Dear Friends of Tender Mercies,

Thirty years is a long time to work towards the same goal – much less to do it consistently well. Tender Mercies has accomplished just that because of you: Tender Mercies has provided a home to 2000 + men and women with nowhere else to turn since 1985, a home that fosters security, dignity, and community.

Like any well-oiled machine, we continually fine tune our engine. Over the past 6 years, we have renovated 2 of our largest facilities, updated our streetscape and worked with our neighbors to address safety concerns. We also created vocational and Living Skills Support services thanks to your past gifts.

In response to resident input and the number of residents who have experienced a return to homelessness, we are creating an Aftercare Program which will ensure that the skills learned while a resident of Tender Mercies continue to be used in community-based housing. This program will provide assistance with securing and maintaining housing, with the goal of increasing the number of residents who successfully live on their own long-term.

With your generosity, our staff, Board, and volunteers advance toward fulfilling our mission every day. Awareness about the need for our work continues to expand through media coverage, special events like the Taste of OTR attracting 15,000 attendees in its 3rd year, and established partnerships with agencies, businesses and groups.

As always, thank you for all that you do to help us transform lives at Tender Mercies.

Until all have a home,

Russell L. Winters Chief Executive Officer

About uSEstablished in 1985, Tender Mercies provides safe and respectable homes to homeless adults with mental illness.

rick’s Story of Lifelong Struggles to Lifelong hope at Tender mercies

From a middle class neighborhood with dreams, talents, and goals to homeless after years of feeling trapped in a world that doesn’t understand mental illness. It happens to thousands in Cincinnati every year regardless of age, income or race. Rick is just one of the 150 individuals saved by you last year.

Rick, 47 years old, struggled for most of his life without support from his parents who turned to alcohol due to their own depression. Learning disabilities were blamed for his inability to progress academically, socially and emotionally. Rick’s days were full of sadness and desperation.

Anxiety made supporting himself extremely difficult. Rick was unable to function in professional work environments with multiple responsibilities, which resulted in low wage jobs. But he had one passion — sculptures. After years of straining to make ends meet with a low self-esteem and declining mental health, in his 30’s Rick took a courageous step. To help develop and refine his natural talent for creating sculptures, he earned his art degree from NKU.

Without the appropriate treatment, his depression became too severe and he wasn’t able to live with friends or family anymore. Rick hit bottom and found

himself homeless with nowhere to go. He lived in his car for a year in parking lots of businesses in Hyde Park and Hebron. He took random jobs to survive and started to lose hope. All that mattered was eating and not freezing. He found a shelter when it became unbearable.

While thankful to have meals and a place to sleep, Rick needed a more stable place to recover, rebuild and thrive. A place called home. Rick found that place, Tender Mercies, a home for men and women with stories just like his. Stories of heartache, courage, and inspiration.

Over the past year, Rick has made a better life. Because of Tender Mercies support, Rick has had a job for 6 months at P&G as a security guard and gets proper medication and psychiatric care. Without a private secure space and a compassionate, supportive environment this wouldn’t have been possible. Rick is proud to have a steady job that allows him to focus on his artwork, a significant factor in his recovery. His artistic talent has allowed him to show his high-quality sculptures in galleries nationwide. He is doing so well that he plans to pursue a Master’s degree next year.

“Tender Mercies welcomed me and gave me a dignified place to live. They listen and truly care about me. Mental illness changes everything. So does Tender Mercies, I wouldn’t be living again without them. It is an amazing place and I am so very thankful.”“I love it here. I take pride in myself now and feel safe because I have

a clean, respectable home. Tender Mercies is a blessing.” – Donald

Transformations Dana’s Story of Determination

Imagine a childhood filled with abuse and being forced into prostitution at 13 years old. Dana, a mother and grandmother, knows what it’s like. This tragedy changed Dana, causing severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. To find the love she lacked, she had three kids by the age of 21. Overcome with grief and depression, Dana knew she had to change.

A strong and determined person, she got her GED in 2 months, took classes in Computer Information Systems and secured a steady job while raising her children on her own. After Dana’s job was outsourced and the recession hit, she was forced to choose minimum wage jobs. After a few years of scraping by, Dana was fortunate to land a contract position with P&G. Dana thrived for a few years, until her daughter got involved in illegal activity, draining

Dana’s resources. After being evicted, Dana had to resort to a shelter. A few months later, Dana found Tender Mercies.

