Parish Mission Statement Our mission is to be a caring, inclusive community, centered in the Eucharist and grounded in the Gospel, so that we can reach out as Christ’s hands to the world.

Affirming Principles

We are a caring, inclusive community St. Matthew was an outcast in his time. We honor St. Matthew by welcoming the outcasts of our time.

We believe in the value of every person, regardless of physical, economic or social condition, and strive to be a community which serves the unique spiritual needs of all God’s children.

We respect and honor others who worship one God.

We acknowledge that God created all things and, as God’s stewards, we strive to care for all creation.

Centered in the Eucharist

The Eucharist, at the very core of our community, reveals the truth that we are one in Christ, and strengthens and renews us for service.

All persons are welcome to worship with us, to share the Eucharist at God’s table, and to assist our efforts in the greater community to proclaim God’s word.

Grounded in the Gospel

Jesus preached a message of compassion, inclusion and love. So do we.

We are a community of compassion. Our bonds are based on God’s overwhelming love, rather than narrow definitions of doctrine and behavior.

We accept people at all points in their spiritual journeys, and support each other as we question and grow in faith.

So that we can reach out as Christ’s hands to the world

We care about and care for each other, whomever that “other” person may be, both within and beyond our community of faith.

We believe that there are unique needs of God’s people at every stage of their journeys, and we seek to provide programs and support to serve spiritual needs throughout life.

We reach out to address the world’s physical and spiritual needs, rather than waiting for the world to come to us.

Stewards of St. Matthew’s

The Planned Giving Committee has been quietly at work since 2010. This year, their efforts reached an important benchmark with the creation of a legacy society, Stewards of St. Matthew’s. Individuals are part of the Stewards of St. Matthew’s when they share with the rector or a member of the planned giving committee that they have made a gift in their will/ trust; make a charitable gift annuity; make a gift of appreciated securities; make a gift of life insurance or a gift from tax-deferred retirement plans; or other planned gifts. The following individuals are recognized as charter members: Ken and Denee Bannister Neville Blakemore Kathy Bowling Ellie Britt David and Jackie Brooks Steve and Mary Jane Cherry Lee and Jody Fletcher Mary Louise Gorman Gaylee Gillim and Ed Hart Judy Heuglin Mary Johnson Brian and Kelly Kirby Tom Kolb and Cathy Sutton Greg and Joan Kuhns Edie Nixon Aidan and Bobbie Stone Mary Nancy Todd Kevin and Linda Wardell George and Pat Wheeler Anonymous (7)

USHERS FOR 5PM SERVICE If you are interested in serving as a Eucharistic usher or greeter for our 5pm services, please contact Greg Kuhns (502-893-3383). Greg will provide prospective ushers with guidelines and responsibilities as well as add new ushers to the schedule. ACOLYTES Acolytes are persons assisting the celebrant in a religious service or procession. At St. Matthew's, youth in grades 6-12 serve as acolytes at the 10:00 service (1 adult at the 8:00 a.m. service). Any interested youth can contact Lynn Miller to be trained and added to the rotating schedule. ALTAR GUILD Altar Guild is a loyal group that gives thoughtful care and attention in support of our clergy and the liturgical life of our parish. Members care for the altar, vessels, linens and prepare for Sunday Eucharist and baptisms as well as weekly services, wedding and funerals. Please contact Lynn Reese (228-0004) or Ann Hines (894-0225) if you are interested in getting involved. FINANCE VOLUNTEERS The finance volunteers assist with money counting. The chair of this ministry, Don Kissling, would like to thank the following for their participation: Ken Bannister, Sam Bridge, David Brooks, Jack Carter, Anne Hampton, Ed Pelton, John Thomas and Bill Weinberg and our church accountant, Joanne Coleman. Retiring from this ministry with much thanks is Will Irving and Bill McKinny. If you are interested in serving, please contact Don Kissling (426-2361). PLANNED GIVING Planned Giving is a ministry that is part of the Stewardship committee. It presents opportunities to inform and educate the parish on how to make a gift to St. Matthew’s Church during one’s lifetime, by using estate and tax planning techniques. Committee members are Gaylee Gillim (chair), Neville Blakemore, Ruthe Holmberg, and Cathy Sutton. Please contact the rector, or any committee member, to get information. THE ENDOWMENT FUND The Endowment is a fund which receives large gifts or bequests from donors. The Fund is divided into 5 sub-funds, General Use, Assets, Memorials and Aesthetics, Parish Programs, Outreach and Dimensions of Faith. The money in each of these sub-funds is distributed for the intended purpose such as Outreach and Dimensions of Faith or for Capital Needs (roof repair, HVAC replacement, etc) or seed money to try a new program or ministry within the parish. Edie Nixon is the Treasurer of the Endowment Fund. The Endowment is part of the Finance committee. Please contact either David Brooks or Edie Nixon if you are interested in joining the Finance Committee.

