Flag Retirement Ceremony Sunday, July 8 at 8:00pm at Mayflower & Newport
by David A. Spriggs
As I travel around CPRV, I am both heartened and impressed by the number of homes proudly displaying our national ensign. If, when a flag becomes worn and faded, you fold it respectfully and stow it in a closet,
you might like to know there’s another way to honor your old flag. Through Colonial Place resident Peter Stoll, your Civic League has
arranged with Boy Scout Troop 24 to conduct our seventh annual official flag retirement ceremony. It will take place on Sunday, July 8th, at 8:00 pm on the seawall at Mayflower Road and Newport Avenue.
We invite all residents of Colonial Place and Riverview to gather their
unserviceable flags and bring them to this ceremony. If you cannot at-tend, you may drop off your flags at the home of Pete Stoll at 4709 Colo-nial Avenue.
This is a stirring ceremony and a demonstration of patriotism for the Scouts as well as for the attendees. We hope to see you there.

Credit Cards Now Welcome by John W. Robertson, Secretary
The Colonial Place/Riverview Civic League is pleased to announce that current and prospective mem-bers are now able to pay for their membership dues using Master-card, Visa, Discover or American Ex-press, in addition to using cash or a check. Many people are familiar with Square, a credit card payment pro-cessor that is fast becoming the sys-tem of choice for many small busi-nesses. If you’ve ever watched a mer-chant swipe your credit card through a small device attached to their phone or tablet, chances are you’ve already used the Square system. The system is safe, convenient and fast. No financial information is retained by the Civic League, and receipts for your charge are emailed to you im-mediately. We are also working to implement a payment system on the Civic League web site (cprv.net) so that you can renew your membership whenever it’s convenient, even if you can’t attend in person. Look for de-tails in a future newsletter. Until then, when you pay for your Civic League membership at a future meeting, you'll have a choice: cash, check or charge!

CPRV Social Events Committee by Artemis Stoll
Hello, neighbors! I recently had an idea to create a CPRV Social Events Committee and have volun-teered to serve as the committee’s chair. Thought the summer months would be a great time to get started! I have several ideas for some fun gatherings, and would love your feedback as well. What kinds of events would you like to see in CPRV? Are you willing to help out or serve on the committee? What’s the best way to publicize a scheduled event? Please contact me, Artemis Stoll at [email protected] Thank you! PS: There’s a new CPRV Civic League-sponsored group on Face Book. To join this closed group, type in
COLONIAL PACE - RIVERVIEW CIVIC LEAGUE and click on the “Join” tab. An administrator will need to
verify that you reside within the neighborhoods. Once you join, stay tuned for up-to-date event
CPRV CRIME PREVENTION UPDATE by Laura Burns
School is out and it is that time of year again – long days, mosquitoes, sunscreen, theft and vandalism. Here are some tips to help us get through the summer: 1. With car break-ins continuing to be one of the main issues, remember to ALWAYS LOCK YOUR CAR and remove any items or
extra keys from the vehicle. 2. Keep your home locked and the surrounding areas well lit. 3. Report any suspicious activity or crime to the Norfolk Police. The non-emergency police number is 757-441-5610. If you see
a crime in progress, call 911! Our biggest resource to prevent crime in our neighborhood is each other! Nextdoor is a great resource to keep folks updat-ed on suspicious activity and when and where crimes occur. But, we need to take it offline as well. Keep an eye out for events organized by our Social Committee and take advantage of these to get to know your neighbors. The more we look out for each other, the less opportunity criminals will have to make us victims. Finally, we are reviving the Neighborhood Watch program. I am working with our Community Resource Officer, but we need volunteers. That means YOU! If you are interested in being involved with the program or if you have ideas, comments, concern, that you would like to discuss, let me know! You can contact me, Laura Burns, at [email protected] or [email protected]. Please include your name and the best way to contact you. Let’s have a great summer!

HOW TO LOCATE OLD PHOTOGRAPHS OF
YOUR VINTAGE CPRV HOME (Part One)
by David A. Spriggs
In 1988 the Civic League published a 1989 calendar which contained many old photographs of the exteri-
ors of homes in Colonial Place and Riverview. Here is a sample of those photographs.
The images were located in The Harry C. Mann Collection in the Sargent Memorial Room of the old Kirn
Library, now the Sargent Memorial Collection of the Slover Library.
Many of us in CPRV live in vintage homes which were built in the first
quarter of the 20th century. And, over the years, many of those homes have
undergone modifications to their exteriors and interiors. What would you give
to see images of your old home from its early days? Unless Harry C. Mann
took a photograph of your home, it may take a bit of research to locate such
photographs, if they exist. But, it can be done. I located the grandson of the
family which built my home in 1912, and he sent me this photo taken in 1912.
Next month, I will explain how to go about locating living descendants of early owners of your home.

Colonial Place / Riverview Civic League General Meeting Minutes
June 11, 2018; Eggleston Center
President Tobie Serafim opened the meeting at 6:35pm. The Secretary declared a quorum to be pre-
sent.
President Serafim presented the slate of nominees for President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasur-
er for the upcoming year and upon a motion made and seconded, the nominees were elected by acclama-
tion. Elected were Michael Langston, President; Jay Shurling, Vice-President; John W. Robertson, Secretary
and Dave Wolfe, Treasurer.
NPD Neighborhood Resource Officer Josh White presented the monthly report on crime activity. Stolen
autos was the major issue noted. We were reminded to remove any valet keys from our vehicles and keep
them safe elsewhere. Officer White asked that we report any suspicious activity, even if nothing was taken
or damaged, so that accurate statistics can be developed and attention put where needed.
Norfolk Environmental Engineer Justin Schaefer conducted a short update on the work along Knitting
Mill Creek and in Riverview. Construction at Knitting Mill Creek is complete except for replacing plants that
are growing poorly. Construction along Beach Avenue continues and has been slowed by weather issues
and erosion. A number of questions were asked and answered.
The previous meeting’s minutes were approved.
President Serafim presented the proposed budget for the upcoming year. A number of questions were
asked and answered. Upon a motion made and seconded, the proposed budget was adopted unanimously.
The Media Committee had nothing new to report.
The Membership Committee reported 105 members to date.
The Welcome Committee plans to start efforts in September. Plans are being made to purchase bags
with the Civic League logo.
The Flag Retirement ceremony is tentatively scheduled for the second Sunday in July, contingent on ob-
taining the proper permits.
The President adjourned the meeting at 7:17 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
John W. Robertson
Secretary
