ITENE, PackagINg, TraNsPorT & LogIsTIcs rEsEarch cENTEr

ITENE, is the center of referen-ce in R&D&I in Spain in the tech-nologic field of packaging, logis-tics, transport and mobility.

ITENE’s mission is focused on scientific in-

vestigation, technologic development and

the transfer of innovation in packaging, lo-

gistics and transport matters to improve

business’ competitiveness and contribute

to their globalization.

ITENE carries out its mission by means of

scientific and technical excellence as well

as a high specialization of its professionals,

through an integrated vision of the supply

chain.

The work carried out by ITENE is applied to

all activities in all productive sectors, from

the point of view of general interest, pu-

blic utility and social progress. It is estima-

ted that more than 10 million people bene-

fit directly or indirectly from the results of

ITENE’s work.

ITENE takes part in and leads European, na-

tional and regional investigation projects,

collaborating with other prestigious R&D&I

centers.

ITENE is part of the Network of Technologi-

cal Institutes of the Valencian Region (REDIT)

and the Spanish Federation of Technology

Centres (FEDIT). ITENE also actively collabo-

rates with worldwide institutions, encoura-

ging cooperation, technological spreading

and research excellence.

This investment has been useful in order to

create the Waste Pre-treatment Plant and

the Nanotechnology Pilot Plant. This amount,

together with an investment of 1.4 million

euros in previous years, brings up the to-

tal investment in equipment to more than 3

million euros since the opening of the new

headquarters.

The Waste Pre-treatment Plant allows to

know the potential effective energy use of

packaging waste. The plant is able to carry

out classification, washing, drying, metal eli-

mination and waste grinding processes to

obtain an optimum preparation process. It

also allows to analyze the potential effective

waste use, either for recycling or to obtain

energy.

The Nanotechnology Pilot Plant develops

new packaging materials. It prepares and

treats clays to be modified to a nano scale

which will later be used to develop new com-

pounds with improved properties.

Their scope of action is regional, national

and international. ITENE has signed collabo-

ration agreements with 83 scientific-tech-

nological agents. ITENE also encourages the

participation of Spanish companies in pro-

jects which offer opportunities on a national

and European level. From 2007 to 2010 these

projects generated about 3,5 millions euros.

ITENE openly disseminates the results of

its investigations, therefore benefitting the

society. This way, ITENE helps scientific pro-

gress and its impact on the economic envi-

ronment and society in general.

Researchers participate in specialization

and training activities: Presentations, con-

ferences, project and results presentations

in technological fairs, study visits, R&D&I co-

llaborations, directed or codirected docto-

ral theses and senior projects.

R&D&I PROJECTS BUILDING KNOWLEDGEITENE has encouraged scientific and technological cooperation at a European level in the following research areas:}

applications to improve people’s quality of

life and reduce the impact of human activity

on natural resources and the environment.

From 2009 to 2010, despite the economic cri-

in more R&D&I projects than in previous years.

A total of 488 companies have participated in

projects with ITENE. 87% of the center’s ac-

ITENE, through the open dissemination of its activities and their results, contributes in scientific progress and its impact on the economic environment and society in general.

ITENE’s activity has a wide media coverage

by means of news, articles, reports, scien-

tific articles… etc., through both media for

the general public and highly specialized me-

dia. This open diffusion takes the form of

articles and reports in publications aimed

at businesses, spreading acts and training

sessions open to the public, documenta-

tion on current affairs regarding scientific

spreading or attending trade fairs in order

to present ITENE’s research achievements

and get to know what is being done in other

areas.

General dissemination of activities

ITENE is considered by the media a source of

authorized scientific and technical informa-

tion. ITENE’s researchers’ statements have

a reference value and this has been proven

whenever it has been asked to intervene in

general interest issues, such as withdrawal

of plastic bags campaigns in supermarkets

or research in intelligent packaging for food.

ITENE annually generates more than 700

appearances in the media both general and

specialized.

Knowledge dissemination in public open days

In 2009 and 2010 ITENE organized 48 acti-

vities directed at society in general, with no

admission charge and had more than 2,500

attendees. These events took place in Valen-

cia, Madrid, Barcelona, Lleida, Alicante, Elche,

Zaragoza, Castellón, Alcoy (national terri-

tory) and Tainjin and Brussels abroad.

Also in 2009 ITENE participated in 7 national

and international fairs held in Madrid, Bar-

celona, Valencia, Hannover and Japan, where

it announced its research results to the in-

dustrial and commercial fields.

In 2010 the participation in fairs focused on

the Africa Food Fair in Dakar, Easy Fairs in

Barcelona and Madrid and Toc Europe in Va-

lencia.

Innovation

27% of ITENE’s activity is the development

of innovation projects in companies. SMEs

have opted for an efficient supply chain and

have relied on the research center to do so.

ITENE has provided information systems;

resource development and management

tools to obtain financing so SMEs can ac-

cess these solutions.}

A service which allows to find out in what measure each product influences greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The Carbon Footprint calculates the environmental impact produced by a product throughout its life.

Knowing Carbon Footprint today is essential,

especially in a society compromised with the

conservation of the environment. We want

to and must know the impact of what we

consume so that we can choose responsibly.

The carbon footprint also allows public au-

thorities and administrations to make deci-

sions about those activities which generate

greenhouse gases. Knowing the sources of

the emissions allow not only to set goals,

but also to quantify them and take the most

appropriate measures, minimizing their eco-

nomic impact. The carbon footprint will allow

to plan, correct and, ultimately, reduce emis-

sions to the atmosphere.

“The carbon footprint is also an excellent differen-tiation tool. It allows com-petitive advantage before customers, public admi-nistrations and, in general, before a society that de-mands a responsible en-vironmental behavior”

ITENE gives priority in its strategy to the integration and continuous training of spe-cialized technical staff, in order to expand its research capacity and therefore its ability to generate knowledge.

During 2009 the center continued with the development of 7 doctoral theses and the di-rection of 6 senior projects. In 2010 the num-ber of doctorate students in ITENE was 13.

In this respect stands out the fact that ITENE is the research center which has grown the most regarding the number of doctors among its staff, triplicating this number in the past 3 years.

ITENE has introduced a specialization and training program based on stays in scientific centers of international reference involving 17 members of its staff during 2009 and 2010 in Grenoble, Michigan, Bremen, Atlanta, Mani-toba and Edinburgh.

ITENE destined 200.000 euros to the area of staff training.
