre-primaryenvironmentswereassessedbyAndhraMahilaSabha,StateResourceCentreforEarlyChildhoodEducation,Telengana,througharapidsurveyoffourrandomlyselectedschools.
Lookingatthebaselineassessments,aneed-basedapproachforteachertrainingwasdeveloped.Term-wisetrainingprogramsbasedonthecurriculumforthattermandfocusingonstrengtheningconceptualclarityandactivitybasedclassroomtransactionswereconductedbyengagingsubjectexperts.
The pre-primary teacher training was launched with a Seminar on Early Childhood Education held atVijayawadaonJune8.EminentspeakersincludedProfessorLakshmi,President,AndhraMahilaSabha,MrsMayaGaitonde,Secretary,BalaMandirResearchNetwork,Chennai,Dr.T.Madhu,Paediatrician,VijayawadaandMs.JamunaKakarla,ClinicalPsychologist,IndlasChildGuidanceClinic,Vijayawada.TheprogramwasinauguratedbyMrsChenupatiVidya,Gandhian,formerMemberofParliamentandeminentsocialworker.Correspondents,pre-primaryteachersandparentsparticipatedintheprogram.

A 43” smart TV and Digital content basedon Andhra Board syllabus covering Maths,Science,EnglishandSocialstudiesup-toClassX developed by Digital Teacher, Hyderabadwas provided to all the schools. Globes,charts, maps, thematic display material wereprovided. A levelled English reading programwas launched by providing a “Mobile” librarykitalongwithaudiorecordingofover40books.

Pre-primary teaching learningmaterials including charts,DVDsof rhymes, songs and stories andartmaterialfordevelopingfinemotorskillsweredistributed.TeachingaidsfromJodoGyan,anestablishedorganisationspecialisinginproductionofteachingaidsformathematicalconcepts,werealsoprovided.
To create interest in Science among studentsof Upper-primary classes, a Mobile Science Labwas launched inpartnershipwithAdithyaSagaraFoundation, Hyderabad. This lab housed in aMarutiEECOvanpaysmonthlyvisitstoeachschoolbringingscienceexperimentsandmodelsintotheclassrooms. The demonstrations are conductedby experienced faculty enabling teachers andstudents to gain greater conceptual clarity andignitingthespiritofscientificinquiry.
Teachers’Daywascelebratedattheschoolswitha special gift from the Foundation comprisinga Spoken English Book, log book, pens set anda bag to encourage self-learning and practice.

DecembersawthelaunchofapilotforIntensiveSchoolDevelopmentProgramin2schools,whereMrR.V.Giridhar,psychologistandspecialeducator,assisted by the SF team, created a tailor-madeprogramtoaddresstheneedsofthemanagementand teachersof theschools.Theprogramwouldbeofferedtootherschoolsinaphasedmanner.

TheacademicyearendedonajoyousnotewithSummerCamp2017inAprilwithtwo-daycampsatfourlocations benefiting over 800 students. The activities comprised Arts and Craft, First Aid, ExperimentalScience,MathModelMaking,FolkDanceandZumba.
TheimplementationteamatVijayawadahasbeenstrengthenedwithadditionalacademicco-ordinatorstocarryoutmoreschoollevelinterventionsinthecomingyears.
SSVM is guided by the Art of Living Foundation inprovidingholisticeducationwithemphasisonyoga,sports and fine arts to build character and fitnesswhile working on the achievement of academicgoals. Every child is encouraged to takeupat leastone sport. Children shone at the zonal, divisional,district and state level competitions in athletics,karate, throwball, handball, table tennis etc. Oneperiodaweekisdevotedtodance-folkdanceslikeoyilattam, mayilattam and karagattam as well asBharatanatyam.

Shriram Prajna Bharathi Vidya Kendra, Shimoga
Shriram Prajna Bharathi Vidya Kendra(SPBVK) founded in 2005 in Nittur villageof Shimoga District in Karnataka is a trulyunique school involving the community inallaspectsofschoollife.ShriramFoundationhasbeen supporting this school since2013andhasfundedtheconstructionofacementconcretebuildingtoreplacetheoldasbestossheds in which the school began. Theschool has 258 students and 15 teachers.SPBVKfollowsMontessorimethodsandhasintegrated the philosophies of MahatmaGandhiandJidduKrishnamurthyinitsvisionforeducationandcommunitydevelopment.
Theschoolbelievesinprint-richenvironmentandactivitybasedlearningincludingNali-Kalimethod.Studentsaretakenonfieldvisitstounderstanddifferentaspectslikeagriculture,plantationcrops,medicinalplants,dairyfarmingetc.aswellasfunctioningofpostoffice,bankandgrampanchayat.ExcursionstookchildrenfromClass5upwardtohistoricalplaces likeHampi,BadamiandPattadakal.Childrenare involved intreeplanting,managinganursery,vegetablegarden,greenhouseandvermi-composting.TheschoolhasopeneditsAstronomyClubandLibrarytothecommunitysothatparentsaswellaschildrenfromneighbourhoodschoolscanbenefit.
The school celebrates important days with cultural programs, quizzes, skits, debates and elocutioncompetitions.Studentsparticipate insportsactivitiesatthetaluk levelandhavewonprizes involleyball,athleticsandtennikoit.Theschooladoptsathemefortheyearandconductscommunityawarenessprogramsthroughstreetplays,exhibitionsetc.2016’s themewas“GoOrganic–GrowOrganic”.Thechildrenweretaughttomaketoothpowderusing locallyavailablematerialandtomakephenyl for theschool’sneeds.Thechildrenmakeandsellnewspaperbagstolocalretailerstoreplaceplasticbags.Thisisalsoarevenuegeneratingactivityfortheschool.
Academicsremainthemainfocusoftheschoolwithcontinuouseffortstobuildthechildren’svocabulary,Englishspeaking,self-confidenceandcommunicationskillsthoughcurriculumbasedactivities.ImportanceisalsogiventoHindiandKannada.Theschoolandtaluktopper,MsASiriwhoscored98.24%intheBoardexams,washonouredduringaPratibhaPuraskarfunction.
Teachertrainingisaregularmonthlyprogramintheschoolwithteachersbeingorientedonchildpsychology,school culture, belief system,building self-confidence in children anddeveloping a shared vision for theschool.MrAjitaRaghavendra,facultyatAzimPremjiUniversityandAcademicadvisortoShriramFoundationiscloselyinvolvedinthemanagementoftheschoolandmentoringtheprincipalandteachers.TheschoolstartedanAlumniAssociationforitsoldstudentsthisyear.Regularinteractionwithparentsonacademicandothermattersisaspecialfeatureoftheschool.