All youth in 6th-12th grade are welcome and should contact Lynn Miller or any staff member to begin participating. BRIDGE The bridge ministry is an instructed service for children from grades 2 to 5. The service strives to introduce our children to the structure and meaning of the Episcopal church service. The children actively participate as acolytes, readers, and ushers for the service. EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY "Education for Ministry” (EfM) is designed for lay persons who desire to grow in appreciation of their personal ministry. We meet one evening a week during the academic year and these seminars are limited to twelve persons so that each person can fully participate. Currently, I am the contact person and you may reach out directly to me. The Rev. Moray Peoples, cell 502-836-1278. Also, a bird’s eye view of EfM is accessible online: efm.sewanee.edu This website is terrific! ST. MATTHEW’S EPISCOPAL LIBRARY The library with its organized collection of materials provides an accessible and inviting space for study and research for individuals and groups. It circulates books and other media to parishioners of all ages. The library committee is led by librarians Lee Fletcher, Kathy Bowling and Tyler Goldberg. Many parishioners assist with the library’s operation. Newcomers to St. Matthew’s are welcomed to the library as both patrons and prospective volunteers. Volunteers are needed to assist parishioners and to check out items after each Sunday morning service. CLINGMAN FORUM The Forum develops and schedules educational presentations for parishioners in Clingman Chapel after the 10 a.m. Eucharist. The typical time schedule would be from 11:20 a.m. to Noon. We try to develop a variety of programs that will be useful and interesting in strengthening knowledge and faith. A small committee works to plan the programs. We are in the process of expanding the committee and welcome new members. We are also open to new program ideas from parishioners. Kit Kincade is currently the committee chair. (502) 426-1641. [email protected]. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL St. Matthews joins with other Louisville area Episcopal churches to put on a week of Vacation Bible School every summer for children age 4 to 5th grade. We rely on enthusiastic volunteers (from 6th grade to adults) to offer this week of learning about God in our lives and relationship-building with our friends from other churches. If you would like to be involved, contact Sarah Dewberry at [email protected]. WOMEN IN CONVERSATION Women in Conversation is a book-based weekly discussion group, meeting from 9:30-11:00 on Thursday mornings. The wide variety of books read are suggested by and agreed upon by group members. All are welcome and can join by arriving on Thursday morning or by contacting Lynn Miller. PASTORAL CARE The ministries of pastoral care seek to support persons at each stage of their life and faith. From delivering flowers to parishioners experiencing grief and loss to hospital visitation, St. Matthew's seeks to involve clergy and lay ministers in the ministry of healing and wholeness. If you are new to St. Matthew's there are several ways to become involved in ministries of care: please speak with the Rev. Emily Crouch if interested.

