I am pleased to report that 2011 was another outstanding year for the company. The Australian Ballet once again achieved success artistically and financially.

All areas of the organisation flourished. We presented 156 mainstage performances, including Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly, Sir Robert Helpmann and Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow and the world premiere of Graeme Murphy’s Romeo & Juliet. Mainstage performances attracted almost 220,000 paid attendances, translating to a healthy box office result. Audiences across the country embraced all forms of ballet, in theatres large and small, and on the big and small screen.

In 2011 we presented 639 education events, up from 535 events in 2010, and over 20,000 people participated in our programs. Education is a significant developing pillar for the company; our education programs are extremely well received, and demand is so high that we are unable to meet it within our current resource structure. I want to make special mention of our schools and community program, Out There – The Australian Ballet in schools, now in its seventh year. Our specially trained Dancers Education Ensemble delivers one the world’s most progressive and meaningful arts education programs.

While our dancers are elite athletes, ballet is far from elitist. Dance remains a very popular activity. Almost 400,000 children between the ages of 5 and 14 participate in ballet or dance classes across the nation each week. When we take into account their families and friends, the passion for dance in Australia is tremendous.

As a truly national company we take our role of encouraging grassroots and community access to this great art form seriously. We work hard to share ballet with the nation and maintain a presence well beyond Sydney and Melbourne, our subscription season cities. We largely self-fund all activities outside of Sydney and Melbourne to ensure we cover the nation. In 2011 The Australian Ballet, The Dancers Company (our regional touring arm) and the Dance Education Ensemble were warmly welcomed to over 70 locations Australia-wide, representing our contribution to the wider community.

The Australian Ballet continues to enjoy a high level of engagement online. In September 2011, over 30,000 people ‘liked’ The Australian Ballet on Facebook – up from 16,000 at the same time in 2010. This number is three times higher than other Australian major performing arts companies and growing at a rate of approximately 200 people a week, with an average of 500+ comments and 11,500 ‘likes’ a month.

Views on our YouTube channel increased by 27% in 2011 and visits to our Behind Ballet blog increased by 56%. In 2011 our corporate site australianballet.com.au received on average 50,000 visits per month. Our online activity draws visitors from 128 countries to engage with The Australian Ballet.

Graeme Murphy’s Romeo & Juliet sold out in Melbourne and Sydney well before each season opened. The Australian Ballet partnered with STUDIO to broadcast Romeo & Juliet live from the Arts Centre Melbourne, along with a 30 minute behind-the-scenes documentary film of the production. More than 80,000 people tuned in to the live and follow-up broadcasts, which provided access to twice the number of people in the Melbourne and Sydney theatres. Future broadcasts of this work are planned, including one on the free-to-air channel SBS1.

In a first for the company, we broadcast our choreographic discovery program Bodytorque.Muses via live web stream. This initiative, delivered in partnership with our principal partner Telstra through BigPond, was a huge success. In total, more than 20,000 people across the globe watched it live, and in the months following via video on demand. Our relationship with Telstra as our principal sponsor remains one of the longest-standing arts and business partnerships in the country, and we remain indebted to Telstra for their unflagging support in bringing world-class ballet to Australia.

I extend my sincere thanks to all our government and corporate partners, individual donors and audiences for their enthusiasm and support.

I’d like to make a special mention of The Australian Ballet Society, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2011. We truly appreciate The Society’s dedication to the art form and its support of our company and The Australian Ballet School. We are also grateful to the Friends of The Australian Ballet in New South Wales and in South Australia. These volunteer groups provide meaningful support to the company and we owe them many thanks.

By nature, ballet is a multidisciplinary art form. Each performance is supported by experts in our artistic team, production (wardrobe and technical), education, music, finance, company management, marketing, philanthropy, corporate relations, customer services, administration and dance medicine. I wish to extend my thanks to all the dancers and staff of The Australian Ballet and congratulate everyone on another successful year.

