Greetings St. Cecilia Community!

I cannot believe how fast the year has gone – it has been a busy year! All the work and programs happening at St. Cecilia Parish are a testament to our faith and community spirit. Last year’s report spoke of building on results and on being a growing, vibrant community:

Growth in our faith – what we believe

Growth in our outreach – how our faith calls us to serve

Growth in our spiritual life – what nourishes us as disciples

We continue to develop in all of these areas and the results are very evident. We have seen an increase in Baptisms and in the number of new families in our parish. Visitors often comment on the welcoming spirit at St. Cecilia. However, we have also faced some struggles over the anger and frustration regarding the Church’s lack of response to the abuse crisis. We need to continue our reflection and to seek answers so that we can move forward. On October 30th, we will have a prayer service, “Healing Our Church” to start a series of discussions on this issue. I will continue to encourage discussion and prayer about the abuse crisis.

The best-kept secret on Bainbridge Island is St. Cecilia Catholic School! We would love to see our school bursting at the seams with children. How do we go about this? We need to spread the word about our wonderful school! Many families with young children attend Mass on Sunday mornings, but only a few attend our school. How do we get more families to consider St. Cecilia Catholic School? The foundations of our faith begin when we are young and it starts with the family, but are made even stronger with a solid, faith-based education.

Finally, a big thank-you for the support you have shown me in my first year at St. Cecilia Parish, and for the financial support you provide to our parish. I am truly grateful for all of you. God is good – All the time!

Parish Financial Report

The Finance Committee is pleased to report solid financial results for the fiscal year ending June 30,

2019. Stewardship receipts increased by 8% in our vibrant, growing parish. Successful fundraisers,

special gifts, and a bequest allowed the parish to accomplish many repairs and make several im-

provements to our facilities. Further information concerning improvements is on page 10 of this

report. We trust that the improvements to and care of these facilities will glorify God and help to

bring more people to the beauty and holiness of the Mass, and to live in grace through Him.

Thank you for your generous support of the Mission of the Church.

Advent Giving Tree , one of our St. Vincent De Paul programs, provided gifts for 39 families, as well as for 6 residents of Manzanita House, and 16 participants at Stephens House last Christmas.

Nearly 2 tons of food donated to Helpline House - serving island families since 1968

Matt Talbot Center Christmas Dinner - in Seattle, the Center was established in 1985 as a free, licensed addiction treatment program serving those experiencing homelessness. St. Cecilia parishioners have enthusiastically supported the Center by preparing a holiday dinner and providing gifts for approximately 300 participants and their families each year.

Extreme Sobriety - a ministry of compassion and presence to the homeless and addicted on the streets of downtown Seattle and Kitsap County. Parishioner Steve Rhoades delivers parishioner-donated boots, rain gear, and blessing bags, throughout the inclimate months of the year along with his offer of compassion and help toward sobriety.

Super Suppers - in conjunction with the Bainbridge Island/North Kitsap Interfaith Council, free community dinners have been offered for over 20 years on the last seven days of each month. St. Cecilia hosts the home cooked meal on the last Wednesday of every month.

We Are… Striving for Excellence

Principal Kilbane and two of her dedicated teaching staff traveled to the University of Notre Dame this summer for a 3-day conference. It was an exciting opportunity to enhance and affirm the current

curriculum and culture of our school. A faith-based education is specifically designed to

EMBRACE, EDUCATE, & EMPOWER

our students. At SCCS we are intentional about how we do just that.

Students are EMBRACED in multiple ways throughout each day. Principal Kilbane and the teachers greet students each morning. Every week begins with a Whole School Prayer Circle. We develop students’ strengths and support them in their areas of growth. Students know that they are loved and that their growth in mind, body, and spirit is important to the entire school community.

Students are EDUCATED through an academically excellent curriculum. Singapore Math, Writers Workshop, FOSS Science, and Storypath for Social Studies incorpo-rate Common Core Standards. Field study on trails, in parks, and on beaches provides students hands on opportunities to learn about the environment. Arts integration across the curriculum provides opportunities for deeper learning. Creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration are developed in every subject.

Students are EMPOWERED to live their faith

through yearlong stewardship projects con-

necting students with parishioners, the elderly in

our community, and Helpline House. Caring for

the environment is part of our science curriculum

across all grade levels. Students learn that what

they do matters.

"We firmly believe that Catholic schools are one of the most powerful institutions for human formation and societal transformation."

Looking Back: 2019 Highlights We welcomed Fr. Mark as our new pastor and celebrated his first year at St. Cecilia Parish. Fr. Mark celebrated the 6th anniversary of his ordination in fine style with food and drink in the Faith Center Courtyard on a sunny evening after the Vigil Mass. We look forward to celebrating many years with Fr. Mark!

