Executive Message

ALEX BURDENExecutive Director

MARY HUNKELERBoard Chair

Dear Friends , The Truman Library Institute is extremely grateful for the leadership and generosity we have received from our vol-unteers and donors during 2010. The support of so many friends allowed us to advance the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum’s efforts to preserve and share President Truman’s remarkable legacy. During 2010, we collectively devoted much of our time, energy and financial resources to commemorating the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. The Truman Library Institute’s KOREA60 commemoration surpassed all expectations for properly remembering and honoring veter-ans of the Korean War, while also reminding an international audience of the important, world-altering decisions President Truman made. We offer our sincere thanks to everyone who so readily agreed to support our KOREA60 programs – and especially the following individuals and partners:

•Congressmen Ike Skelton and Emanuel Cleaver, II, Senator Kit Bond and all the members of the KOREA60 Honorary Committee.

•Gen. David H. Petraeus, the keynote speaker of our Korean War Veterans Appreciation Ceremony.

•The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, the US Army Command and General Staff College, and the Government of the Republic of South Korea through the Korean Consulate General in Chicago.

•The generous corporations, foundations and individuals who sponsored KOREA60 – including our lead sponsors – the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and the Courtney S. Turner Charitable Trust. (See complete list on page 11)

Thanks to their leadership, involvement and financial support, the Truman Library Institute was able to offer a compelling slate of KOREA60 programs throughout 2010 – including the following highlights:

•On June 21, General David Petraeus appeared as the keynote speaker of the Institute’s Korean War Veterans Appreciation Ceremony. This moving tribute was attended by more than 2,100 individuals – including 450 Korean War veterans, nu-merous elected and military officials, international dignitaries and representatives.

•The special exhibit, Memories of Korea, was viewed by more than 60,000 Truman Library visitors during its March though December run.

•The Howard and Virginia Bennett Forum on the Presidency, held in November, received national attention, thanks to the topic of discussion, Presidents at War: Korea to Afghanistan, and the featured panelists, The Hon. Bob Kerrey, Senator Evan Bayh and historians Douglas Brinkley and Andrew Bacevich.

We are grateful to the friends and benefactors who made these and other programs possible during the past year, and we hope this annual report gives you an idea of what the Truman Library Institute was able to accomplish. With your ongoing support, we will continue drawing on the life, legacy and values of Harry S. Truman in order to enrich the public’s understanding of history, the presidency, and the importance of civic engagement.

Sincerely,

Mary Hunkeler and Alex Burden

139 Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photographs Capture Moments of Triumph and Tragedy

The Truman Library hosted the most comprehensive display of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs ever shown in the United States. Capture the Moment included all winning images from

1942-2008. Behind each prize-winning image was the compelling story of the photographer who, coincidentally or courageously, was present to “capture the moment.”

On March 27, 2010, the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum launched a powerful new exhibition commemorating the 60th anni-versary of the start of the Korean War. Not simply a military history, Memories of Korea helped Museum visitors feel the impact of the Korean conflict and legacy through the eyes of those who lived there, who fought there, and who were permanently changed by what happened there. Organized around four thematic areas – Culture and History, Antecedents, War, and Legacy – the Truman Library’s historians and curators culled the presidential archives to present an interactive, multi-media experience drawn on the personal as well as the political. At the core was the highly detailed war record left by President Truman’s administration. The experience also included

on-the-ground film footage, audio stations featuring first-person interviews, large-scale photographs, personal memorabilia, family letters, diary entries and much more. Through this unique and original presentation, a personal, powerful and often times brutal picture of the Korean War emerged, forever changing the way we think and feel about “The Forgotten War.” Approximately 60,000 Truman Library visitors toured the exhibition during its run. The Truman Library Institute would like to thank the Courtney S. Turner Charitable Trust for its title-sponsorship of the exhibit.

“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We thoroughly enjoyed the Korean War Veterans Appreciation Ceremony…It was a fantastic, memorable day…I will remember my dad’s smile and tears for a lifetime.”

Pam MaherDaughter of a decorated Korean War Veteran

“It is fitting that an appreciation ceremony for Korean War veterans be conducted under that auspices of an institute named after Harry Truman. The Harry S. Truman Library’s Institute is the proper one to help say thank you to that generation that did so well and fought so courageously on the peninsula of Korea.”

Ike Skelton United States Representative and Ceremony Honorary Co-Chair

“Today, I feel I know exactly what Harry Truman would do if he were able to be here. I believe he would leave his prepared remarks on this podium and walk down the aisles to look into the eyes and to shake the hands of each of you here today who were asked to risk everything in the defense of our democratic ideals. He would say “thank you”… he would say “I know the suffering of a soldier” … he would say “I thought of you every day for the rest of my life.”

Clifton Truman Daniel Honorary Chairman, Truman Library Institute

“Please know that it was a privilege and an honor to participate in this impressive and moving ceremony and to affirm to the veterans of the so-called “Forgotten War” that they are actually very much remembered. Please pass along my thanks and congratulations to the Board of Directors and the KOREA60 Honorary Committee – the commemoration was absolutely wonderful.”

TEACHER INSTITUTES AND OUTREACH

Summer Institute - America at War: 1950-2010July 12-16, 2010

Educators from across the nation attended the seventh annual Summer Teachers Institute at the Harry S. Truman Library and

Museum. Focused on the theme, America at War: 1950-2010, teachers had the opportunity to hear scholars from around the

nation discuss the 60th anniversary of the Korean War and its legacy, the latest research on topics such as the Vietnam War, the

Iran hostage crisis, the end of the Cold War and present day conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the conclusion of this intensive week-long

program, educators created lesson plans and teaching materials based on the presentations. These lesson plans are now accessible to all

teachers at trumanlibrary.org.

National History Day Workshop for EducatorsOctober 30, 2010

The Truman Library’s education team helped prepare area teachers to inspire and guide student participation in the National History Day Contest.

“THE BUS STOPS HERE” FIELD TRIP GRANT PROGRAM The recent economic downturn has decimated local school districts’ budgets, which in turn has dramatically diminished teachers’ abilities to take their classes on enlightening field trips to local cultural and history-based organizations. The Truman Library experienced this unfortunate trend during the fall of 2008. In response, the Truman Library Institute decided to underwrite the participation costs of our two core programs - guided Museum tours and the White House Decision Center - for any school that wanted to come to the Truman Library, but could not because of funding issues.

We are pleased to report that this program has reversed the declining student participation in our programs. Thanks to the support of a group of generous underwriters, “The Bus Stops Here” Field Trip Grant Program provided the funds necessary for 3,310 students to visit the Truman Library during the 2009-2010 school year. None of these students would have been able to experience the wonderful resources of the Truman Library without this new scholarship program.

“The Bus Stops Here” Program is funded, in part, by: CPS Foundation, Francis Family Foundation, Arvin Gottlieb Foundation, Edward G. and Evelyn E. Mader Foundation, Marny and John Sherman, and the Ten Ten Foundation.

For additional information about any of the Truman Library Institute’s educational programs contact Mark Adams, Education Director, at (816) 268-8236 or [email protected].

Research Grants & Awards Since it first opened its Research Room in 1959, the Truman Library has welcomed nearly 14,000 historians, writers and scholars from 40 nations and nearly every state in the Union. The Truman Library Institute is proud of the strong role it has played supporting scholarly research throughout its fifty-three year history. The rich scholarship that exists regarding one of America’s greatest Presidents can surely be attributed to the cumulative $2.3 million the Truman Library Institute had provided to scholars and researchers via Research Grants, Dissertation Fellowships, and the biennial Scholar’s Award and Truman Book Award.