CARE TEAM MINISTRY The new Care Team ministry launched January 15, 2014 as a volunteer team of 30 parishioners. During the first year we made 673 connections with our parish family through cards, emails, visits, phone calls and meal deliveries. Working under the direction of our clergy, the Care Teams have offered support, to parish members in need, and enabled our clergy to focus on areas of ministry beyond the Care Teams mission. Care Teams are in place to continue nurturing our parish family in 2015. If you are interested in joining our ministry, contact Sarah Johansen, Care Team Coordinator at 499-0249. FLOWER DELIVERY Flowers from the altar are arranged and delivered on Mondays to those the staff identify. Susan Judge keeps the schedule of the deliverers while Elizabeth Ragsdale and Sanna Viitamaa arrange the flowers. If you wish to join the list of those who deliver, please contact Susan Judge, [email protected]. If you wish to help arrange the flowers on Monday mornings, please contact Elizabeth Ragsdale, [email protected], or Sanna Viitamaa, [email protected]. HOMEBOUND MINISTRY For over 20 years the Homebound Committee has been providing a regular caring ministry with homebound parishioners. Each committee member usually calls on the same parishioners over the years and establishes enduring and special relationships. Committee membership is determined by the number of parishioners being served. You may speak with Joe Paul Pruett for additional information. NEWCOMER MINISTRY From baking and sending bread to visitors, to regular newcomer classes, this ministry seeks to be a face of hospitality for those who are new or visiting our church. If you are interested in joining the newcomer ministry please contact the Rev. Emily Crouch about ways to connect and become involved. CHURCH GARDEN We maintain a garden on the church grounds. During the growing season, we run a “farmer’s market” in the narthex after church services featuring produce and flowers from our garden (and from the gardens of parishioners). All money from the farmer’s market goes to the Food Pantry. Interested volunteers should contact Franklin Jelsma, Caroline Deutsch or Nicholas Eastman. LOUISVILLE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY St. Matthew’s assists the Metro Louisville Habitat for Humanity build homes in our community for those in need the first Saturday of every month. HEARTS FOR KENYA We work in Oyugis Kenya. Our projects include a farming co-op with 150 farmers, teaching farming in 20 schools and helping to provide the 8,000 students with a daily meal, and running a medical clinic. I am president: John Willingham Give me a call or email for ways to help. CORNERSTONE Cornerstone is a program of the Home of the Innocents that provides weekly peer support and life skills education for young adults who have grown up in out of home placement, foster care, are homeless or are fleeing domestic violence. Volunteers from St. Matthew's assist the first Tuesday of each month during the “school year” by providing child care while parents meet and by providing the meal for that evening. The food items for the meal are donated by volunteers who sign up and the meal is prepared by volunteers the Monday before the meeting. Child care volunteers may contact Diane Clark at 245-5633. Cooks and food contributors may sign up on the bulletin board. REFUGEE MINISTRY Refugee Ministry is done through Kentucky Refugee Ministries. We collect gently used household items and furniture year around to help furnish refugee apartments. Periodically St. Matthew's co-sponsors a refugee family by supporting the family with friendship, some transportation, adapting to the American way of life,by providing all furnishings for an apartment as well as providing rent and utility expense for three to four months depending on when the refugees gain employment. Those interested in volunteering may sign up on the bulletin board when that is offered or by contacting Sharon Nesmith at 228-5918 ([email protected]). Household contributions may be placed in the collection bin in the Narthex coat closet. Large furniture or large quantity donors should contact Sharon Nesmith. HEALING PLACE The Healing Place is an addiction recovery facility in Louisville that treats men, and women. St. Matthew's members contribute new toiletry items (especially travel size) and used bed and bath linens. Contributions may be placed in the bin in the Narthex coat closet. Questions may be directed to Sharon Nesmith at 228-5918. ([email protected]). KITCHEN COMMITTEE The kitchen committee inspects, cleans and re-establishes order in the Saints Hall kitchen and the serving bar area of Saints Hall each week and the Staff kitchen each month. Periodically, all drawers, shelves and cabinets are cleaned and organized. The committee also maintains supplies for the coffee ministry as well as the kitchen. For questions or to volunteer, contact Sharon Nesmith at 228-5918. ([email protected]).
