Dearest All…

Our annual fund charged into high gear under the leadership of 6th grade

parent Stephen Bedikian, and we hit the long-awaited 100% participation

mark sooner than anyone would have predicted in another Saint James’ first.

The spring event chaired by Clare Cohen and the most professional team

of support players ever assembled transformed our yard into a charming

fairyland of light that truly earned its title: “SHINE!” The March family capped

a year of gifts and glory with a breathtaking addition to our endowment for

tuition assistance.

And yet, the universe in its wisdom brought us tragedy along with joy last

year, and both had much to teach us. The community reached across all

barriers of language and culture to embrace both James and his family when

a 6th grade child was diagnosed with brain cancer. We joined the city’s

Jewish community in an event called “Mapping Auschwitz,” standing shoulder

to shoulder with Holocaust survivors and displaying our solidarity for the

world to see. We faced both life and death together; and by binding the

past with the future, we wove an inextricable love knot in the tapestry of

Saint James’ life.

It was a year of firsts for me: installation as your head of school orchestrated by a

brilliant Board that any leader would die to work for; first Christmas pageant,

speech contest, 6th grade graduation. If I could distill it all into one word, it

would be the very word we choose as the year’s theme: SHINE! And shine we

surely did.

Shine on, Saint James’.

Deborah DavidHead of School

From our first chorus of “This Little Light of Mine” on

the opening day of school, your generosity and warmth

exceeded my most extravagant hopes. I recognized

quite early that I’d found the school home for which I’d

always longed. And through the year our symbiotic

energy fueled a period of intense productivity, good

fellowship, candor, and measureable accomplishments

beyond any in Saint James’ history.

When I look back at the 2011-2012 school year at St. James’, one thing

immediately comes to mind: the arrival of our incredible new Head of

School, Debbi David. What a positive force she is and how grateful we

all are to be able to flourish and grow under her brilliant leadership.

Debbi’s ability to unite and energize every constituency of our community

reminds us that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. For

the first time we achieved 100% participation in our Annual Fund. That

means 100% of our faculty and staff; 100% of our Board of Trustees, and

100% of our parents!

In Chris Cook, our new Director of Advancement, Debbi has found the

perfect partner to pursue the financial resources necessary to improve

and enhance every aspect of our school. With their leadership and that of

our talented and supportive parents, the St. James’ Shines event raised

over $160,000 to fund the arts and improved technology in our classrooms.

Additionally that evening, Debbi announced a landmark gift to our

Endowment for Tuition Assistance from The Glen and Cabrini March Family.

Their generosity combined with that of others ensures that we will be

able to be true to our mission of making a St. James’ education accessible

to families who may not otherwise have the means to pay full tuition.

Debbi often shares her big dreams for our school. We are all amazed and

motivated by her energy and her pace. In turn we are driven to support her in

every way possible. Whether it is building a new preschool, introducing

a new math program, creating learning opportunities for our incredibly

talented faculty, enhancing and improving our arts curriculum, or

providing state of the art technology in our classrooms—all in just one

year. Debbi enjoys the full support of the Board of Trustees and the

broader St. James’ community. We have indeed become greater than the

sum of our parts. Please join me as I look forward to another exciting

year for our wonderful school.

After a lengthy review process, Debbi David determined

that Singapore Math was the strongest program to take

us to the next level. Kindergarten through Second Grade

would use Singapore Math in the 2012-2013 school year,

and then add a new grade each year until the entire school

had transitioned. The Class of 2012 placed sixth overall

in the state for the California Math League Competition,

with two of our student’s receiving the second-highest

score in the state.

“Shine means that you should go above and beyond your expectations, and to really give it your all, and that’s what every kid at St. James’ does.” Nicole Klar, Grade 5

2011-2012 Highlights

We built a beautiful new preschool that officially opened

in September 2012 located one block away from the

elementary school.

We expanded our wonderful science program to incorporate S.T.E.M. – an acronym for the fields of study in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Our inaugural Robotics Team were the only elemen-tary school team to compete winning awards for robot design, teamwork and sportsmanship in a competition at Windward School. The competition was focused on the way we use robots and other technology to keep our food supply safe.

