The Institute is well recognized for Testing and Standardization of wood products and composites fromwood and other lignocellulosics. The testing labs in the Institute have NABL accreditation for Testing andEvaluation of Wood Composites in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

A multipronged approach is adopted by IPIRTI for quick dissemination of new technologies for the benefit ofthe industry by periodically organizing IPIRTI-Industry meet which is one of the regular features of theInstitute and such meet provides valuable opportunities for plywood manufacturers and consumers to exchangefacts, views and challenges for trade and technological development.

1.1 In-House Projects

a Development of fire retardant Flush Door

Flush door made of wood is susceptible to fire. The danger is more when such doors are used in high risebuildings. Research work has been undertaken to enhance the fire retardency of flush door by adding fireretardant chemicals in the resin system and also treating battens and veneers. Full Door of size 3’ x 6’ wastested for fire rate using the facilities established for fire door testing at the institute. It was observed that therating had to be improved further. Trials on further improvement using barriers are being taken up. Theprocess parameters for glue application onto the barriers, handling and the resin formulation have beenworked out. Doors have been made using 2 different combinations of barriers. The Door frames withflexible sealing materials to make the doors to fit into the door frames airtight are being made. Immediately thedoors would be subjected to fire rating test as per BIS standards.

a Evaluation of Earthquake resistant feature of Bamboo Housing system using shock table

The prototype house was made using split bamboo grid and wire mesh, plastered with cement mortar forwalls, with bamboo columns providing support. The prototype resisted seven repetitions of a typical Zone 5earthquake, the highest in India and equivalent to over 7 on the Richter scale, showing no signs of fallingapart, in contrast to a concrete structure. When most intensive shocks were delivered a few cracks wereobserved at the end of the shock period. This shows the earthquake resistant feature of the Bamboo housingsystem developed at the institute.

a Development of technique for production of Face Veneer from reconstituted plantation timbers.

Due to non-availability of traditional Indian hardwoods, at present, imported timbers like Keruing/Gurjanare peeled to make 0.23 to 0.28 mm thick face veneers and species like Teak, White Cedar, Padauk,Mahogany etc, are sliced to make decorative face veneers for making plywood. The sources of supply ofthese imported species are getting depleted drastically, day by day. Hence it was felt necessary to find outalternate methods of making face veneers to meet the challenges posed by the shortage of face qualityveneers and this is very essential for continuing the production of plywood in the industry without disruption. In this study flitching of sizes 2.5 m x 0.15m were made by Multi laminar wood (MLW)/Reconstituted woodtechnique using plantation species Poplar, Eucalyptus and Rubber wood. Sliced veneers were producedwith different grain patterns. An attempt was also made to develop the technology for manufacturingreconstituted face quality wood veneers by dyeing the poplar veneers of 1.6 mm which are imitative ofvarious types of wood and can be used for face/decorative overlaying. The resulting veneers have uniformcolour in all spots of the veneer with thorough penetration. Reconstituted wood or MLW is mainly used forproducing sliced decorative veneers hence the scope is limited to appearance and not on its performancehowever evaluation on the quality of veneer produced were carried out as per specifications for veneereddecorative plywood. It has been observed that the quality of veneer produced is satisfactory and meets therequirements as per IS:1328 – 1996(Specification of decorative plywood). The cost of the decorative veneersthus produced using this technique is much cheaper as the cost of imported species is 10 -14 times higherthan that of Plantation species.

a Development of Bio Adhesives with less emission of formaldehyde for Wood and Panel Products

Synthetic formaldehyde based wood adhesive releases formaldehyde from the products made using theseresins. Urea formaldehyde resin based adhesive is the worst which, due to slow decomposition, continues toemit formaldehyde until the usable life of the product. Bio adhesive is one of the best means of reducingrelease of formaldehyde from synthetic adhesive. Hence this study to search alternatives to formaldehyde soas to minimize the emission levels of formaldehyde from the products was taken up.