SF supports 50 after school centres run by Single Teacher Schools, a unit of Swami Vivekananda RuralDevelopment Society. STS runs over 650 such centres in villages in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Tiruvarur,CoimbatoreandNagapattinamdistrictsofTamilNadu.
Thecentrescatertochildrenintheagegroupof5to12years.ThecentreisrunbyanAcharyawhoisaneducatedwoman(atleastClass12pass)fromthesamevillagewhoispaidasmallhonorariumbySTS.TheAcharyasareprovidedmonthlytrainingonacademics,valueeducationetc.attheresidentialtrainingcentreinUlundaivillage,Tiruvallurdistrict.Childrenareprovidedwithbooksandstationery.Testsareconductedtoassessthechildren’sprogress.
Apart fromacademics,childrenaretaughtvalues,songs,artandcraft,gamesetc.Competitionsareheldperiodically and prizes awarded. A children’smagazine “ChuttiMadal” featuring contributions from thechildrenisalsopublishedbySTS.TheAcharyaisaninfluentialmemberinthecommunityandprovidesfirstaid,emergencymedicines,counsellingandotherservicesandco-ordinatesotheractivitiesofSTSsuchasSwachhBharatAbhiyan(constructionofbathroomcumtoiletsforindividualhouseholdswithgirlchildren)andfreemedicalcamps.

Shriram School of Vocational Education(SSVE) formerly known as Shriram - IGNOUCommunityCollege,Chennai,wasestablishedin the year 2009. The foundation decidedto close the centre in July 2016 after thecompletionofexaminationsfortheAcademicyear2015-16.Thestaffwasgivenaseverancepackage. Over 200 tools, equipment andmodels with a book value of Rs.4.48 lakh,pertaining to tailoring, carpentry, electricaland plumbing courses were donated toBharath Technical Training Institute, OldPerungalathur,Chennaitoenablethemstart
TheschoolwasstartedinJuly2010atAnaikoil,NagapattinamdistrictbySFandArtofLivingFoundationfortheTsunamiaffectedvillages.Itoffers1yearcertificatecoursesinElectricalTechnician,WeldingTechnician,Non–BankingFinancialCompany(BusinessManagement)andTailoring&Embroidery.
During2016-17,48studentswereenrolled.Classroomtrainingissupplementedbyfieldvisitstoindustrialestablishments,electricitysub-station,Karaikalportetc.Studentsareexposedtoindustrialsafety,industrypracticesaswellaslatesttechnologyintheirfieldsofstudy.ElectricalstudentsareinvolvedinthemaintenanceofthecampusincludingtheSSVMSchool.
Apart from the theory and practical classes, students are given exposure to computers, Spoken English,humanvalues,yogaandcurrentaffairs.Interactionsarearrangedwitholdstudentstopreparethestudentsforworklife.ManystudentshavereceivedscholarshipsfromtheDepartmentofAdiDravidaWelfareoftheGovernmentofTamilNadu.StudentswhohavenotpassedClass10examswerecoachedtohelpthemcleartheirarrears.

In2015-16,SFdecidedtoscaleupitsskillingandlivelihoodcreationprogrambyengagingexternaltrainingpartnerstoreachouttounemployedyouthacrossthecountry.In2016-17,SFidentifiedhighgrowthsectorswithgoodpotential forplacementof trainedyouth.PrathamEducationFoundation,a leadingNGO,wasengagedastrainingpartnertoconducthospitalityandbed-sideattendantprogramsindifferentstatesbymobilizinglocalyouth.2000youthweretrainedduring2016-17.ThestudentswereenrolledunderPratham’s“EarnNowPayLater”programwhereyouthareencouragedtopaybackthecostoftheprogramfromtheirearnings.
