2 THE FOREST NEWS MARCH 2020

2019 was a record year for Champions ESD responses. We responded to 1123 calls for ser-vice, a 13% increase, including 155 fi re calls and other hazards, 559 EMS, Motor Vehicle Accident, and other rescue calls, 141 false alarms, and 268miscellaneous calls. The number of responses increased from 993 calls in 2018. Our average response time was 6 minutes 17 seconds to all incident types district-wide.

CESD responded to nine structure fi res, includ-ing three residential fi res, three apartment fi res, and three commercial building fi res. Estimated fi re losses district-wide in 2019 is $114,580. One civilian was injured, and one fi refi ghter suffered minor injuries.

In addition to responding to emergencies, CESD also interacted with hundreds of children and adults, conducting fi re prevention activities, sta-tion tours, scout programs, and CERT training at Klein Forest High School.

NEW STATION 12By the time this article is published March 1, we should be moved into the new Station 12 located at 12734 Cutten Rd. Five fi refi ghters will regu-larly staff Station 12 with one Engine, the Tanker truck, and the District Chief Tahoe. Eight fi re-fi ghters will staff Station 11 with one Engine and the Tower truck.

SMOKE DETECTORSDaylight Savings Time starts on March 8. Change your smoke detector and CO detector batteries!

We have received a limited quantity of free smoke detectors from the Red Cross for installation in

single-family residences. Please contact the fi re station at 281.444.2014 or email info@champi-onsfi re.org to have fi refi ghters install smoke de-tectors in your home. It only takes a few minutes. If you have smoke detectors but would like to have them checked by the fi refi ghters, we are glad to help. We are not able to hand out smoke de-tectors at the fi re station. The Red Cross requires that we install them, that way we can ensure they are installed properly and don’t get left sitting on a counter top at the bottom of your to-do list.

Pat Garris Speaker for March Cypress-Tomball Democrats Meeting

The Cypress-Tomball Democrats will hold its next monthly meeting Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at Rudy’s Grill and Cantina, 11760 Grant Road, Houston. There is a meet and greet at 6:30 p.m., and the general meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.

Politics is dividing families and ruining friend-ships. Why are we so different, even when we are in the same family? How can people vote against their own interests? How can we better commu-nicate? Our March speaker, Pat Garris from the Spring Democratic Club, also wanted answers and has done some research. If you want tips on where to start, join us at our next meeting.

All are welcome to attend and to join this growing club, which meets on the third Tuesday of every month.

For more information, contact Undrai Fizer at [email protected], or visit the club’s Facebook page.

??? BANDIT SIGNS ??? In response to recent discussion and comments on various social media the following explanation of the term Bandit Signs is offered.

ANY SIGN in the county Right-of-Way without the explicit written permission of the County is deemed a Bandit Sign.

Any such sign is against the law in the state of Texas and can be removed. A fi ne of up to $500 per day per sign can be levied.

The Greenwood Forest HOA does not allow signs of any kind on the common areas or the Champion Forest Median.

The Right-of-Way is a designated distance from the edge of any county or state road and can even be part of what residents consider their yard. It does include all medians, speed limit, stop and warning signs and the light poles along the roadways.

Our neighbors in Fountainhead have contacted our HOA and requested that we notify Greenwood residents thatbandit signs placed in Fountainhead will be removed and destroyed.

Lastly, several Greenwood Forest residents have successfully completed the Harris County training and are certifi ed to properly recognize, remove and destroy illegal signage.

Safety & SecurityHere Are 4 Easy Ways to Secure Your Home

1. Secure the DoorsDon’t help a burglar stroll in through the front door (34% of them do!).² Inspect all of your exterior doors to make sure the door frames are strong, the hinges are protected, and—if your door has a mail slot—that someone can’t reach through it to unlock the door.

If you’re moving into a residence that someone else used to call home, change the door locks. That way you won’t have strangers out there with a key to your house, and you can make sure your locks are the best on the market.

Reinforce sliding glass doors.

Intruders love sliding doors, so make sure yours are protected. You can go old-school and use a window bar or dowel in the track to keep the door from being forced open. If you want a high-tech solution, add a door sensor or glass break sensor. These will alert you if the glass door is tampered with—and should scare off thieves.

2. Lock the WindowsDoors and windows are the most common entry points for burglars. Unfortunately, manufacturer latches on windows aren’t always effective—and sometimes

they’re downright fl imsy. If you don’t like the looks of your window latches, beef up security with locks or key-operated levers. But you don’t have to stop there.

3. Lightup the LandscapeVandals, burglars, and other criminals don’t like to be in the spotlight. Keep bad folks at bay with ample out-door lighting. Place lights around your front and back yards, along pathways, and near the garage and other outdoor structures. Use motion activated lights. Not only will you make intruders skittish, you’ll also cut down your risk of a stumble on your way up the front steps.

4. Don’t Forget the GarageThis entry point to your home is becoming more pop-ular with criminals. And even if they can’t access your house, chances are you have plenty of good stuff stored in the garage. Make it a habit to lock all doors to the garage—both interior and exterior. You may also consider keeping your garage door open-er in the house. That way a burglar can’t grab it out of your car. And if you use a security code to open the garage, make sure you keep it secret and never enter it in front of delivery people, neighbors, or anyone else.

Pearls of Art Gala

The 2020 Pearls of Art Gala, will take place Saturday, March 21, at Houston’s newest event venue, the Re-vaire. Co-Chairs Anais Watsky and Elizabeth Naggar have chosen a beautiful French theme highlighting a party in Monet’s garden.

This year’s honorees are The Hamill Foundation and Mr. Tom Brown, Grants Director. Mr. Brown and The Hamill Foundation have been strong supporters of the Pearl since its inception and were key to the muse-um’s restoration after Hurricane Harvey. The black-tie optional gala includes cocktails, dinner, and live and silent auctions. The popular Doppelganger Band will provide music for dancing. Tickets to the Pearls of Art Gala are on sale now, with tables of 10 starting at $2,500 and individual tickets at $250.

Summer Art Camps

Registration for Summer Art Camps at the Pearl is now underway, offering a uniquely creative experience for ages 8 to 12 and 13 to 18.

This year’s camps will center around a theme of “Arc-tic Explorations,” to coincide with the Pearl’s summer exhibition, “Into the Arctic.” Camps are offered Mon-day through Friday in June and July, from 9 a.m. to noon or 2 to 5 p.m. For complete details or to register, visit pearlmfa.org.

Spring ExhibitionsTwo new exhibitions are now open at the Pearl for all to enjoy. Stitched: Contemporary Quilt Art from the International Quilt Festival Collection is featured in the Main Gallery and includes a collection of 25 con-

temporary quilts from the Texas Quilt Museum.

In the Rebecca Cole Gallery, the Pearl features Lesley Humphrey: Saved by a Horse. Equestrian artist Les-ley Humphrey has been painting or drawing the horse since childhood.

Both exhibitions opened February 1 and continue through May 16. Located at 6815 Cypresswood Drive in Spring, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated and help continue the Pearl’s mission of art, education, and community. For more information, please visit www.pearlmfa.org or call (281) 376-6322.