Formulations were worked out using furfuraldehyde in phenolic and amino resin. Partial replacement offormaldehyde by furfuraldehyde was also carried out. It was observed that phenolic resins developed gaveencouraging results and confirmed to boiling water resistance grade. Urea furfuraldehyde resin and Ureaformaldehyde resin with partial replacement of formaldehyde with furfural have been worked out on laboratoryscale. It was observed that the resin made with urea furfuraldehyde had limited storage life while urea furfuralformaldehyde resins gave satisfactory results w.r t. MR grade properties with requisite shelf life.

a Development of Technology for manufacture of particle board from bamboo and bagasse

Due to the increasing shortage of industrial wood and also associated policy changes in recent years, agroresidues like Bagasse has become an important raw material alternative to wood for panel products. In thisstudy, investigations were carried out to manufacture particle boards from depith bagasse, pith bagasse andreplacing 30-40% of bagasse by wood. From the test results of particle boards made, it is found that thebagasse with pith and without pith is suitable for the manufacture of flat pressed three layered Grade-2 (FPT-2) Particle boards and meets the requirements as prescribed in IS 3087(2005) for Grade 2 Medium DensityParticle board. It can be concluded from the results that pith does not show much effect on the properties ofbagasse particle board as per minimum values of standards (IS: 3087).To achieve higher strength propertiesand a better surface finish of the boards, depithing is necessary. Bagasse particles replaced by 30 & 40% ofpoplar wood particles has shown excellent properties.

aaaaa Development of UV & Weather Resistant Coating for Wood based Panel products and BambooComposites for Exterior Application

This study is taken up to develop a longer exterior durable UV radiation protective coating for plywood andbamboo composites which will have photochemical stability of the wood surface beneath the coating thusminimizing flaking due to photo induced wood degradation. Silicone based coating has been established byreacting Hydroxyl terminated silicone compounds with Alkyd resin to form a copolymer. In evaluating productswith plywood and bamboo mats four general type of environmental factors are examined such as heat,Moisture, ultraviolet and bio-deterioration. Natural weathering test is being carried out since last six monthsat 45Ú angel south facing rack system, the samples have also been exposed to artificial weathering test in aWeather-o meter at 340nm for UV deterioration. Other tests by ASTM Standards and characterization ofcoating like glossiness, Coating thickness, Process optimization is under progress.

aaaaa Efficacy of Copper–Ethanolamine-Boron based wood preservative against wood destroyingorganisms

The main aim of this project was to find out the alternative fixing agent to chromium. Chromium is being usedto fix copper and boron in the wood. Chromium is carcinogenic in nature. Moreover it has been banned inmany European countries and hence attempt is being made to use ethanolamine in place of chromium to fixthe copper and boron in the wood.

A new environmental friendly formulation by using copper-ethanolamine-boron (CEB) has been developed. The percentage of chemical incorporation in glue line has been optimized. Negligible amount of active ingredientwas found in the leachate. Samples were tested for glue shear strength in dry, wet and mycological state asper IS: 1734 part (4) 1983 and results were compared to IS 710-1976 and was found that sample conformsfor the above mentioned test. From the toxicological studies it was found that CEB 2.5 percent performedexcellent against the various wood destroying organisms. Factory trial was done at M/s. Green ply IndiaLimited, Kolkata.

aaaaa Up-scaling of Technology for manufacture of single/3-layered Particle Board from Rice Husk

Research work to find ways and means to utilize rice husk for the production of useful materials has beenunder way for the past two decade or so. Research work was undertaken at IPIRTI to manufacture ofParticle Board from rice husk and the technology was commercialized by transfer of technology throughNRDC. However, the product could not take the market share for several reasons-cut edge was sharp, rough surface and overlying was not possible. Hence this study on refining the technology to address all theissues faced in promoting the product in market has been taken up. Pilot plant trials were taken up byadopting the process optimized on laboratory scale. The panels were evaluated for their physical & mechanicalproperties. The panels confirmed to the properties as per IS 3087. Report preparation is under progress.

aaaaa Polyurethane based Adhesive for bonding Wood and Bamboo Based Products

The polyurethane based resin has distinct advantages over the aminoplast and phenolics that are currentlybeing used in the Indian Panel Industry. Polyurethane based resins are fast curing, no emission of formaldehydehence pollution free, high durability, weather and water resistance. Hence this project was proposed todevelop resin system based on polyurethanes which is suitable to Indian condition and in combination withbiomaterials like tannin, lignin, etc., which will not only replace existing PF resin but also have cost effectiveness.