In 2011, the company embarked on preparations for the celebration of a major milestone, the 50th anniversary of The Australian Ballet. From its humble yet inspired beginnings, to its 50 years of bringing ballet to stages and communities across Australia and throughout the world, there is much to celebrate. In 2012 we will deliver the biggest ballet footprint in the company’s history. It will be a year of significant celebrations, including world-premiere productions, national touring, exhibitions, and gala performances.

I invite you all to join us in 2012 to celebrate our past while investing in a vibrant and sustainable future for the art form and for The Australian Ballet.

2011 was another successful year for The Australian Ballet, and a great credit to those working so hard to achieve excellence on both sides of the curtain. Onstage, the company continued to deliver artistic excellence to enthusiastic audiences. Our wardrobe and technical teams again achieved magical production values, from the brand-new and lavish Romeo & Juliet to the meticulously refurbished Madame Butterfly and The Merry Widow.

We were true to our motto “caring for tradition and daring to be different” throughout the year, with outstanding audience and critical response. The adventurous world premiere season of Graeme Murphy’s Romeo & Juliet attracted an audience of more than 57,000, and attendances for Stanton Welch’s signature work Madame Butterfly exceeded our expectations, with an average of 95% paid capacity in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

In 2011, as budgeted, the company returned to its historic business model, where an operating deficit in ballet operations is offset by income from our building. On a non-consolidated basis, ballet company operations recorded a deficit of $1.36 million, with The Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre contributing a surplus of $2.47 million. The Australian Ballet continued to build reserves and special purpose funds for the company, providing $846,000 to artistic projects during 2011, as specified by our donors. I am also pleased to report that the net worth of The Australian Ballet Foundation Fund increased by 7%, from $18.82 million to $20.16 million.

Box office was again our main source of income at $21.5 million – 56% of total operating revenue. We cannot thank our loyal audiences enough. We kept

a close eye on ticketing inventory and implemented new strategies, and these measures led to a very positive overall paid capacity of 85%.

In 2010 we recorded our largest ever volume of media coverage but this was eclipsed in 2011 with an impressive increase of 21%.

Corporate relations revenue was steady, and we were delighted to work with our new sponsors Sambag, Napoleon Perdis and Freehills.

We are aware that box office growth has a ceiling – we cannot add more activities to our schedule or more seats in theatres. We anticipate growth in philanthropy, and have invested in our capacity to support our engagement with generous donors. The new structure and personnel are starting to show results and in 2011, annual giving and major gifts to the Foundation achieved their highest level ever at $5.76 million.

Hiring out productions (costumes, sets, scenic cloths, etc) from The Australian Ballet’s repertoire attracts a steady income each year. In 2011 we earned more than 50% above average in this area of our business, due largely to the sale of Cinderella to the Houston Ballet.

Beyond the theatre, the traditional home of ballet, Australians were able to access and experience the athleticism, artistry and beauty of ballet via live television broadcast and web streaming. With enhanced access to the art form came an increased hunger to interact with our company. The Australian Ballet continued to work hard to meet the expectations of our dance-loving nation. Our online presence provided a nationwide and worldwide opportunity to connect with the company and an interactive platform for dialogue about the art form.

The refurbishment of our 22-year-old building, The Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre, began in 2010. During 2011 the external building façade was repaired, and further work and planning is progressing steadily. Meanwhile, the company is getting closer to solidifying plans for another business priority, the building of an exciting new Production Centre and home for our cultural assets.

Over our 50 years, we have invested in Australian creative content and talent, and have become a leading Australian producer and exporter of world class performing arts. Having toured since its infancy, The Australian Ballet has earned an international reputation for technical

excellence, versatility, distinctive repertoire and dramatic flair. We are one of few Australian arts organisations to regularly represent Australia on the international stage and we are celebrated for our unique Australian identity.

