Annual Report 2008/09 Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center
All in all, 2008 - 2009 was a positive year for the BOEC. With the economic downturn, we expected (and received) a challenge. Several areas came in slightly off budget. However, we are pleased to report that we delivered outstanding, safe programs, served many students and finished the year in the black.
Our success is due to several factors.• The Adaptive Ski and Wilderness Programs
met budgeted revenue and expense goals—a testament to our students who returned despite hard economic times to pursue something central to their lives.
• We retained the vast majority of our traditional group clients, despite many agencies and schools experiencing budget cuts.
• Several new clients came on board.• Several major foundations maintained or
increased giving levels.• Individual giving remained strong.• The BOEC’s marquee events, Cinco de
Mayo and Breckebeiner, brought in more revenue than expected. Fundraising events in Keystone and Denver also brought us new support.
• The BOEC implemented a mid-year contingency plan to cut expenses in several categories.
Several other positive factors are worth noting.• After a stringent review of staffing,
procedures and operations, the BOEC
successfully completed our re-accreditation review with the Association for Experiential Education (AEE).
• The BOEC had no major safety incidents this fiscal year. We review and update our safety procedures on an ongoing basis and receive oversight from the Board Safety Committee.
• There was no turnover of key BOEC staff positions. Our Adaptive Ski Program and Wilderness Program Directors have been with us for 12 and 15 years, respectively, and support staff has remained in place for several years now.
The Board of Directors has also retained a core of talented members for several years now, with Chairman Aris Sophocles continuing for a third year. We welcomed two new trustees—Michelle Gempeler from FirstBank of Summit County and Rich Kendall of Eide Bailly in Denver.
Our deepest thanks go out to all of you who participated in the world of the BOEC this year—students, agencies, staff, volunteers and donors. The future of the BOEC is indeed bright only with your continued dedication and spirit.
Looking forward,
Bruce Fitch Dr. Aris SophoclesExecutive Director Chairman of the Board
The mission of the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center is to expand the potential of people with disabilities and special needs through meaningful, educational and inspiring outdoor experiences.

ProgramsIt was a full and busy year programmatically—over 2,000 individuals participated in more than 9,200 days of BOEC programming! The Adaptive Ski Program, Wilderness Program and Intern Program were close to capacity as we provided safe, quality courses to a wide variety of students with disabilities and special needs. Some specific highlights for the year:
• Brain Injury Association of Colorado-This long-time client that serves adults with brain injuries did six multi-day courses with the BOEC this year, including a new winter program. This continues to be one of our most rewarding partnerships and we work hard to provide them with a progressive curriculum and challenging activities.
• Military events-Four special programs focused on serving injured veterans of the recent military conflicts. The BOEC hosted Disabled Sports USA’s Ski Spectacular in Breckenridge for the 19th year. The 2nd annual Adaptive Ski and Ride Camp at Snofest, held at Keystone in January, taught 17 disabled veterans to ski and snowboard. The 2nd annual Soldier Spring Ski Week in April brought 10 wounded vets and their families to participate in a week of adaptive skiing and fly-fishing. September’s Military Mountain Retreat gave brain injured soldiers a chance to enjoy the outdoors and share their experiences.
• Visually Impaired Program-The BOEC completed year three of a multiple year grant from the Alcon Foundation. The first “Out of Sight” Program in August brought eight visually impaired teens to the BOEC for an 8-day Wilderness course.
In addition to long time partners such as American Cancer Society, The Children’s Hospital and Presbyterian School of Houston, there were a number of new clients, including:
• Rocky Mountain Independence for the Physically Challenged-These are teenagers with spina bifida and cerebral palsy. Ten participants, most of them in wheelchairs, came for four days of outdoor activities,
including rafting Brown’s Canyon and the Upper Colorado. The group’s goals were to challenge themselves, acknowledge and acquire the ability to lead independent and fulfilling lives and gain self-confidence. The course was such a success that they plan to come in the winter for adaptive skiing.
• Rocky Mountain Getaway-This was a new open enrollment course. Seven adults and their families did a day of handcycling on Summit County’s bike paths and a day of rafting on the Upper Colorado. The participants were all wheelchair users.
• Halcyon Middle School Day Treatment-This group from Boulder serves youth with mental health issues. They did a four day course which included rafting and other activities based at the BOEC’s Scott Griffith Lodge.
• Adaptive Fly-Fishing Camp-This program brought seven participants to the joys of fly fishing. It included a day of fishing at a private ranch on the Lower Blue River and lodging at the Scott Griffith Lodge.
VolunteersNearly 350 hard-core, hands-on volunteers supported BOEC programs in 2009. They worked primarily in the Adaptive Ski Program, but also helped with special events and Wilderness courses. The volunteer corps is absolutely central to the success of the BOEC, not only in bringing caring and skilled mentors to our programs but also in connecting our courses to the community. Many thanks to all who donated their time and energy to the BOEC this year!
Fundraising SupportOur partners, including foundation, individual, corporation and government agencies contributed $597,000. Though down 6% from last year, we anticipated this shift and exceeded our budgeted goals. For the scholarship fund, we added $173,000 and awarded $157,000. A total of 821 low-income individuals with special needs were provided tuition assistance to attend programs in our Adaptive Ski and Wilderness Programs. Fundraising was also critical in enabling the BOEC to maintain the high quality of our staff, interns, facilities and equipment.
The Year in Highlights
“Many of the lessons learned
at the BOEC give them the
courage to face the uphill
battle of attending and
graduating from a good high
school and college, getting a
good job and ultimately
becoming upstanding mem-
bers of the community.”
— Gemma and Kate
Special Events
The BOEC was once again honored to be the beneficiary of two outstanding community events. The 26th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration raised more than $18,000 for the BOEC’s Willie Whalen Memorial Fund. The staff of Mi Casa Restaurant and Cantina in Breckenridge hosted and sponsored the event. They did an amazing job providing outstanding gourmet food, service and enthusiasm.
The 7th annual Breckebeiner 60k Nordic Ski-a-Thon was hosted by the Breckenridge Nordic Center and proprietors Gene and Therese Dayton. The die-hard participants, together with event sponsors, contributed over $26,000
for the BOEC’s Scholarship Fund, a new record!
The E.P.I.C. Foundation raised $20,000 for youth at risk programs with their 80’s-themed ski party in Denver in October. The fundraiser was held in memory of Adam Barron, the son of E.P.I.C. Foundation founders Steve and Charlene Barron.
A fundraiser for the Keystone Adaptive Center (KAC) in December brought in over $11,000 for this satellite program of the BOEC. The KAC has developed a solid group of committed supporters and volunteers from the Keystone community.
