Dear IC Community,

The past year has seen noteworthy progress on a number of important fronts that will ensure that International College is positioned to

continue to excel as the premier school in the region.

Our headway on the new Middle School and Preschool buildings on the Ras Beirut Campus will result in their inauguration this year. In Ain Aar we have moved forward with our plans for a new auditorium and gymnasium. Also in Ain Aar, we made a large number of significant improvements to premises, including the total refurbishment of our science labs. In Ras Beirut we are about to launch new STEAM laboratories in the Secondary School. The new Middle and Preschool buildings, like our Elementary School buildings, will once again receive the US Green Building Council’s LEED Gold certificate. Our commitment to sustainability practices, reflected by our pioneering of the latest green building technologies, remains as strong as ever.

The school’s dedication to current environmental best practices is not

the only trailblazing aspect of the school. In yet another effort to ensure that IC students continue to excel academically, we introduced this year the Danielson Framework for Teaching. The introduction of this internationally recognized approach to education is an important development that demonstrates our dedication to being a regional leader in introducing teaching methodology that enhances student learning.

IC remains the school of choice for a large number of families in Lebanon. It’s offering of four Secondary School programs as well as being accredited by NEASC, CIS and AEFE is unique to IC. This academic offering, complemented by the choice of 96 clubs and 94 inter-scholastic athletics teams, helps to allow IC students the opportunity to excel in whatever it is they choose.

fRoM tHe CHAiRMAn of tHe boARD of tRustees


As many of you know, once IC successfully negotiated the purchase of the current IC land and buildings, the Board of Trustees, looking to the future, embarked on an ambitious campus

redevelopment and facility improvement plan. The Facility Master Plan included a series of phases, beginning with the Ras Beirut Elementary school and then construction of new middle and pre-school buildings.

Construction of a gymnasium, auditorium and parking facility at IC’s Air Aar campus in Metn is awaiting final permit approval. Future master plan phases include renovation of IC’s historic Rockefeller and Sage Halls and the existing pre-school building. In the case of these historic buildings, the stately, traditional, exterior facades will be preserved, while the interior spaces will be completely renovated.

As exciting as the above projects are, it’s what happens inside school buildings that represent the heart and soul of IC. The buildings may be keepers of memories, but the success of IC graduates is the result of what happens within classrooms and the interaction between students and their teachers. My vision of the future of IC, is building upon the school’s

long standing reputation for academic excellence through a broader definition of success, including balance between traditional strengths in math and science and the humanities, fine and performing arts, and active community engagement programs. The vision includes greater emphasis on creativity, innovation, robotics, and authentic career internship experiences in upper middle and secondary school. I see an evolving collaborative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) program, with greater access to advanced technology, handson design and application labs to put theory and knowledge into practice. Exciting stuff!

IC is proud of its history and the success of its students, both at home and abroad. There is no question that IC has served students well for more than 125 years. Yet it is the future, not the past, that is our challenge. This annual report summarizes the progress being made to ensure that the next century in IC’s historyis as successful as the past century. We are

well on the way to the vision described above, thanks to the faithful support and generosity of IC alumni, parents, and Trustees.

International College is an independent, coeducational, secular, non-profit preparatory school serving a diverse population of more than 3,500 students in grades N-12. Students are enrolled at International College without regard to sex, race, religion, nationality or political afliation. The IC community is led by caring professionals responsive to the needs of each and every child. The entrance and graduation requirements, the curriculum and selection of faculty are based on IC’s stated philosophy and objectives.

International College educates young men and women to be capable of initiative and critical thinking, who will serve as role models in a global society. The curriculum aims for excellence at all levels and embraces the education of the whole person. Graduates of IC will have developed self-discipline, problem-solving abilities, social responsibility, self-confidence, and awareness of, and respect for, the interdependence of nations in all their diversity.

Every year, International College relies on the support of the Annual Fund from its alumni, parents, trustees and friends. As is the case with many independent schools, tuition fees at IC does not cover full operating costs. Programs which give IC that margin of excellence have to be funded elsewhere, namely through private contributions to the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is made up of yearly gifts that go directly into the operating budget and are earmarked for school enhancements including financial aid, faculty development and student extracurricular programs.

International College (IC) extends its thanks and appreciation to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA). ASHA’s contributions helped IC develop the superior library, improve its security system, upgrade STEAM labs, in addition to the main IC server and provide new notebooks.