Our school successfully completed all Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) requirements to receive full accreditation for another six years. The visiting team concluded that at SCCS, “everyone is committed to developing students who have deep faith, a strong sense of service to others and a growth mindset.” The accreditation process involved two years of rigorous work and reflection by our amazing principal and staff. Well done!!

Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen, who led the Archdiocese of Seattle from 1975 to his retirement in 1991, died July 22, 2019 at the age of 96. He was known for his “common touch,” and he was much-loved by the northwest community he served.

The fall dinner and auction saw Conger Hall transformed into “Island Treasures” and the event was sold out with over 150 attendees. The evening was a great success with nearly $130,000.00 raised for our par-ish and school!

New devotional candles were added to the church and the steady glow of real candlelight is a source of comfort and joy to many in our worship space.

Improvements to the parish property included the removal of hazard-ous trees from the north end of the property, additional gravel in the parking lot, new grass for the school play yard, bollard lighting replace-ments to illuminate walkways, AEDs purchased in conjunction with the Rotary Club, and a security door installation in the parish office that stymies many, but keeps our parish staff safe and secure.

The 5 PM Christmas Eve Mass saw over 700 people in attendance! This is a problem we like to have! The average total weekly attendance for all three weekend Masses in 2019 was 611.

Conger Hall upgrades included new tables and chairs for much-improved seating, an automated coffee maker to keep our parishioners well-caffeinated, and the installation of new audio-visual equipment in the hall to accommodate overflow crowds at Christmas and Easter, and to enhance a wide variety of parish activities. In honor of World Marriage Day, our parish community was invited to celebrate marriage at a special Wine & Cheese event in February. Cupcakes were enjoyed by all!

The Lenten season included a spiritual retreat with Fr. Steve Malkiewicz and a return visit from Fr. Frank Desiderio. Cassie Nicholson led the CRS Prayer Walk, and numerous parishioners participated in Friday Lenten Dinners and Conversation that followed Stations of the Cross. The Easter Vigil Mass wel-comed seven members into the Catholic Church.

Vacation Bible Camp was back for a second year and was themed “Digging for Treasure.” This summer, 45 children attended camp and were led by Cassie’s crew of wonderful youth and adult volunteers. Saint Cecilia Catholic School continues to dominate the Kitsap County Law Day Essay Contest. Myla and Marlene placed 2nd and 3rd in 2019. Go Crusaders!

A Blessing of the Animals will be held Friday October 4 in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love of all creatures. Plan to bring your favorite fluffy, feathered, or scaly friend for a blessing.

Join the Saints Walk on All Saints Day, November 1 following the 9 AM Mass. Saint Cecilia middle school students will be sharing the culmination of their saint projects throughout the halls of the school. Enjoy an after-Mass snack and a coffee and stroll through the school to see if you can find your favorites!

Our Pastoral Assistant for Faith Formation, Cassie, was married in January – Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Nicholson! (and we look forward to meeting the littlest Nicholson in October!).

The Healing Our Church Prayer Service on October 30 will initiate an opportunity for St. Cecilia parish-ioners to pray for the victims of abuse, for those who feel marginalized, and for those who are struggling with their faith in the wake of the abuse crisis. 300 copies of Bishop Barron’s timely and thoughtful book, Letter to a Suffering Church will be distributed with a read-ing guide. Opportunities to form discussion groups will be available. Additionally, Bishop Barron’s accompanying video series will be distributed via FlockNote.

Don’t miss signups for Sacramental preparations! If you have a household member who wishes to receive the Sac-rament of First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, or Confirmation, please register online at the parish website or email [email protected].

Wednesday morning Mass has been moved to noon to accommodate a wider variety of schedules. See you at daily Mass! Join us for Mass on your lunch hour!

An exciting new monthly Adult Education Series will commence in January. Led by Cassie Nicholson, this stun-ning new St. Augustine video series brings a beautiful and systematic presentation of the Catholic faith.

Looking Ahead:

Who doesn't love pancakes with jolly St. Nick? Mark your calendars for December 7!

1 in 4 parishioners has been in

the parish less than 5 years

If you’re new ( or new-ish), don’t hesitate to reach out and join a ministry. It’s a great way to meet people.

Fr. Mark is also new-ish and look at all his new friends.

Good job, Fr. Mark!

St. Cecilia Parish FINANCIAL STATEMENT TERMINOLOGY

Some terminology may assist in understanding the financial statement. Receipts

Stewardship Receipts are comprised of the Sunday offertory and Holy Day collections, as well as the

rebate from the Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal.

Educational Receipts represents the tuition and registration fees for Saint Cecilia Catholic School

(S.C.C.S.) and amounts families pay for faith formation classes (P.R.E.P.) and other fees associated

with the religious education programs. This includes sacramental workshop and retreat fees.

This total also includes income from the Fulcrum Foundation and other private gifts specifically

granted for reducing tuition for parish families attending S.C.C.S.

