University of Minnesota Display & Trial Garden 2019 Flower Trial Summary North Central Research & Outreach Center (NCROC) – Grand Rapids, MN

Cultivars In the 2019 growing season, 173 unique cultivars were evaluated in field plots, hanging baskets, and/or containers. All plants were evaluated primarily in the garden, with those varieties that were appropriate being selected for planters according to size, growth habit, and the number of remaining healthy plants. In the field, there were 139 full-sun plots and 34 shade plots. As for the remaining vegetation in planters, there were 96 hanging baskets and 53 containers. Greenhouse Growing Summary Vegetative plants received this year were in fairly good condition except for a few issues with root rot and one variety arrived with spider mites. The infected cultivars were isolated, away from the rest of the seeded plants in the greenhouse to avoid any cross-contamination. The germination for seed material was overall positive, with approximately a 90% success rate. There were some issues with damping-off and insects (fungus gnats and whiteflies) in the greenhouse. The vinca and begonia varieties suffered the most damage. Some affected plants had a lower survival rate with fewer hardy plants available for transplanting. Chemical applications of Attain TR, Azera, and Neem oil were used in succession throughout the seedling’s growing stages to address insect pressures. A slurry solution of Captan 50, wettable fungicide powder, was applied to control for rots and damping-off diseases. A water-soluble 20-10-20 fertilizer was used to support plant growth. Planting Date Transplanting seedlings into the field began on June 10th at the beginning of week 23 and was finished by the end of week 24. Field layouts included rows spaced 4 feet apart, with 10 plants per plot distributed 1’ on center. Hanging baskets [12” x 7”] and containers [large: 20” x 18”, small: 18” x 10”] were potted in late June, depending on plant health and growth, with 2-4 plugs per planter. Weather Conditions and Frost Date The 2019 growing season began with overcast conditions in late March/early April. The month of April showed average temperatures and precipitation for the region. May remained cool and dry, with average temperatures approximately 10o lower than last year and 1.96 fewer inches of precipitation. Average temperatures in June finally warmed with highs in the 70s and 80s, along with heavy rainfall. The month of July remained warm with most days reaching 80 o or higher. This heat trend continued through early August. In the month of August, the longest period without measurable precipitation was 8 days straight.

Irrigation Overhead, hard-set irrigation was laid out in the full-sun field plots and flowers were watered as needed. The two shade plot locations used timers and either t-tape or drip emitters to receive water at regular intervals. Hanging baskets and containers also used timers and drip emitters to dispense water at regulated times. All irrigation schedules were monitored throughout the season and adjusted as weather conditions dictated. Weed Control Prior to field planting, the garden was tilled twice to remove weeds and prep the soil. Just after planting, Rout was applied to full-sun field plots for pre-emergent weed control. This was the only application of herbicide for full-sun locations this season. In the shade plots, Preen was broadcast after planting and Pendulum 2G was used later in the season. Cultivation was a mechanical measure used to control weeds along with rototilling between rows. Hand weeding managed the remaining weeds between plants. Disease Problems/Pest Control Early in the season, seedlings had some issues with insect and disease in the greenhouse (see Greenhouse Growing Summary for more details). Once transplanted outdoors these issues diminished and most cultivars recovered fully, with the exception of a few experiencing stunted growth. In the field, Astor Yellow developed late in the growing season and was focused mainly in the full-sun garden plots. Blight became an issue for some marigold and petunia varieties in containers and hanging baskets due to heavy rains and overcast conditions towards the end of June. Deadheading Early in the season, all flowers were kept free of blooms in the greenhouse prior to transplanting to promote root growth. Minimal efforts were spent on tidying blooms once they were outdoors. All field locations and flowers in planters were deadheaded and tended as needed in mid-August in preparation for NCROC’s annual Visitor’s Day. Explanation of Flower Evaluation Evaluations of plant performance were completed by the current staff of NCROC and also members of the Itasca County Master Gardeners Club. The plants were evaluated twice during the month of August using criteria such as uniformity, growth, health/vigor, flower quality and production, insect/disease resistance, and how unique the cultivar is. An early rating was given during August 1-15, with a late rating assigned during the last part of the month, August 16-31. Rating was based on a scale of 0 – 5, with 0 being the lowest possible score and 5 being the highest and indicating an excellent performance. All scores given by evaluators were compiled and averaged and the final results reported for each cultivar. The results for the Top 10 flower evaluations are based on the early cultivar ratings only. General Performance Summary Issues in the greenhouse posed a set-back for some cultivars, such as Vincas and Begonias. A few others were affected to a lesser degree, such as Gerberas, Thyme, and Gypsophila. This

Page 5: ANNUAL FLOWER TRIALSncroc.cfans.umn.edu/sites/ncroc.cfans.umn.edu/files/flowerreport2019_final.pdfplanetarium display, a potato patch for kids to explore, a corn maze, and much more

affected the numbers of viable plants available for transplanting outdoors. Of the 176 cultivars trialed in Grand Rapids, three Vinca varieties died early in the season. The first to go was Vinca, Cora® XDR Cranberry from damping-off in the greenhouse. The other two Vinca varieties to expire were Cora® Cascade Strawberry and Exp. Cora® XDR Deep Lilac. Neither of these survived the outdoor transplanting in June. Despite some disease and insect problems, most varieties germinated well and were very hardy from the beginning. Plants such as Gaillardias, Zinnias, and Petunias were resilient. The stand-out plant this season was the Verbena bonariensis Purple Haze, which performed especially well all through the season. Petunias in hanging baskets thrived until blight developed after heavy rains and overcast conditions towards the end of June. Most varieties, such as the Petunia, Wave® Carmine Velour, recovered well after pruning out infected material. Overall, the cultivars trialed this year flourished and provided excellent color in all field locations. Events The North Central Research and Outreach Center held the annual Visitor’s Day event on August 22, 2019. This year it included field tours, educational booths, food vendors, the Bell Museum planetarium display, a potato patch for kids to explore, a corn maze, and much more. Other events included the Crops and Forage Field Day down on the south farm in the fall and various wagon tours throughout the summer for garden groups and visitors.
