2004 was a special year for St. Luke’s Community House. The completion of our new facility and the opening of our Infant and Toddler Childcare program was a highlight. Subsequently, the increased number of collaborating partners and the programs and services they bring to this neighborhood are stories to tell with pride. Yet none of this would have happened without many dedicated supporters. Among many others, these are some of the special people we would like to thank.

PR Task Force: Emily Zerfoss, Holly Winn, Angela Moretti Goddard, John Brunner, Beth Seigenthaler Courtney, and Christi WilliamsOver the past three years, this energetic and creative group has pooled their talents and resources to increase the awareness level about St. Luke’s in the greater Nashville area. The Red Door Campaign, St. Luke’s Bread Sales, and wide exposure in the print media have all been successful parts of this effort. Thanks to this group, St. Luke’s is no longer such a well kept secret!

Betsy Wills has chaired the Board Development Task Force for the past two years and taken the task to heart. Much emphasis has been put into strengthening St. Luke’s Board of Directors, not only in terms of diversity, but also in terms of talents and interests. Her efforts have resulted in a strong, responsive and dedicated Board that supports St. Luke’s as it works diligently to serve the low-income families in west Nashville.

As president of the This ‘N That Thrift Shop, Ramsey Doran has brought energy and vision to this vital organization that depends totally on the generous and dedicated volunteers who operate the shop each day. The efforts of Ramsey and her staff have resulted in a nearly 10% increase in revenue in 2004. Plans for the future include expanding the sales floor, creating a traveling fashion show, and increasing awareness of this great shop as a place to find great bargains. All proceeds from This ‘N That Thrift Shop support the St. Luke’s Childcare Programs.

David Miller is an employee at the Nashville Glass Plant and a champion of St. Luke’s Community House. Over the past six years, David has organized the plant’s efforts to provide new shoes for each preschool child in the fall and to provide a special toy for them at Christmas. In addition, David and his co-workers have also supported the preschool program with gate collections, visits to the classrooms, and by participating in Read-to-Me Week. David is continuing our history of neighbors helping neighbors.

ST. LUKE’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN: In 2001, St. Luke's Community House started a capital campaign to raise $3.5 million to repair and expand our facilities. What a success the campaign has been so far! The brand new St. Luke's building is handsome as well as functional. The original "Red Door," restored and repainted, continues to welcome needy people as it has for 92 years! Well, the door is just a sign of welcome - in reality, St. Luke's volunteers and donors are the ones who invite the poor into their Community House. The expertly designed building has improved life at St. Luke's. Everyone remarks on the transformation and the uplifted spirits. Here, children are schooled and protected while hot meals are cooked and packaged for delivery to the hungry. As of January 2005, the Capital Campaign needs $650,000 to meet its goal. You still have time to add your name to the list of contributors.

Titans Community Quarterback AwardScott Sherrill, Statewide, FinalistScott is one of our youngest Mobile Meals Driver, but he has been doing it almost the longest!Scott began driving mobile meals with his father, Parker, when he was 12 years old. Now a successful entrepreneur he continues to visit our seniors and deliver much more than their hot meals!

This 'n That Thrift Store Volunteers Group Volunteers WINNERS!Over 100 remarkable men and women volunteer their time to run the This 'N That Thrift Store. For 32 years, Thrift Store volunteers haves been collecting, sorting, organizing, and selling used goods that in turn help support the programs at St. Luke's (Last year their donation came in around $100,000!)

Elinor McLaughlin Volunteer Innovator FinalistHelping with homework after school wasn't enough. In 2001 Elinor created and implemented a summertime Reading Buddies Programs. She trains and matches teams of volunteers to school-age children enrolled at St. Luke's. The goal is to improve their reading skills over their summer break, but have a great time doing it! This year's theme was the Summer Olympics - each "team" was a country and their number of books read earned them gold medals!

Leslie McGinn Direct Service CategoryLeslie drives mobile meals weekly, attends and helps organize all of our Community-wide Events, organizes endless "drives" for anything we might need, helps register families for our holiday programs, slings a mean hammer with the West Nashville Partnership, and will do just about anything else we may need! With three teenaged boys, we are in awe of her and her amazing capacity to be involved in so MANY different ways!

Paul Hendrick Youth AwardPaul started volunteering at St. Luke's when he was 14 years old. Now 17, he still comes each summer and volunteers five hours a day, five days a week with our TWO-year olds! Paul is an exceptionally committed, dependable young volunteer who has helped our teachers and children in more ways than can be described. He is graduating this year from MBA and may be pursuing a degree in early education!

Marian Ott Community AwardMarian really gets around! Not only is she tutoring three ELL students and helping our neighbors file their taxes, Marian reads to the kids in our classrooms and helps with our holiday programs. When she is not volunteering at St. Luke's, she is presiding over the MTA Board or sharing her leadership skills to one of the many other committees and boards she serves.
