About Townsville

Hospital Foundation

As Queensland’s largest regional Hospital, The Townsville Hospital serves a large geographical area, servicing communities from Papua New

Guinea, south to Mackay and west of Mt Isa.The Townsville Hospital Foundation is a hospital foundation established under the Hospital Foundations Act 1982 and governed by a board

of members appointed by the Governor in Council under section 20 of the Act.The board has the responsibility for governance, strategic planning, financial control and operational oversight of the Foundation. Nominations for membership are made by the Minister for Health, with members serving terms of office of up to five years. We believe that everyone deserves a healthy and happy life. Unfortunately many will experience injury, trauma and illness, some of which are life-threatening. Thankfully, The Townsville Hospital Foundation is here to help and support patients and their families during these times. The Townsville Hospital Foundation exists to advance and enrich health care in North Queensland. We do this with the support of the community who embraces our Foundation and donate generously. Since our inception in 1989 the Foundation has been the conduit of millions of dollars in financial support to The Townsville Hospital.Government funding to all hospitals in Queensland is generated towards infrastructure and capital works, core equipment and healthservices. There is often a short fall in funding to purchase ancillary equipment, as well as additional training and providing research toensure The Townsville Hospital remains at the forefront of patient care and remain on the leading edge of new technology and treatment methods.Funds raised by The Townsville Hospital Foundation are applied to purchase vital pieces of modern equipment, improve patient facilities,

provide additional training and education for our medical professionals and of course fund innovative research projects.

Our activities through the year have focused on supporting the Government’s objectives for the community, in particular the “Getting

Queensland Back on Track” pledges of improved infrastructure and revitalising front line services. This has been achieved by purchasing

modern medical equipment and our continuing role in supporting the major redevelopment of The Townsville Hospital.

To raise these funds, we rely heavily on the support of the community. It is through the generosity of many individuals, businesses and

community groups that we are able to assist the hospital in its patients care and lifesaving work.Foundation members have a broad range of experience, backgrounds and expertise and are drawn from health and medical professions as well as industry, commerce, university and the local community. The Foundation also provides an army of 150 selfless volunteers who generously donate their time across all areas of the hospital.

The Townsville Hospital Foundation is fully committed to improving the lives of local people, with 100 per cent of all funds raised, donated or

provided through sponsorship arrangements held locally for the benefit of our community. Both the Foundation members and our volunteer army serve in a voluntary capacity. They do not receive income, allowances or expenses.

A message from the Board

Chairman’s ReportIt is an honour for me to present the annual Chairman’s Report for the 2012 - 2013 financial year on behalf of the Townsville Hospital Foundation, an organisation which has a rich history and one that continues to make a difference in the North Queensland community.

The Foundation has achieved wonderful results through a dedicated team effort involving the Staff, Board, Volunteers, Partners and Supporters.

This has not only enabled us to increasingly fund our mission to “make a difference” throughout the Townsville Hospital and Health Services region and the local community but also allowed us to continue our aim to make a perpetual contribution to the people of the region and beyond.

I acknowledge the important contribution to these positive outcomes through the cooperation with the Townsville Hospital Foundation of the CEO of the Townsville Hospital Julia Squires and the Chair of the Townsville Hospital and Health Board John Bearne and his members. Their continued support of the Foundation is widely appreciated.

My colleagues and I on the Board are all volunteers and give our time and expertise to ensure the very best governance is applied in every aspect of the Foundation’s activities. The collective wisdom of the Board Members Professor Vic Callanan, Fay Barker, Professor Barbara Hayes, Kim Willoughby, John Bearne, Dominique Tim So and Denielle Pohlner is an invaluable resource.

