Our 25th Birthday is a milestone which inspires thoughtful reflection upon the tens of thousands of at-risk students whose futures were transformed through education with CISDR’s individualized academic and support services.

A special note of appreciation to Alon USA, sponsor of our year-long birthday celebration, filled with exciting events, increased media exposure and student successes and to Barbara Hunt Crow, loyal advocate and our 25th Birthday Honorary Chair.

To all of you who have given your time, talent and funds to support CISDR and our 24,250 at risk school children who learned to dream and to achieve through education over the past 25 years:

THANK YOU!

To all loyal and new donors who will support CISDR in 20, making it possible for us to reach thousands more struggling school children, encouraging them to achieve their dreams through education:

THANK YOU!

Message from the President & CEO and Board ChairCommunities In Schools Dallas Region (CISDR) is celebrating a quarter century of helping students at risk of failure and dropping out of school to succeed academically and achieve their dreams. Over the course of 25 years, our professional staff has provided campus-based academic support to more than 24,250 capable, but underachieving schoolchildren with consistently astounding results!

In overcoming tremendous odds, these children succeed academically and build their dreams because CISDR works in partnership with principals, teachers, school staff and volunteers to create a community of support for each student, every day, right on the school campus.

CISDR has come a long way in the last 25 years. South-western Bell, IBM and Rockwell International allied to establish Communities In Schools Dallas in July 985, with three schools in Dallas ISD and on-loan executive directors. For the first four years, CIS Dallas served just 350 students.

Now, in 2009-0, CISDR is in six counties, ten school districts, 75 schools and has provided direct one-on-one comprehensive services and support to 2,250 students at risk of dropping out – with these verified results:

Thank You, Alon USAOur 25th Birthday Presenting Sponsor

Dream Achievers II

Alon USA, under the direction of Jeff Morris, has been a staunch supporter and an integral part of Communities In Schools Dallas Region (CISDR) since 1996. The CISDR Endowment was estab-lished in September 2003 with an initial gift of one million dollars pledged by Alon USA for the specific purpose of providing financial support and long-term stability to CISDR. Alon USA stepped up again this year as CISDR’s 25th Birth-day Presenting Sponsor.

With Alon USA’s support, a year-long succession of celebratory events and media exposure was planned to leverage the inherent value of CISDR’s milestone 25th birthday, creating brand recogni-tion with new constituents and enhancing awareness with existing friends and supporters. This further strengthened our shared passion for providing the academic and supportive systems needed to overcome barriers faced by the bright, but underachieving schoolchildren of the Dallas region. Here are a few photos from some of these events.

ExxonMobil Green TeamFor the second year, CISDR welcomed the assistance of summer interns from the ExxonMobil Green Team. Three high school students spent eight weeks assisting the organization in “being green” — from monitoring electrical usage to encouraging recycling. These three young adults assisted middle school stu-dents in gaining a better understanding of “green” curriculum, which they in turn took home and implemented. The Green Team spent their last week preparing a presentation to over 100 CISDR staff on what they learned and why protecting the environment is so important. Once again, these students brought an energy and perspective that was a welcomed attribute to the summer office life!

Bright Kids Literacy Program CISDR’s Bright Kids project continues to work with students from grade K-3 to help improve grade level reading proficiency. Once or twice a week, volunteers and campus staff work in small groups, identifying student weaknesses and tailoring the pro-gram to meet the specific needs of that reader. Teachers on many campuses welcome the CISDR project, which helps prepare these early readers for future success.

MetLife Being Green Summer AdventureThe MetLife Being Green Summer Adventure included 45 students from three CISDR campuses. The “green” curriculum began during the spring semester and continued into the sum-mer with field trips and a chance to explore putting theory into practice. The summer culminated in a trip to Moody Gardens in Galveston to study plant life and its impact on the environment.

CISDR Mobile TeamThe CISDR Mobile Team is comprised of staff members special-ized in dealing with high-risk behaviors. The 2009-10 school year saw 397 small group services provided to over 60 campus sites. Social/communication skills, self esteem, bullying and drug/alco-hol prevention, and anger management were the top five request-ed group services requested.

