1.2 (i) Flexibility of the Curriculum: CBCS/Core/Elective option / Open
options
CBCS / Elective option
Curriculum is CBCS where the students will undergo training of core and
breadth courses as per the stream the candidate chooses. Apart from this,
curriculum is flexible enough to undertake different electives from their stream;
student can opt for electives of other streams as open electives.
Along with mandatory subjects, CBCS also offers Audit courses where students
can choose courses to enhance life skills, moral values, performing arts and
courses like entrepreneurship. Enough credit is also for the aspects like project
work and various internships, where hands on skills can be enhanced.

a positive impact on the functioning of the institution. Give details.
1. NPTEL online courses for faculty and students –
VIIT has been working as Local Chapter of NPTEL (National Program on
Technology Enhanced Learning) since 2016. VIIT has a policy of refunding
50% of examination fees of NPTEL to the faculty who have successfully
completed the course. Due to this policy many faculty members are encouraged
to register for NPTEL courses and complete them.
In the AY 2016-17, total 219 candidates of VIIT completed various NPTEL
courses out of which, 3 have completed with ‘Gold medal’, 90 with ‘Elite’ status
and remaining 126 with ‘Successful’ status.
Students as well as faculty find these courses very useful for updating their
knowledge in various technical and non-technical fields.
2. Aptitude training:
For campus placements, the industries normally short list the students based on
aptitude test. The competitive examinations such as GATE and GRE also
include aptitude sections in their questionnaire. Hence to improve the
performance of students in aptitude tests for campus placements as well as in
competitive examinations, VIIT provides training to the students from the third
year of their degree course through T&P cell of VIIT.
A fast track revision through 6 days’ workshop on aptitude is conducted before
beginning of campus placement activity. The training is conducted by an
external agency (Students Forum) and this activity is entirely funded by the
management of VIIT. The training focuses on areas such as quantitative
aptitude, logical reasoning and data interpretation, verbal ability with pre & post
assessment tests for all these. This aptitude training helped students to score
good marks in aptitude test and get placed through campus placements.
Apart from aptitude tests, training for improving interview skills, group
discussion is also provided through T&P cell of VIIT.

Principal for his/ her improvement.
3. An Institute level Parent Teacher meeting is conducted once every semester.
During the meeting, parents are made aware about their wards’ attendance,
academic performance for the semester as well as about the various learning
processes conducted in the institute. In academic year 2016-17, Parent
Teacher meeting for the first semester was conducted on July 23, 2016 and
for second semester on January 26, 2017. The feedback collected from the
parents during above mentioned meetings are shown in Table 3 and Table 4
respectively. Suggestions given by parents were taken into consideration for
further actions.
4. Feedback about Institute is also taken from all students once in a year. This
includes the feedback about the facilities and the infrastructure of the
institute. Institute feedback for academic year 2016-17 is shown in Table 5.
5. Various companies visit the campus of the institute for the placement of the
students. Table 6 shows the feedback given by various employers for the
placement activity. Based on this feedback, Guest lectures, workshops,

Annexure IV 52
Annexure IV: Best Practices
Best Practice I: Brainstorming sessions for faculty
Title of the Best Practice
Participative planning by faculty for effective implementation of academic
activities to be conducted in the upcoming academic year through
Brainstorming.
Goal
Vision of VIIT is “Excellence in Technical Education”. To achieve this goal,
the faculty contribution and their participation in all activities that take place in
the institute is of utmost importance. Every year, before the commencement of
academic session, all faculty of VIIT participate in brainstorming activity. This
activity is generally conducted at a place with serene atmosphere, away from
the institute. Such a location is deliberately chosen as it inspires the entire
faculty to think out of box to deliver their best. This stress free environment is
conducive for creative ideation. The process of generating creative ideas and
solutions for a specific problem through intensive group discussion leads to
different solutions which are implemented during the educational activities.
The Context
Every year, areas are identified, where improvement is possible from the point
of view of the Vision and Mission of the Institute. New issues taken up in
successive Brainstorming sessions has led to continuous enhancement of quality
of education.
For the AY 2015-16, the theme for brainstorming was ‘Co-curricular and Extra-
curricular Activities for Overall Development of Students’. For the AY 2016-
17, the brainstorming was based on ‘Change in the Mindset of Faculty for
Autonomy’. For the AY 2017-18, the discussion topic was ‘Preparing for
Effective Implementation of Autonomy’. As VIIT was granted Autonomy from
Academic Year 2017-18, many reforms were necessary in the syllabus,
teaching-learning process and evaluation methods. It was also necessary to
carry out analysis of training needs for faculty and staff so that these reforms
could be carried out efficiently. All the issues related to above reforms were
discussed using group creativity technique and ideas were spontaneously
contributed by the participating members.
The Practice
Motivational guest lecture is arranged before the brainstorming activity. This
effective talk sets a high note and high energy level of the participants ensuring
enthusiastic atmosphere and sets the right tone for the brainstorming activity.
The faculty is divided into 10 groups with around 10 to 12 members in each
group. Every group is given a specific topic to brainstorm for about half an hour.
Every group then presents their solutions.