Polyurethane resin was used in this study to block the NCO groups. The resin formulation and the processparameters for the manufacture of Blocked Polyurethane resin has been worked out and the process parametersfor making BWP grade plywood has been optimized. The panels made with a mixture of Blocked Polyurethaneresin with PCF resin (1:1) confirms to the requirement of BWP Grade plywood as per IS 848:2006. It hasbeen found that 100% NCO has been blocked in the present formulation by FTIR analysis. Further work tocarry trials on plant scale is under progress.

aaaaa Development of alternative preservative treatment procedure for marine /shuttering gradeplywood

In India the most common method to treat the plywood with preservative chemical is glue line poisoning(GLP). But in the GLP treatment method, treatment is given to the inner part and the exposed surface remains

Page 13: Annual Report 2011-2012 - IPIRTI · Ltd., Kolkata; M/s. Mangalam Timber Products Ltd., Orissa; M/s. Timpack Pvt. Ltd. Meghalaya, M/s. DIAB Core Materials Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, M/s

5I P I R T I Annual Report 2011-2012

untreated and obviously prone to the attack of fungus in severe climatic conditions. There is no establisheddata on the performance of glue line treated plywood under actual marine condition. In spite of excellentperformance of glue line treated plywood against borer under interior and exposed terrestrial condition, thesame plywood has not been recommended to use as shuttering and marine plywood. It has been observedthat loading of 12 kg/m3 of preservative chemicals by recommended process is very difficult and if this isdone by pressure impregnation process, lot of damage takes place to the plywood. To overcome this, alternative treatment method is GLP. Hence in the proposed study attempt is being made to treat the veneersby surface treatment (dipping) followed by GLP Using suitable chemicals so as to compete with the requirementof IS 710 and IS 4990.

Face veneer was treated by dipping in 1% solution of Copper-Ethanolamine-Boron. In the glue line CEBcombination was used and plywood was made to test the Glue shear strength. Samples were tested for glueshear strength in dry, wet and mycological state as per IS: 1734 part (4) 1983 and results were compared toIS 710-1976 found that sample conforms for the above mentioned test. Samples were prepared and exposedagainst borer and termite thirty six months study has been completed and all the samples are absolutely freeof attack from wood destroying bio -agents.

aaaaa Development of Fire Retardant Particle Board

Use of particle board in the interior of houses is very common. Such use is not free from fire hazard. Littlework has been carried out on promoting fire retardant PB. Under the present project effect of fire retardantchemicals on the manufacturing of wood particle board are being studied. The resin formulations and thechemicals required to enhance the fire retardancy in the plywood were identified and accordingly the resinformulations have been worked out to manufacture fire retardant particle board. Since there are no BISstandards to evaluate the fire retardancy of particle board, the panels were evaluated as per IS 5509:Specification for fire retardant plywood. The fire retardant results are encouraging, Further the physical andmechanical properties of the treated particle boards were found satisfactory as per IS:3087.

aaaaa Development of Fire retardant cum Preservative Coating of Wood Based Panel Products andBamboo Composites

An intumescent fire retardant coating that not only retards the spread of fire but also insulate the substratefrom intense heat of fire has been developed on the basis of poly sulphide based epoxy resin. Product hasbeen tested as per different standards. Flame penetration data has been obtained up to 2 hours which wastested as per IS: 5509. The developed fire retardant coating has indicated satisfactory results. Comparativetest has also been carried with conventional Fire Retardant Chemicals available in the market. Coatingformulation in larger scale by coating in flush door shutter for fire retardancy test in fire resistance door testingequipment is under progress.

aaaaa Evaluation of synergistic effect of metal chelators with wood preservative chemicals in woodpreservation

The heartwood of certain trees is naturally resistant to decay fungi and/or termite. Naturally durable timberincludes teak, cypress etc. This timber is relatively expensive and harvest restrictions may limit future availability. The heartwood is durable due to the presence of toxic extractives. These toxic extractives have biocidal, antioxidant and metal chelating properties, all of which may influence natural durability of the wood. In this

Page 14: Annual Report 2011-2012 - IPIRTI · Ltd., Kolkata; M/s. Mangalam Timber Products Ltd., Orissa; M/s. Timpack Pvt. Ltd. Meghalaya, M/s. DIAB Core Materials Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, M/s