All our performances in New York City’s 2011 Fall for Dance program sold out well in advance, creating some great buzz around our full company anniversary tour to the heart of dance in 2012. Our dancers are some of the best in the world, and excellent cultural ambassadors.

An expert administrative team ensures our artistic aspirations can be realised; fulfilling our motto, presenting the most inspiring art possible and sharing it with the widest audience possible. I would like to thank and congratulate David McAllister, our dancers and staff on a fantastic year. Thanks also go to our Board of Directors for their sound advice and governance. We appreciate the committment and support of our donors, corporate partners and government for their commitment to excellence in dance.

The Australian Ballet has defined the face of ballet in Australia for almost 50 years, and so it was with tremendous excitement that we launched our ambitious 50th anniversary season in September 2011. We look forward to working with all our stakeholders – communities, audiences, donors, corporate partners and government – to realise our vision and propel The Australian Ballet into the future. We anticipate inspiring more audiences in 2012 and encourage you all to celebrate and support our national cultural icon in its anniversary year.

After launching the three-year journey to our 50th anniversary in 2010 with a program devoted to the legacy of founding Artistic Director Dame Peggy Van Praagh, 2011 encompassed influences that shaped the early years of our company and our subsequent impact on the international dance world over the past 49 years.

Full-evening narrative works are the lifeblood of every ballet company across the globe. We have been extremely successful in adding to the canon of works over our history and in 2011 we staged two of our most internationally successful pieces, Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly and Sir Robert Helpmann and Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow. Alongside these two radiant ballets was the world premiere of Romeo & Juliet by Australia’s most internationally recognised choreographer Graeme Murphy.

Each work shows the depth and diversity of our company. The gossamer lightness and emotional depths of Madame Butterfly, beautifully refurbished for this season, was lovingly restaged by Stanton, aided by three of his original cast members – Vicki Attard, Damien Welch and Steven Woodgate. It was greeted with high praise and full houses in its Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney seasons. On the other end of the scale The Merry Widow had the dancers flirting and waltzing through this romantic romp under the expert guidance of its original leads, John Meehan and Marilyn Rowe. Once again this much-loved work was warmly welcomed back onto the stage during the Melbourne and Sydney seasons and was the perfect vehicle in which to celebrate the careers of Kirsty Martin and Robert Curran, who retired following each season respectively.

One of the most highly anticipated seasons of the year was the world premiere of Graeme Murphy’s Romeo

& Juliet. Drawing from the universality of Shakespeare’s love story and the dramatic power of Sergei Prokofiev’s score, Graeme, along with creative associate Janet Vernon, costume designer Akira Isogowa, set designer Gerard Manion, lighting designer Damien Cooper and projection designer Jason Lam, created a monumental work that challenged and delighted. Playing to sold-out houses in Melbourne and Sydney, this work was also seen on STUDIO via a live broadcast and will tour to Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in 2012.

British Liaisons brought together three works from three generations of British choreographers: Dame Ninette de Valois’s Checkmate, Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto and Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain©. The premiere in Sydney of this triple treat was also the scene for the elevation of our three newest Principal Artists: Amber Scott, Leanne Stojmenov and Andrew Killian.

Resident Choreographer Stephen Baynes has had a huge influence on the company, creating works of great beauty and complexity. Elegy showcased two of his most spiritual pieces, Beyond Bach and Requiem. At its premiere in 1995 Beyond Bach inspired a standing ovation; it was chosen by Ross Stretton to be a part of his first season at The Royal Ballet. Requiem was commissioned ten years ago as part of the Centenary of Federation. This season saw us partner for the first time with Victorian Opera, while also sharing the stage once again with one of our company’s first Prima Ballerinas, Marilyn Jones.