I acknowledge the members of the Board who retired during the year, having served beyond their retirement dates pending new appointments being made. The valued and constructive service of Mr Errol Wenck, Ms Jennie Woodward and Mrs Louise Boyle are gratefully acknowledged and I thank them for their contributions to the success of the Foundation. I also make special mention of Deputy Chairman Prof. Vic Callanan who acted in my office in my absence from time to time during the year.Throughout the past 12 months the Foundation held regular Board meetings and according to business requirements held several special meetings to discuss Foundation activities, including matters of governance, strategic vision and planning, and policy.I also particularly thank outgoing General Manager of the Foundation Ms Meredith Elley. Meredith’s invaluable and dedicatedservice as General Manager to the Foundation for the duration of the year has only continued to strengthen the Foundation’sposition in the community and she was ably assisted by our other valued staff members, Andrea Mcleod, Sam Pascoe, Jessica Strutt and Andy Toulson. All of the staff, through their dedication to the Foundation and it’s objects, helped “Make a Difference” to the patients and their families, staff and visitors to the Hospital and to the allied health services in our community.

Page 7: Annual Report 2012/2013€¦ · The collective wisdom of the Board Members Professor Vic Callanan, Fay Barker, Professor Barbara Hayes, ... bring with them a positive energy which

The Foundation continues into the new financial year with a strategic aim of expanding its revenue base to support its activities for the benefit of the Townsville Hospital and the allied health services.

The local economic conditions impacting the Foundations fundraising have varied annually but have not deteriorated in this financial year which gives some optimism that improvement is a possibility. The Foundation adopts operational strategies to raise funds in a challenging charity environment. Support in other respects is improving and the Foundation is working on consolidating partnerships and finding new support. The 2012 -2013 year was focused on a comprehensive review of financial operations, policies and procedures, recording andreporting of the financial business and management of the Foundation operations. The audit of the Foundations accounts for the financial year have been completed.

Following a restructure across the past year, the Foundation looks ahead to an exciting time with a new management team, who bring with them a positive energy which radiates and nourishes the governance and operations of the Foundation.

I have no doubt that this positive energy will continue to be nurtured by the large number of donors and supporters who are our partners in our delivery of our vision of “making a difference”.

To all our stakeholders, on behalf of the Foundation, I say thank you. We could not have achieved these positive outcomes without you.

A Message from The Townsville Hospital Health Services

The inaugural Board of the Townsville Hospital Health Service has continued the strong relationship it has with the Townsville Hospital Foundation. We are very proud and appreciative of the fine work of the Foundation in

supplying special medical equipment, patient facilities and volunteer services to the hospital. The Foundation holds a unique place in the community through fundraising and patient services. With circa 150 volunteers and a small

dedicated workforce it continuous to engage the community on many fronts. The Townsville Hospital Board look forward to building on this strong relationship and seeing the Foundation being an integral part of the wider

community engagement policy of the hospital and surrounds.

Volunteer Services

The Foundation Volunteers continue to provide a number of valuable services to The Townsville Hospital. Throughout the past year we have recruited 50 new Volunteers.

Our “Vollies” meet, greet and guide with pride, operating the Foyer Information desk and Volunteer Hub that are manned between 8am - 4pm, Monday to Friday. From the moment patients and visitors enter The Townsville Hospital our trusty team is on hand to give directions, listen with a sympathetic ear and help those less mobile get to where they need to go.

The Volunteers willingly give their time to help provide support for patients and families in a number of wards throughout the Hospital, which include the Emergency Department, Neonatal Special Care Unit, Children’s Ward, Women & Children’s Clinics, Oncology and Aged Care.

Our volunteers provide a number of services to patients and visitors such as our Courtesy Buggy Drivers and our friendly “Trolley Vollies” who cater to the wards providing a full snack, beverage, magazine and newspaper service to patients, visitors and staff.

The Foundation Staff are actively looking for new areas within The Townsville Hospital to expand the Volunteer Services and have recently started an arts and crafts group and conversation groups in the Rehabilitation Ward which have been well received by both patients and staff. Our wonderful Volunteers help make it possible for us to achieve what we do and we are truly appreciative of each and every one of them.

The Townsville Hospital Foundation is committed to maintaining appropriate standards of conduct and has a Code of Conduct in place that all staff and volunteers are to abide by.Townsville Hospital Foundation 14Annual Report 2012/13
