SERD Annual Report -2011-201

Introduction:

SERD has already been working with people standing away from the main stream of development, uncared population and humans in need since 20 years. It is very sorry to note that still thousands of people are living below poverty line, gaps between rich and poor is widening and under developed communities are trying to come into social and economical growth. We felt that voluntary activities for these people should be implemented with social concern and true dedication. Natural disaster like thane storm wind cause heavy loss in two districts of Tamilnadu. Victims of the districts have4 strongly noted that another 25 years are needed for the complete rehabilitation. News papers have notices that caste based violence on September 11th of 2011 has claimed 5 lives of the innocent dalits in Paramakudi of Ramnad district. Power cut was increased for more than 9 hours a day that pushed back the total economics of the state and many small industries are in position to shut down. Increase of bus ticket fare and flying up of the prices of essential for life are main issues developed in this year. Apart from this context, SERD extended many social and economical improvement activities for the betterment of the under developed communities.

It is very happy to present our activities report 2011-12 for the public stakeholders, donors and well wishers. Main components are

Activities Detail:

1. Farmer development:

It is true that people come out from the agriculture is increasing that is always not good for our country because the growing population urged our government to supply enough food grains. Farm activities are the only instrument to promote the food grain production and supply them to the big population in our country. Traditional old methodologies in the agriculture activities are insufficient. It is a time for the farmers to come into the modern technologies and improve their skill for applying machines, tools and techniques in the daily farm activities. After realizing the need and context of the farmers, SERD goes to the farmers and work for their empowerment. Small, marginal farmers and agri coolies are migrating for seeking employment in the neighbor districts. Many of the farmers borrowed loan with exorbitant rate of interest from the conventional money lenders but they could not repay their dues because they are getting very poor returns. These are the challenges SERD is facing now.

4. Children development efforts:

Manual scavenging is inhumane because it is degrading the dignity of a man and is brought many diseases on the man who does manual scavenging that should be removed from our society. A community has been forced to do manual scavenging for their livelihood since many generations. They are underdeveloped. SERD believed that school education is the only powerful instrument to make fitness for finding decent employments but almost all scavengers are not interest to send

their children to school. SERD generated awareness on the importance of school education and asked the parents to send all children to

Children

school through street theatre and other media strategies in Gandhinagar and Meenakshipuram in Ramnad district. We found 120 drop outs and took them into school. We tried to form and encourage the children to take part in children parliament which can grow up the potential and leadership qualities. We were taken 45 children with their parents to Rameshwaram as exposure tour that was joy for all.

5. Women labour awareness:

Due to the feminization of poverty, women are always under the pressure to go for work to feed the family members and manage the household expenditures. Besides, they are cheap labour forces so that the masters in working places are extremely extracting their manpower, misuse them, giving injustice wages without any privileges. They don’t know their labour rights as per the existing law.

One day short training program was conducted in Bogalur union in which women from 160 groups were actively participated. Canara Bank Manager (Manjur Branch) has presided over the program and gave valuable in puts on savings, labour rights and detailed Government schemes for their economical development.

7. Herbal plantation:

Page 16: Annual Report 2011 2012

16Social Education for Rural Development Annual Report -2011-2012

Our forefathers have already well known the medicinal value of thousands of herbals. They have invented hundreds of medicines and saved the lives of uncounted numbers. Chemical based medicines are giving some side effects which bring health disorders but our generations don’t know them. Herbal medicines are very safe for the people. It is very sorry to note that many herbal plants were disappeared and herbal ingredients were missed in our normal diets. Studies revealed that herbal stock is very less in our region. Herbal growing will yield good income if we grow well. Awareness on the herbal plantation and organic manures was created among 170 people (from 17 groups) in T.pudukottai and then herbal saplings were distributed.

8. Solid waste Management:

In general, all communities are generating huge solid wastes round the clock. We do not see the wastes generated by common households, school, public and private sectors. Degradable wastes like vegetable and paper wastes were cast out in open places so that it created unclean and ugly environment. We should pay more attention to dispose them safely. We organized solid waste management training for 40 women from 7 groups in Sanathi Pudukulam. We educated them to make a pit in the back yard of the houses / at the out skirt of the each street and put all house hold outlets and wastes in it. After degrade/decompose of the wastes within one or two months, we could removed them as organic manure and sale them. If we put earth warms in the waste pit, wastes and out let will decompose very fast and the quality of the manure will be better. We asked the women trainees to clean up their house and street put them in a common pit. SERD dug up a public waste pit in support of the local youth volunteers. We encouraged local SHG to monitor the cleanup activities and asked the panchayat union office to remove the wastes from time to time.

9. Global warming:

Since the increasing of carbon volume in air spheres around our globe caused by high emission of smoke, temperature of the earth is uplifted. In daily life, not only big corporate, an ordinary man also increased air pollution and earth warm through wise less using of two

Page 17: Annual Report 2011 2012

17Social Education for Rural Development Annual Report -2011-2012

wheelers for all locomotion activities, using air condition, smoke emission for cooking and other purposes but he do not know the impacts. Narrowing down of the green cover by cutting down green trees for various reasons and by deforestation is also one of the main reasons for global warming. Tress can intake all carbon for their photosynthesis and then they produce oxygen as outlet. This process will control the excessive stock of carbon in air atmosphere. Evils of global warming are on line in our generation so that we should counter the issue as quick as possible. We explained all these matters in a seminar conducted at Manamadurai. There were 40 potential women from Malapasalai Kilapasalai, Arimandapam, and M. Karisalkulam took part in the seminar, heard and listen all the reasons for the climate change and its impacts. Thereafter they took up a campaign in their villages and aware local people don’t use two wheelers unnecessarily, don’t use fans unnecessarily, don’t use high voltage pulps for house. They asked the public to walk and ride cycle for locomotion that is good for health and earth. Asked them to use tube lights instead of high voltage pulps.

10. Women’s day Celebration:

Voluntary organizations are celebrating women’s day as a big festival. They mobilized thousands of women from all over villages around the town and they organize mass meetings in public places. Now it is become a culture that is good alternative. SERD also mobilized 3000 women from villages into Manamadurai and celebrated women’s day on o8th March 2012. A great procession was started with 3000 women at the

Conclusion:

Defeat of global economy may influence our India but luckily we are staying very safe. Reducing foreign contributions bring forth major impacts on voluntary organizations that urged us to find local donors and support to continue our social activities. SERD sought that we had a good scope to take up humanitarian services, socio economical development activities and awareness generation in overall operational villages. There is a hope even though we are facing many

Page 22: Annual Report 2011 2012

challenges. We would like to give the same hope for the poors, deserted population and forgotten communities. We follow Gandhian philosophy for remove the darkness in the life of the target people, for strengthening the unity and harmony among the different communities to achieve sustainable development. We believed that peace in the heart of a man and community will lead to the true sustainable development. In this view , we again ready to continue our social service journey. Heartfelt thanks to the well wishers, stakeholders, supporters, volunteers, potential leaders, community heads, Local banks, Government agencies, donor partners, staff and other people remaining with us. Looking for their supports in future too. With great dreams and hopes, SERD is going to work with its target groups in coming year.

With high regards and social concern,
