The following summary of reported rescues by members orS urf Life-Saving Clubs throughout the Dominion-though notcovering a ll the Cl ub s operating under th e Associatio n-gives a m pleev iden ce of the g rea t va lue to the community in the services ren­dered by Surf Lif e-Saving Club members, and viv id ly brings beforethe public wh at a n appa ll ing number of drowning cases therewould be in th e Dominion in the course of a year if the servicesof our Clubs wer e for any reason to cease to function. T h e numberof actual drowning cases is st ill very h igh , bu t wou ld be muchh igher bu t for the efficient patr ollin g of ou r beaches and the readywillingness of Club members to go out-under very trying condi ­tions at times-to the assistance of those in distress . The Cl ubsren d er wonderful service to the community, and the co m m u nitycould, through its Local Bodies , help the Clubs in many ways toen su re a co n t in ua n ce of their efficient work on our beaches.

The fo regoing summary of rescues in the past vividly portray.th e va lue of the S urf Life-S a vin g movement to this Dominion.It is with feel ings of pride and justification that the Associationrecords the fo regoing set of fig ures in making its appeal for adefinite recogni tion by the general public and Lo cal Authoritiesin the activities of its Clubs, and in th e hope that some tangiblerecognition will be given to ensure the continuance of su ch servicesunder the most efficient conditions as regards to necessary equip­ment for all Clubs.

A WORTHY ACHIEVEMENT.

As far as the Association is a ware, on no occasion when theservices of members of S u r f Life-Saving Clubs have been calledupon has a life been lost.

THE G OVERN M ENT'S RECOGNITION OF S ER V ICES.

The Hon. Minister of I n terna l Affairs (Hon. W . E. Parry,M .P.), in addressing th e Ann u a l G enera l Meeting of the Associationon O cto ber 24th, 1936, mad e special reference to the work beingdone by th e Sur f Life-Saving Clubs of th e Dominion, an d expressedthe appreciation of the Govern ment for such services. In handingto the President of th e As sociation a cheque for £200 the Govern­ment, through the Hon. Mi ni ste r , as a g ra n t f rom the Art Unions,sig n ified in a very d efin it e manner its approval of the operationsof th e Surf Li fe-Saving mo vem ent a s co n d uc ted by th e Associa tion .The C ounc il places on record it s sincere a p p reciatio n of th erecogni tio n of th e ser vic es that the A ssocia tion is endeavouring tore nder to th e co mmu ni ty, a n d trusts th at th is form of recogni t ionwill be co nt in ue d and will be fo llowed by a just reco gnition inthis or so me ot her form by Local A u thori ties and th e general p ublic.

reached by memb ers of the A.S.L.S.A ., a n d in the wat er ' even tsthe standard reached was very high indeed . The team showed tocerfection in the surf events, and had little diffi culty in demon­;trating its sup er iority in the surf races. Though gi ving of itsbest at all ti me s, th e team. soon gave in d ications on the com men ce­ment of the tou r th at it was not o ut fo r th e securing o f prizes orhonours, bu t mainly for the purpose of crea ting further interestin the a cti vit ies of the or ganisati on to whi ch they bel onged and it skindred organisation, the N .Z.S.L.S.A. The tour , educationally,was all that could be d esired, and the sportsmanship a n d generaldeportment of th e team a n d party th roughout the tour h a s left anindelible memory in th e m inds of those whose good fortu ne it wasto h a ve met and been as sociated with our visi ting memb ers fr omacross th e Tasman . The Manager, Captai n , a n d a ll members ofthe team a nd part y were willi n g and anxious to be of the g re a testassistance to th e D ominion As soc ia tion a n d the va ri ous Clubs, andwe record with th e hi ghest apprec iation ou r sincer est thanks forthe ac tio n of th e A .S. L.S .A . in sen d in g the team over and fo r th egreat h elpfulness of the tea m . N .Z. NATIONAL SURF LIFE-SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The N ational Surf Life-Savi ng Championships wer e conductedat Lyall Bay Beach, Wellington, on Saturday and Sunday, Februaryl Jth and 14th. The a rra n gements for th e conduct of th e Cham­pionships wer e in th e hands of the \'V'elli ngton District Surf Life­Saving Association , and the Association is to be congratulated onthe great amount of d etailed work and organisation it had doneto ensure the success of the carnival. The accommodation arrange­ments were id eal , and the gea r supplied for th e use of Clubs andofficials reached a very high standard indeed. Considerable pub licinterest was a roused , and with the additional attraction of thepresence of th e vi siting Surf Life-S aving team from Australiarecord attendances wer c fo reca st ; but fo rces, o the r than clubenthusiasts, took a h and. a n d th e wea ther condi tions were o f th eworst, and, in de ed , co uld hardly be worse for suc h events as aNational Surf Championships M eeting. Despite th e inclementweather conditions th e a ttendances on both . days were very grari­fying. The Championships were d eclared officially opened byThe H on . M in ist er of Educat ion a n d Health ( H on. P . Fraser,M .P. ) , and th e declaration of the A thletes' Oath by Mr. F. Mollier,Lyall Ba y Club, \1(felling to n . Mayer and Kean, of Welli ngton , N .Z.) will , we feelsure, be h ighly t rea su red by the A ustra lian As sociation a n d themember s of the visiting team.

The object ive of entrants to membership in Surf Life-Savingis, or sh ou ld be, th e securing of the qualifying emblem of a trainedSurf Life-Saver-th e Surf Life-Saving Medallion-and thoughprevious reports of the Association have only made passing refer­ences to the number of th ese distinguished awards gai ned by theClubs dur in g the previous year, the fo llow ing su mma ry of theawards gained by Club m embers of the va r io us District Associationsand individua l Clubs is well worthy of recordin g, a nd g ives indi­cation of the increa sing efficiency of the young members of theClubs, and a defini te g ua ra ntee to the bathers a n d visitors to thebeaches o f the increa sing number o f those fully conversant withthe knowled ge required to be of material assistance in the caseof distress in the water. The test is severe, and the holders of thiscoveted honour of the Surf Life-Saving movement fe~I .confidenr .at all times to be in readiness to render the necessary 'assista n ce. " .