Bodytorque.Muses featured five new works drawn from a range of creative inspirations. First time “bodytorquers” Vivienne Wong and Lisa Wilson (the 2011 Hephzibah Tintner Fellow) joined Alice Topp, Kevin Jackson and Daniel Gaudiello to create a diverse program that was seen at The Sydney Theatre and, for the first time streamed live on the internet via our Principal Sponsor Telstra’s BigPond website. At the same time we extended our physical presence, with the company presenting an all-star Gala program in Launceston with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as part of the Centenary of the Princess Theatre celebrations.

The Dancers Company launched its tour of Ai-Gul Gaisina’s Don Quixote in Tasmania before heading to regional Victoria, NSW and Canberra. Out There – The Australian Ballet in schools spread the love of dance through their extensive touring across Australia and

though their innovative partnerships with MSO, Bundanon and Western Sydney. Their work links beautifully into our In Theatre program, presented during each of our seasons. Over 20,000 people participated in education activity learning more about the company and getting glimpses of life behind the scenes.

Our dancers were also seen on stages across the world. Amber Scott and Adam Bull took part in Stuttgart Ballet’s 50th Anniversary Gala in February, while Lana Jones and Robert Curran danced with Hong Kong Ballet as part of our ongoing dancer exchange program. October saw four of our dancers perform Glen Tetley’s Gemini as part of the Fall for Dance program at the beautifully refurbished City Center in New York City.

Our annual Pas de Deux in Paradise lived up to its title, with a sold-out weekend at the beautiful qualia resort on Hamilton Island. Also in Queensland, our Telstra Ballet in the Gardens outdoor performance drew a capacity audience, who enjoyed an evening of gala divertissements, a performance by Queensland Ballet and our Telstra Opening Act Competition winners Brisbane City Youth Ballet. The other big competition winner for the year was Chengwu Guo, who took out both the Telstra Ballet Dancer Award and People’s Choice Awards for 2011. He’s the first male dancer to do so in the competition’s nine year history.

We lost a number of our ballet family during the year, including ballerina Caroline Rappel, inaugural company members Rhyl Kennell and Roger Myers, and one of the founders of The Australian Ballet Society, Rosemary Campbell OAM. Each was dearly loved and is sadly missed. We also welcomed new additions Henry Message, first son of Laura Tong and Tristan Message, and Ava Radojevic, whose mum Lucinda Dunn also celebrated the milestone of being the first ballerina to achieve 20 unbroken years dancing with the company.

In 2011 the company both celebrated our past successes and presented some daring and beautiful new works. Our dancers devoured the diverse repertoire, producing some of the company’s finest performances to date, and set the standard for what will be an extraordinarily exciting 50th anniversary season in 2012.

Jim is a Chair of Melbourne Dental Clinic Ltd Melbourne Oral Health Training and Education Centre (MOHTEC) and a member of the Melbourne Museum board and the Melbourne Grammar School Council. He is the former Chair of the Melbourne Recital Centre, former Chair and now Founding Chairman, Committee for Geelong, former Trustee/Deputy President of the National Gallery of Victoria, and has previously chaired The Public Galleries Association of Victoria, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, and Geelong Art Gallery.

Jim has chaired and been president of the Geelong Art Gallery Foundation, the NGV Foundation, and the Melbourne Recital Centre Foundation.

He was appointed an AO in 2004 and awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by Deakin University in 2004. Appointed Emeritus Trustee National Gallery of Victoria 2009.

Li CunXin

Member of the Foundation Board After seven years of dance training at the Beijing Dance Academy, Li commenced his career at Houston Ballet, rising through the ranks to principal dancer. He joined The Australian Ballet in 1995 and danced a further four years as a Principal Artist while completing his Graduate Diploma at the Securities Institute of Australia.

Li danced many title roles in classical ballets and contemporary works and has worked with internationally acclaimed choreographers.

His best-selling autobiography Mao’s Last Dancer was published in 2003 and the film of his life was launched in 2008 to international acclaim.