Fundraising & Socials includes proceeds which come from events for the benefit of parish ministries:

parish auctions, One Call For All, Youthie Firewood sales, the annual S.C.C.S. Jog-a-thon, the An-

nual Italian Dinner, and more.

Donations, Bequests & Grants are special gifts to the parish received outside the Sunday Mass. This

includes monetary gifts to the parish, Mass intention donations, flower and candle donations,

and gifts for special liturgical events such as weddings and funerals.

Other School Operating Receipts come from several Saint Cecilia Catholic School activities: after-

school care fees, bus rider fees, uniform purchases, lunch and milk payments, athletic fees, and

afterschool enrichment fees.

An Endowment Fund Distribution is received annually from the Saint Cecilia Catholic School Patrons’

Endowment held and managed by the Fulcrum Foundation, the principal of which is held in per-

petuity. Donations to the Endowment may be made through the parish office.

Interest & Other Miscellaneous Income refers to interest earned on funds deposited at the Archdio-

cese for use in future projects, the proceeds of annual library book sales, and facility rentals.

Expenses

Salaries & Benefits account for 64% of total parish expense. Salaries are based on an Archdiocesan

scale. Benefits, mandated by the Archdiocese, include medical, dental, vision, life, disability, long-

term care, worker’s compensation coverage, payroll taxes, and pension contributions.

Facilities Operations & Maintenance expenditures cover the care of all parish property, including the

church, hall, Faith Center, school, lawn and grounds, and pastor’s residence. It includes repairs,

maintenance and cleaning supplies, homeowners association dues, state-required fire systems

testing and elevator monitoring, and more.

The Assessments, Insurance, Dues & Licenses expense include our support to the Archdiocese to

support the overall mission of the Church in Western Washington, property and liability insur-

ance, Kitsap County Stormwater Assessments, professional dues and licenses.

Page 14: Annual Report - saintcparish.org...$100,666 Annual Catholic Appeal (110 % of goal!) $45,678 Contributions to SCCS $23,112 The Haiti Fund $22,123 Contributions to St. Vincent The fall

The Utilities expense is very similar to what one may incur at a private home, but on a much larger

scale. Electricity, propane, water/sewer, trash disposal and recycling, and telephone/cable/

internet services for the church, the pastor’s residence in Sakai Village, the Faith Center, the Saint

Cecilia Catholic School, and Conger Hall were just over $75,000 in each of the last two fiscal

years.

Educational Program Supplies & Expense includes a multitude of items: Curriculum materials, sup-

plies and equipment for Saint Cecilia Catholic School (S.C.C.S.) and P.R.E.P. classrooms, Youth Min-

istry, Vacation Bible Camp, Spiritual Enrichment Event speakers (S.E.E.), retreats, workshops, pro-

fessional development for staff, parish library materials, afterschool enrichment events, food, test-

ing materials, and more.

Administrative Expense includes equipment (including PC’s), equipment leases, banking fees, post-

age, envelopes and other office supplies, professional and technical services, and advertising.

Fundraising Expense has three main components - auctioneers, catering/food/drink, and credit card

fees - and many small details. The three main components account for 65% of all fundraising ex-

pense. The small details are decorations, event supplies and rentals, software subscription, prizes

for students, childcare, and advertising.

Liturgical, Sacramental, & Music Supplies covers a large number of items necessary to enrich our

worship: Missalettes and hymnals, sheet music, instrument upkeep, tuning; and supplies such as:

candles, incense flowers, palms, altar wine and hosts, sacramental preparation supplies and

workshops (Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation), Sunday enve-

lopes, bulletin publication, the Lenten Mission speaker fees, and continuing education for the

pastor and religious educators.

The Hospitality & Appreciation expense is in large part Coffee & Donuts and Wine & Cheese costs.

Food, food serving supplies, and paper products are also provided for Super Suppers and other

parish events in Conger Hall and the Saint Monica Room. Additionally, a commercial coffee sys-

tem was installed in 2019.

Furnishings & Small Equipment costs for 2019 include several upgrades for parish life in Conger Hall:

New lightweight tables and padded banquet chairs. Candle stands were added in the church

sanctuary and a heat pump was installed at the pastor’s residence.

Transportation expenses are school bus fuel, maintenance, and insurance, as well as the pastor’s

mileage allowance and ferry expense, and reimbursements to staff for work-related travel ex-

pense.

Net Surplus is income in excess of expenses. A cash outlay not included in the above listing was for

the audiovisual system in Conger Hall. The AV system was placed on the balance sheet as a fixed as-

set. A portion of the 2019 surplus has been added to the parish savings account at the Archdiocese.

Another portion was placed in cash reserve for the Insurance and Assessments bills received each

July requiring cash outlay of approximately $60,000.
