Annual Report 2012—2013

Class of 2013

Chester County

Dear Friends, At Chester County Futures, we believe the long-term solution to helping our students break destructive cycles and move on to lead self-sufficient lives is to encourage them to achieve post-secondary educations. We offer our motivated young people academic enrichment, mentoring and financial support with the goal of equipping them with the college readiness and life skills needed to succeed.

Chester County Futures celebrated many accomplishments this year, including local recognition of our work from the West Chester Public Library Heroes Award for our financial literacy program. Over 400 economically at-risk students participated in our programs in grades 6 – 12 in five school districts across the county. An additional 120 college students received vital scholarship support for their post-secondary education. The real story of Chester County Futures centers around our students; it is due to their hard work, determination and hope that we are able to share these successes: We proudly report a 100% graduation rate from high school for the Class of 2013,

with a 100% matriculation rate to college/post-secondary school. Our high school students participated in corporate site visits to SEI, SAP America, Siemens

Healthcare, DANSKO and Bentley Systems. A select group of our female students who are interested in technology were invited to attend the DigiGirlz Conference hosted by Microsoft.

In August, over 240 students actively engaged in our annual Futures College and Career EXPO, held at Lincoln University.

Our junior and senior classes attended college tours of Temple and Millersville Universities, and participated in a Shadow Day at West Chester University where they were matched with currently enrolled college students and followed their class schedule.

Our Futures AHEAD enrollment grew to include 6th grade in the Phoenixville, Kennett and Fugett Middle Schools.

We accomplish all that we do because of the encouragement we receive from our community. This report details the level of commitment you have made to our students. We are humbled by this support. We will continue to mindfully manage our resources to improve our programs and invest in our young people. Thank you for placing your trust in us. Sincerely,

James L. Coyne

Chairman of Board

Chester County Futures is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1996

which empowers motivated middle school and high school students of limited financial means with

the skills, resources, and experience needed to graduate high school, succeed in college —

and in life.

post-secondary degree in order to break out of the familial cycle of poverty and become meaningful

contributors to the communities in which they live.

During the 2012-13 school year, 81% of our middle and high school

lived in households earning less than $40,000 annually

with 24% living on less than $18,000 annually.

Our Programs

Futures AHEAD – The Middle School Program

Futures AHEAD was launched in 2011. This program is designed to provide early intervention to low-

income students to set them on the path toward higher education. Curriculum is grade-specific and

includes:

Familiarizing students with the concept of college

Exploring and planning in career and college readiness areas

Identifying and working toward filling gaps in knowledge and life skills

Educating students and parents on the importance of taking college track courses

Creating positive experiences around goal setting, personal development and confidence-building

Passport To College – The High School Program

This program is designed to equip and empower students to succeed in both high school and post-

secondary school in order to create for themselves fulfilling, self-sufficient adult lives. We do this by

providing grade-appropriate after-school academic enrichment classes and real world learning

opportunities. Curriculum includes activities and discussions on

topics, such as:

SAT preparation and test-taking skills

21st century workplace skills

Community volunteerism

College selection and application support

Financial aid application support

Laptop computers for 11th and 12th grade students

Scholarships – College Students

post-secondary scholarship funds.

Chester County Futures received the 2013 Financial Literacy Hero Award presented by the West

Chester Public Library. We instruct students on good fiscal management beginning in grade 6.

We received funding for an innovative pilot program, Project-Based Learning, for the 2013-14

school year. It is a hands-on, student-driven learning model that maximizes technology and 21st

century skill development. We are the first in the area to use this learning model in after-school

academic enrichment classes.

In addition to post-secondary site visits to Millersville University and Temple University, Chester

County Futures collaborated with West Chester University for our first “Student Shadow Day”.

Behind the Scenes

Chester County Futures expenses had a modest increase of 3.92% from Fiscal Year 2012 to Fiscal

Year 2013. Our Revenue and Support increased 61.73% within the same time period.

We are receiving unprecedented support from national corporations interested in supporting K-12

education, such as AT&T, Subaru of America, and ING Financial Services.

We rolled out a new, fresh Chester County Futures logo and website!