Formerly a senior manager at one of the largest stockbroking firms in Australia, Li resigned in February 2012 as Director of The Australian Ballet and as Acting Chairman of the Foundation Board, and in July takes up the role of Artistic Director, Queensland Ballet.

John ELLiCE-FLint

Member of the Audit Committee

Following a 26-year overseas career at Unocal Corporation, John Ellice-Flint became Managing Director and CEO of Santos Limited, Australia’s largest domestic gas producer, from 2000 – 2008.John is current Chairman of the Board of Clean Seas Tuna Limited. After nine years in the role, he retired as the Chairman of the South Australian Museum in November 2011. He is a distinguished alumni of the New England University.

The Board of The Australian Ballet has the ultimate responsibility to its members for the strategy and performance of the company. The Board is dedicated to fulfilling these duties in a lawful and professional manner, and with the utmost integrity and objectivity.

As such the Board actively seeks to pursue best practice governance processes. The Board is governed by the company’s corporate Governance Policy (Board Charter). This policy defines the respective roles, responsibilities and authorities of the Board.

Julie (da Costa) was the inaugural recipient of the Gallery First Nighters’ Scholarship to The Australian Ballet School. After graduating in 1968, she joined The Australian Ballet and for the following 15 years performed an extensive and diverse repertoire of principal and soloist roles, toured widely both nationally and internationally and worked with many of the world’s most renowned choreographers, coaches, teachers and dancers.

Retired as senior artist in 1984, returned as a guest principal artist in 1986 and has since been a guest artist with both the company and the School in various productions. Won a Green Room Award 1985.

Former Member of the Council of Management of The Australian Ballet School and appointed Honorary Life Member in 2002. Former Artistic Advisor to The Australian Ballet School.

As a national company it is our priority to develop and reach audiences across Australia. Government funding supports The Australian Ballet’s mainstage productions in Sydney and Melbourne. We largely self-fund our national tours and education activities to ensure that we cover the nation.

By nature ballet is a multidisciplinary art form integrating dance, music (composition and performance), costume, set and lighting design and recording and broadcast. Each performance is the result of extensive collaboration and multiple forms of traditional and new artistry.

EDuCAtion The Australian Ballet presented 639 education events in 2011, an increase of 19% from 2010. Events included classes, workshops, tours, Q&As, in-theatre and in-community talks. Out There – The Australian Ballet in schools is a program delivered by specially trained members of the company’s Dance Education Ensemble. The program encourages students to be fit, alert and imaginative as they explore the concept of movement.

Almost 21,000 people across the nation participated in The Australian Ballet’s education events in 2011.

The NSW Government provided $23,000 to The Australian Ballet to support its education initiative in Western Sydney. This grant enabled the company to continue working in the region and engage almost 700 students in Western Sydney in 2011.

DigitAL AnD soCiAL MEDiA Digital media provides new and exciting opportunities for deep community engagement. The Australian Ballet’s digital profile is strong and allows us to connect with and inspire Australians in every corner of the country through our corporate website, Behind Ballet blog, mini documentaries, podcasts, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

The Australian Ballet’s corporate website received almost 3,200,000 page views, 620,000 visits and over 320,00 unique visitors in 2011.

The Australian Ballet’s blog Behind Ballet had over 203,000 unique visitors from 128 countries, with most visitors from Australia, United States and Europe.

Our YouTube channel received almost 75,000 views in 2011.

The company’s Facebook page was more than three times as popular that any other performing arts organisation in Australia, with over 30,000 ‘likes’.

Almost half of The Australian Ballet’s dancers tweet, with more than 5,000 followers.

rEgionAL touring The Dancers Company, The Australian Ballet’s regional touring arm, toured Don Quixote to Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Canberra over six weeks. More than 13,000 people in regional towns attended one of 23 performances by The Dancers Company in 2011.