k) Need based research
Evidence of Success
This brain storming activity helped us in understanding the importance of
following in the educational activities for Autonomy:
1. Designing structure and syllabus innovatively to fulfill need of the industry.
2. Importance of industry institute interaction and motivating faculty to
increase this interaction.
3. The need of using new techniques along with traditional teaching-learning
methodology for outcome based education.
4. Use of various innovative methods for assessment and evaluation.
5. Involvement of alumni in different activities of the institute such as guest
lectures, placements, industry visits, student mentoring, etc.
6. Understanding role of faculty in autonomy and how to prepare for it
7. How to motivate self for development.
8. Identify training needs for new role.
9. How to encourage students by various methods like giving real life
examples, motivational presentations, conducting small technical
competitions, etc.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required
Though this activity is very effective, going out with almost two hundred faculty
members to a different location every year is a difficult task. Identifying a place
to accommodate such a large number, arranging transport facility also becomes
difficult. As the activity is a day activity, time available is sometimes
insufficient to complete the planned tasks.
Notes (Optional)
Offsite visits are very common in corporate world, where training along with
recreation is combined. A similar concept is used by VIIT for brainstorming
activity. As the discussion is organized at a place away from the workplace, all
faculty members are in a fresh and stress-free condition to come up with new
ideas. Even the youngest faculty gets a chance to share his or her ideas. This
creates ownership in the minds of all the faculty members.

Best Practice II: Extension of VIIT-TIFR collaboration model to
Walawalkar Hospital, Dervan - a rural charitable hospital.
Title of the Practice
Extension of VIIT-TIFR collaboration model to Walawalkar Hospital, Dervan
- a rural charitable hospital
Goal
As mentioned in the SSR, the main goal of the practice was to collaborate with
TIFR for carrying out research and development through student projects at
VIIT. In the last few years the practice was extended to collaborate with other
institutes also. The institutes where such projects were extended are: Indian
Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru, Inter-University Consortium for
Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, Indian Institute of Science
Education and Research (IISER), Pune and Savitribai Phule Pune University,
Pune.
In the academic year 2016-17, the practice of collaborative R & D through
student projects was replicated not only for research institutes but also to a
hospital. Walawalkar Hospital, Dervan is a 500 bedded hospital with 6
Operation theatres started by Shri Vithalrao Joshi Charitable Trust in the rural
area with sole aim of reaching out to poor people who have very little access to
health care and where malnutrition is rampant. Most of the specialized medical
instruments are imported as there are very few medical industries in India. Due
to monopoly of multi-national companies, the prices of these instruments are
exorbitantly high. VIIT has started collaborating with Walawalkar Hospital
from 2016-17 for developing indigenous products which could be affordable.
Process for 2017-18 has been also initiated.
The growth, sustenance and diversification of collaborative student projects is
shown in Figure 1.

The Context
The extension of VIIT-TIFR activity to other institutes proves that such
collaboration is not unique to TIFR.
The Practice
The practice and implementation methodology is the same as described in the
SSR.
Evidence of Success
The students who underwent this activity have employability (Fig. 2).
Figure 2: Students employment
Problems Encountered and Resources Required
The process with TIFR is well set for the last 7 years. Efforts were made to
establish rapport with scientists/doctors from other research institutes and
Walawalkar hospital.
Notes (Optional)
As stated in the SSR, our efforts to extend this activity to other institutes/
hospital, indicates that this is a replicable model.
