HB 1900 - Defining the role of the school counselor, social worker, and psychologist Testifying – Erin Romanuk, HB 1900 (at approximately 1:22:00)

http://www.tvw.org/index.php?option=com_tvwplayer&eventID=2015021073 A school social worker is a professional in the field of social work and education who

holds a valid school social worker certification as defined by the professional educator standards board. The purpose and role of the school social worker is to provide an integral link between school, home, and community in helping students remove barriers to academic and social emotional success. This is accomplished by providing services that include: mental health and academic counseling, advocacy and support for students and parents, crisis prevention and intervention, professional case management, and collaboration with other professionals, organizations, and community agencies. School social workers work at various levels and as part of an interdisciplinary team in the educational system, including at the building, district, and state level.  School social workers provide leadership and professional expertise regarding the formation of school discipline procedures, school based mental health services, crisis management, the implementation of social emotional learning, and other support services that impact student academic and social emotional success.  School social workers also facilitate community involvement in the schools while advocating for student success.

WASSW Membership MeetingDelegate Assembly in Washington DC

20 states were represented at the DADiscussion of national certification for school social

workersState report – Highlights

Several relationships with members of the legislature have been formed and strengthened over the past two years (which has resulted in school social workers included in various bills introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate during the most recent legislative session).

Even though membership remains consistent in numbers (which we would like to see a bit higher), the WASSW has been able to recruit members who are new to the profession and to the state of Washington.

State Report – Highlights The current WASSW board has the ability to access

former long standing board members. Their willingness to provide a historical perspective and information is valuable to the organization.

A quick comparison of the data from OSPI shows that employment from Spring 2014 to Spring 2015 of school social workers was up 11% in the state (from 214 school social workers in April 2014 to 238 school social workers in May 2015).