FrEE outDoor pErForMAnCE The annual outdoor performance, Telstra Ballet in the Gardens, took place at Brisbane’s Riverstage in November. The Australian Ballet presented a mixed bill of ballet favourites and included performances by Queensland Ballet and Telstra Opening Act competition winners Brisbane City Youth Ballet. More than 6,000 people of all ages attended and experienced a night of dance under the stars, free of charge.

EXhibitions/othEr spECiAL proJECts The Australian Ballet performed with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in the Centenary Symphony of Dance, a special collaboration to celebrate the 100th birthday of the iconic Princess Theatre in Launceston. We first performed at the Princess for the reopening of the theatre as a live venue on November 16, 1970. The company has returned several times since, including in 1977 to present The Merry Widow with Dame Margot Fonteyn.

ChArity The Australian Ballet donated tickets and merchandise to charities to a value of almost $20,000.

rECorDing AnD broADCAst Our audiences are committed and increasing in numbers. Australians have traditionally experienced ballet in the theatre or in dance studios. With today’s technology, ballet can now be experienced by a wider and more diverse demographic than ever before. As we have limited capacity to schedule additional performances or create more seats in theatres, demand to see ballet online (across all screen formats), on television and in regional cinemas is high. One of The Australian Ballet’s business-critical visions is to provide ballet fans across the country with opportunities to experience our performances, no matter where they may live or what their income may be.

The overwhelming response to the world premiere seasons of Graeme Murphy’s Romeo & Juliet meant that the Melbourne and Sydney shows sold out before they opened. In a show of commitment to ballet for all Australians, the company partnered with STUDIO and beamed a live broadcast from the Arts Centre Melbourne.

Our mini documentaries were also available online and provided over 30,000 unique viewers with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and educational material. Popular documentarys were Romeo & Juliet: the choreography; Lucinda Dunn: 20 glorious years; Health & Lifestyle; and the 2011 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award.

With Telstra and BigPond we presented our first live internet ballet broadcast, Bodytorque.Muses, on Sunday 29 May to ballet fans across the nation. This footage was available as video on demand for the rest of the year.

nEW AustrALiAn WorKs The Australian Ballet has consistently invested in Australian artists. Out of all ballets performed in 2011, more than 20% were new Australian works, including commissioned scores, designs and choreography. In 2012 two of our seasons will include world premiere works – all from Australian creative teams.

CoMMissionsArtistically, The Australian Ballet continues to invest in artists, with a strong commissioning policy that stretches across our many artistic partners in music, design and choreography. The company provides extensive opportunities for our dancers to work with a diverse and eclectic group of creators in developing new works. With a wide array of artistic development programs on offer, from scholarships, exchange programs, regular international touring and exposure to guest teachers and repetiteurs, we ensure our dancers are not cut off from the international dance community so they can continue to grow as artists.

MEDiCALIn 2011 the number of injuries to dancers remained low, with WorkSafe premiums reduced from the previous year. The dancers’ wellbeing was significantly improved by preventative programs and the introduction of one new piece of strengthening equipment. In 2011 The Australian Ballet started a collaboration with Monash University to carry out important research into hip pain in dancers.

ensuRe A sustAinABle Business plAtfoRm

Another year of positive results at the box office was made possible by a strong artistic program and continued developments in customer relationship management:

•�Box�office�was�again�our�main�source� of income in 2011, contributing $21.5 and 56%of total revenue. Our mainstage performances attracted almost 225,000 with our Adelaide audience larger than ever.

•�A�focus�on�inventory�management�and�implementation of new CRM strategies led to overall paid capacity of 85%.

•�Subscription�levels�were�at�18,616�� in Sydney and 14,347 in Melbourne.

Philanthropy continued to be a major focus for the company, reflected in an increase in contributions:

•�The�investment�in�our�new�philanthropy�strategy and personnel is starting to show solid results across annual giving and major gifts to the Foundation; in 2011 philanthropy income was the highest ever at $5.76M.

•�The�net�worth�of�The�Australian�Ballet�Foundation Fund increased by 7%.