In support of our commitment to the arts, we introduced our Arts In Motion Program bringing a diverse group of visiting artists to campus throughout the school year.

The Class of 2012 will go down in history for defeating the Center For Early Education’s Sixth Grade volleyball team for the first time in a record number of years!

2011 (finanical report)

The year ending June 2012 again saw a challenging environment, with

enrollment down and a continued high demand for tuition assistance.

Nevertheless, thanks to strong annual giving, tight expense control and

the absence of the previous year’s exceptional expenditures related to

hiring a new Head and Development Director, the School was able to

report an operating surplus of $210,709, compared to a loss in 2010/11.

I would like to thank all the parents and friends who contributed to the

Annual Fund. 100% of parents made a contribution to the Annual Fund,

the first time this has been achieved. As you all know, Tuition Fees do

not cover operating costs so we are only viable if families also contribute

generously to the Annual Fund. We also benefited from a very successful

Spring Event and other contributions from the Parent Support Fellowship.

The School needs to generate operating surpluses to have the resources

available for major maintenance projects and upgrades to our facilities, as well

as to handle emergencies like an earthquake. This year saw a major improvement

in our facilities with the new Preschool. The cost of this, amounting to over

$900,000 including various extras, is not included in operating expenses but

is capitalized and then depreciated over the life of the building. We received

$206,000 in special donations for the Preschool (which also do not appear in

operating income) for which we are very grateful. The remaining costs were

financed from operating reserves.

Thanks to the new, enlarged Preschool, the dynamic leadership of our

new Head and her team and a somewhat better economy, enrollment was

up strongly in the current year. Enrollment inquiries for next year are also

very encouraging. On the expenses side, we are spending money on

various improvements in our programs such as the new Math Specialist,

Rev. Elizabeth Thayer, who joined our staff this year.

This year marked a historic milestone for our school. We reached 100% participation in our Annual Fund amongst the parent community for the very first time, joining our wonderful faculty, staff and our Board of Trustees who also met this ambitious goal. St. James’ is financed by a combination of tuition, private donations and endowment income.

Annual Giving totaled $536,241. In addition, $263,671 was received in grants and donations for special programs. Special events netted $116,000, not including a $20,000 donation from the Parent Support Fellowship (PSF). The dynamic PSF raised $82,000 during the year to support the school in a multitude of ways. All numbers have been audited.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who contributed to these successful efforts.

In 2008, the St. James’ Board of Trustees launched the Endowment Fund, in

recognition of the school’s 40th Anniversary, but more importantly to fortify the

school’s distinguished legacy of quality education for generations to come.

In the spring of 2012, Drs. Glen and Cabrini March made a generous leadership

pledge of $500,000 to the St. James’ Endowment Fund to support the school’s

Tuition Assistance Program. The socio-economic diversity that St. James’

benefits from have been a part of the school’s DNA for the last forty years.

Thanks to the vision and generous support of the March Family, it will continue to

be for generations to come.

Please consider becoming part of the St. James’ legacy by giving generously to the St. James’ Episcopal School Endowment Fund.

Donations to the Endowment Fund may be designated or unrestricted, and the principal of the gift remains intact in perpetuity, allowing the donation to have an immediate as well as long term impact on the lives of countless children for generations to come.

CONTINUING TO BUILD THE ENDOWMENT FUND IS CRUCIAL TO THE OVERALL SUCCESS OF OF ST. JAMES’ BY:

heartfelt gratitude to all those who have made visionary endowment gifts

to enhance the present and secure the future of St. James’.

St. James’ Parent Support Fellowship (PSF) is an integral and dynamic

volunteer support group, and the main avenue to parent involvement for all

St. James’ families at our school. Strong parent participation is an important

part of what makes St. James’ extraordinary. Our parent body comes together

with faculty, staff and students to enhance the educational experience,

creating enriching opportunities within and outside the school, providing

a strong sense of community and helping make the school year fun and

productive for all. The PSF supports the community of the school through

volunteer activities, fundraising events, enhancing friendships among parents

and promoting the mission of the school.