One year later, Dana is thriving and working toward her dreams. “At Tender Mercies, I can focus on my therapy and not have to worry about where I will sleep or if I will have food.” Dana is a chef at heart. Tender Mercies has inspired her to enjoy cooking again through a partnership with Green Bean Delivery. “Because of the compassion and support of Tender Mercies, I learned how to run a business through a training program. I recently opened Jamerisol in Findlay Market which offers Jamaican-American Soul Food. I sell out every Saturday and am so proud to see my dream come true.” Dana got a second chance, thanks to donors and friends like you.

“There are many reasons the Scripps Howard Foundation is proud to support Tender Mercies. On my first visit, Russell and Jackie took me on a tour and struck up a conversation with nearly each resident we passed. Right away, it felt like I was in someone’s home; friends had even gathered together in one of the kitchens to catch up. I saw how they lived their tenets of dignity, safety and community.

Cincinnatians who need assistance with getting and paying for medicine for their mental illnesses, and who need a safe place to sleep and thrive, are fortunate they can rely on Tender Mercies.” – Lee, Scripps Howard Foundation

“A remarkable and seldom seen legacy of Tender Mercies has been its phenomenal growth after Father Chris Hall’s death. From one building to six! A tribute to the Hall family and so many devoted friends, one named Marcia Spaeth, who believed in taking care of a forgotten group.” – Dave

“People look at me and they have no idea I suffer from mental illness. Tender Mercies gave me a home. Because of their support, I am doing well. I volunteer and go on outings in the community. The volunteers bring wonderful food. I really appreciate everything. I love my home.” – Ingrid

“Tender Mercies understands homelessness and they have given me peace and security. The staff is always there to help, but I can be independent and make my own choices.” – Kevin

“As a military brat, I moved around a lot during my childhood so I know what it’s like to adjust and adapt to new living arrangements and communities.

I also know what it’s like to lose my sense of family as I knew it, and my “home” that I thought I had. Neither have been to the magnitude that the residents of Tender Mercies have experienced.

Volunteering at Tender Mercies allows me to help facilitate that sense of community, home and family that is truly IMPORTANT and a fundamental right for all human beings.

I consider it a privilege to work with everyone there. By doing so, I have a better sense and more loving awareness of the Cincinnati community in which I live.” – In service, Molly

“I think what keeps us coming to Tender Mercies and enjoying it so much is the fact that the residents are so very appreciative of anything we do! From cooking dinners to providing an opportunity for them to play bingo, the residents always make us feel so very welcome. It is indeed our pleasure to be involved with Tender Mercies!” – Mary Ann

As I near the end of my first year as President of the Board of Tender Mercies, I can absolutely say that I am proud to be part of such a meaningful organization that is making a difference in the lives of those we serve. We are an asset to our Cincinnati community. I am also proud of all our staff, especially starting with our Chief Executive Officer – Russell Winters, along with our vast numbers of volunteers and friends, without whom we could not do what we do. Our staff is committed and passionate about what they do and serving our residents. I also want to thank our Board of Trustees who actively participate in meetings, events and committees and who also provide the appropriate amount of support, governance and monitoring of our organization. The trustees are a great group of important community members that volunteer their time, talent and treasures to our organization – Thank you!

It was exciting to be present at the 30th Anniversary Gala and see all the people there to support Tender Mercies and to do so in such an impactful way. I enjoy coming to Tender Mercies and seeing our staff, volunteers and our residents – in action. We are a vibrant part of the OTR community and a beacon of light in so many ways.

Please keep Tender Mercies top of mind as you think about donating your own time, talent and treasures – we need our volunteers, friends and donors to accomplish our mission. Call us anytime for a tour or visit. We are happy and proud to be able to show you what we do and how we are fulfilling our mission every day. Thank you!

All my best,

Denise Montfort, President of the Board

“Volunteering at Tender Mercies has brought us closer together. The moment when we knew we were called to continue serving meals to the residents was one snowy Saturday. The residents were in disbelief that we still came and were so very appreciative. That day was incredibly rewarding to see the residents enjoying a meal together. Our lives are richer because of being a part of the Tender Mercies family. We are grateful that we are able to make a difference.” – SonRise Church