•�Hiring�out�productions�(costumes,� sets, cloths etc) from The Australian Ballet’s repertoire attracts a steady income each year. In 2011 we earned more than 50% above average in this stream due largely to the sale of Cinderella to Houston Ballet.

Major infrastructure projects gained momentum:

•�The�external�building�façade�of�The�Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre was repaired and planning continued for the internal refurbishment. Six Degrees was appointed as architect and the project is steadily progressing.

•�The�company’s�Kensington�costume� and scenery store must relocate in 2013. We have developed a plan for a new building, which will provide a great home for our cultural assets, and look forward to making progress on this project in 2012.

Corporate partners continued to generously support The Australian Ballet in 2011:

•�The�corporate�relations�team�reported� a steady net contribution to the company and welcomed three new major partners: Freehills (Official Legal Partner), Napoleon Perdis (Official Beauty Partner) and Sambag (Pointe Shoe Partner).

•�STUDIO,�our�Media�Partner�since�2010, became The Australian Ballet’s Broadcast partner for Graeme Murphy’s Romeo & Juliet in 2011. STUDIO broadcast Romeo & Juliet live from the Arts Centre Melbourne on Wednesday 21 September, making it available to all Foxtel and Austar subscribers nationally. The broadcast was replayed in October, with more than 80,000 combined viewers.

•�2011�marked�27�years�of�partnership�with Principal Sponsor Telstra. Telstra’s sponsorship supported the ninth Telstra Ballet Dancer Award, The Dancers Company tour to Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and Canberra and our annual free outdoor performance Telstra Ballet in the Gardens (Brisbane).

•�NAB’s�support�of�Out There – The Australian Ballet in schools helped us extend the program to include additional schools in 2011. NAB also hosted five Dance the Dream workshops across Australia, featuring former Principal Artists Lynette Wills and Steven Heathcote. Over 580 students nationwide applied to be part of this program, which attracted much media attention.

•�Napoleon�Perdis�and�Sambag�both�created commercial product lines

inspired by Romeo & Juliet, and reported strong retail sales. Napoleon Perdis produced a make-up range called Love Unleashed. Sambag produced a Juliet ballet-flat shoe range. These products were also sold through The Australian Ballet’s online shop.

•�Kawai�conducted�a�piano�sale�at� The Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre, selling Kawai pianos that were used in The Australian Ballet and The Australian Ballet School’s rehearsal studios. A percentage of sales were donated to The Australian Ballet’s music department.

•�For�the�fourth�successive�year,�dancers�travelled to Hamilton Island’s qualia for Pas de deux in Paradise. The weekend featured performances by four principal artists and a Q&A with Graeme Murphy.

18 RELATED PARTIES DISCLOSURE - continued (b) Related Party Transactions: Parent Entity The Australian Ballet occupies office premises on level 4 and 5 of The Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre owned by Australian Ballet Centre Pty Ltd in its capacity as trustee of The Australian Ballet Development Fund. During the year, The Australian Ballet incurred rental costs of $1,149,352 (2010: $1,149,352) and parking costs of $54,840 (2010:$42,970) excluding GST on its occupancy payable to The Australian Ballet Development Fund.

Report on the financial report

We have audited the accompanying financial report of The Australian Ballet (the company), which comprises the balance sheet as at 31 December 2011, and the statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year ended on that date, a summary of significant accounting policies, other explanatory notes and the directors’ declaration for the Australian Ballet group (the consolidated entity). The consolidated entity comprises the company and the entities it controlled at the year's end or from time to time during the financial year.

Directors’ responsibility for the financial report The directors of the company are responsible for the preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards - Reduced Disclosure Requirements and the Corporations Act 2001 and for such internal control as the directors determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor’s responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the directors, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.

Our procedures include reading the other information in the Annual Report to determine whether it contains any material inconsistencies with the financial report.