ExxonMobil GEMSThe ExxonMobil Girls Exploring Math and Science program (GEMS) was on five Irving ISD campuses this year, with a total of 125 young ladies benefiting from this math and science expe-riential learning program. This year’s GEMS program included students attending “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at ExxonMobil headquarters in Las Colinas, where Astronaut Sally Ride facilitated a series of science experiments. GEMS students also went to Southern Methodist University to participate in the first annual TEDxKIDS conference (Technology Entertainment Design) – part of a national drive to encourage children to “think outside the box”. This year, 95% of GEMS students said that they felt GEMS had helped improve their overall TAKS scores, demonstrating that special initiatives like GEMS impact students more then we could possibly hope for.

AmeriCorpsIn 2009-10, CISDR incorporated the AmeriCorps program into its campus services. Enlisting the help of 25 full- and part-time AmeriCorps members, CISDR was able to expand the support-ive interventions provided on 15 campuses in 6 school districts. These 25 AmeriCorps members were not only trained on CISDR case management basics, but also community engagement and volunteer recruitment. The Dallas Area Red Cross also trained them to stand ready to assist on behalf of CISDR in case of a regional crisis or disaster. All AmeriCorps members have college experience or are currently completing their college education, receiving an educational award at the end of their contract year.

“CISDR supplies invaluable services to local schools, deliv-ering life-changing results to the capable, but underachiev-ing students that they serve. I am truly proud to be affili-ated with such a high caliber organization.”

— Matthew Papenfus Turner Construction Co. CISDR Board Member

What CISDR Has Done to Help Us

Nick — Plano East Class of 2010For students like Nick, Communities In Schools Dallas Region (CISDR) was his personal GPS for academic success. Nick was referred to CISDR during his freshman year at Plano East Senior High School, and he stayed with CISDR through all four years of high school. “CISDR helped me improve my grades and was the only ‘club’ I was a member of. They helped me stand up for myself and be more talkative and break out of my quiet shell.” With the help of CISDR’s campus staff, Nick discovered his love of math and science. With an increased confidence and a new love of learning, Nick succeeded in his classes and graduated on time in the Spring of 2010. He is now attending Collin College in Plano and wants to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering. In ten years, Nick hopes to be working on his dream job at NASA mission control.

“CISDR helps students by giving them a mentor; someone that they can count on, someone that believes in them, and someone who helps them succeed in life.”

— Carrie Matthiesen Najim Family Foundation CISDR Board Member

Cristal — Barbara Cardwell Class of 2011Cristal joined CISDR in the 7th grade. “At first I didn’t want to talk to anyone, but after while, I started to open up about things that I had been through. CISDR would listen to me and not judge. I started to come to school more, and started to like myself.” Unfortunately, Cristal later trans-ferred to another school where CISDR was not available. Without CISDR to guide her. Cristal got involved with a bad crowd and experimented with drugs. She eventually ended up at Barbara Cardwell Career Preparatory Center in Irving, one of CISDR’s partner schools. There CISDR campus staff started meeting with Cristal every week, monitoring her grades, tutoring her and encouraging her attendance. Cristal is a senior on the Applied Tech-nology Track, and is very happy with her life now. “I love to come to school and learn,” she says. Cristal now encourages younger students who are going through what she did when she was their age. “I tell them my story and of how CISDR can help them and how it changed my life for the better.”

For the second year in a row, Communities In Schools Dallas Region has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent evaluator of charities.

Ken Berger, President and CEO of Charity Navigator said, “Only 20% of the chari-ties we rate have received at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Communities In Schools Dallas Region consistently executes its mission in a fis-cally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America. This “exceptional” designation from Charity Navigator dif-ferentiates Communities In Schools Dallas Region from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”

CISDR is only 1 of 210 edu-cational nonprofits in the U.S. and 1 of 8 in Texas to receive their highest rating.
