Annual Report 2013-14
WelcomeEach year, we publish a report on all aspects of our school, from the finances and capital resources that sustain the business to a summary of student achievement
and plans for school improvement. It tells the story of our school and helps us determine whether we are truly living up to our Mission and meeting our Goals.
The year’s report is a snapshot of the school year 2013-2014, structured around the four building blocks of the school’s Plan and includes a detailed look at the
ways that ISB is supported by individuals, families and organisations.
communityBUILDING A
Celebrating our extraordinary international community.
CAMPUSBUILDING A
Transforming learning spaces for new kinds of learning.
LEAdershipBUILDING
Becoming a ‘leaderful’ schoolthat learns through feedback.

building learning
In 2014, we continued to collaborate with our external media team of designers and film makers to capture the story of learning at ISB. The project last several weeks and involved more than eighty members of faculty and staff, as well as
dozens of students from all over the Campus.
The result was a new series of films about the ISB learning experience structured around the 8 Human Commonalities that sit at the heart of the school’s learning programme – The Common Ground Curriculum.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination Results
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a course of study which is taken by students in their final two years of high school. It is an eclectic and in depth high school experience. Students choose six subjects each taken from a specific
subject area such as science, languages and humanities.
The International School of Brussels was among the first fifty schools in the world to offer the programme. The Diploma Programme has been an integral component of the life of ISB and shares much in common with the educational values of
ISB’s own Diploma programme and learner profile.

Arts
Athletics
Arts at ISB continues to offer ISB students a wealth of opportunities for success, both on Campus and in other settings. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their theatrical, musical, and aesthetic abilities through our regular series of events, including concerts, art shows, theatrical performances, and internationally organized events. The arts at ISB play an integral role in the lives of almost every
student at ISB.
At ISB, we believe that all students should understand the value of physical well-being and leave school ‘fit for life’. For many of our students, ISB athletics is an integral part of their education and an opportunity to mature physically, emotionally and socially.
* ‘Like schools’ are those with a similar ratio of English speaking background students to non-English speaking background students.

The Plan
New Jobs,New Learning
In response to the shifting nature of the world of work we will be offering
new learning for new jobs in new technologies.
UpdateAlready planned for 2015/16 and
2016/17 is the phased introduction of high level courses in computer science
and design technology.
•••
Languages for LifeWe plan a major transformation of our language programmes based on three connected initiatives: a
school-wide shift to a dual language approach, vacation language camps and a comprehensive mother-tongue
programme.
UpdateWe have implemented ‘vacation camps’ in English in association with BELL English and, in 2015,
will add vacation camps in French in partnership with CLL, the Belgium-based language specialists. We are
also offering earlier engagement with French in ES and ECC, and building up our Mother-Tongue Programme
•••
Leading the Learning Business
ISB will continue in its role as an international thought leader through its two global partnership projects, The Next Frontier: Inclusion and The
Common Ground Collaborative.
UpdateNFI is already a global project, working with over 100 schools. The Common Ground Collaborative (CGC) will be established as a registered, separate,
non-profit organization and will be co-led by Kevin Bartlett following his departure from ISB. Our school will,
in perpetuity, remain the ‘genesis school’ for the CGC and will enjoy special privileges within the global
Collaborative.
A Leader for ISBWe will choose a new ISB Director with the conceptual understanding,
competencies and character necessary to lead ISB confidently to
the next level in its evolution.
UpdateIn February, 2014, The Board of
Trustees announced Mr. Lee Fertig as the new ISB Director, beginning July 2015. A comprehensive Transition Plan is already well under way to ensure a seamless handover from
Kevin Bartlett to Lee Fertig.
•••
Student Leadersof Tomorrow
We will build the future leadership capacity of our students by providing multiple opportunities for them to lead
today.
UpdateWe are creating multiple opportunities for student leadership and innovation, including the recent Big Day Out in
Brussels and Think Big events.
•••
Teacher LeadersDriving Change
We know that schools only improve with the committed energies and skills
of multiple leaders throughout the organization. We are offering high-level
leadership training for our faculty together with multiple, innovative
opportunities for teacher leadership.
UpdateTeacher-Leaders are now trained for the role and are increasingly actively
engaged in change management throughout the school.
Securing our HomeOur lead goal is to do everything we can to buy Kattenberg 19, the land on which ISB stands. This will be a momentous, historic achievement.
UpdateThe Board has modified this plan for strategic reasons, seeing it as more
advantageous to the parent community to negotiate an extended lease on
favourable terms, preserving capital for investment in the quality of learning
and facilities for current and future students. A lease renewal proposal has been submitted and is under
consideration by the owners of the campus.
•••
Solving the Parking ProblemWe will reduce the stresses and
strains of mobility by building well-designed underground parking
facilities.
UpdateFollowing carefully gathered feedback from parents and other stakeholders, the Board has modified this strategy.
Rather than investing capital in parking facilities, the Board has established a multi-stakeholder working party to
develop, pilot and implement a series of smaller, incremental measures designed to steadily manage the parking issues towards a solution without a sudden, difficult impact
on any stakeholder group within our community.
•••
Creating the Chateau CommonsThe Chateau car park will be replaced
by a green space enhancing the beauty of the Chateau de Fougères and providing a new space for the
community to come together.
UpdateThis goal may be affected by the
approaches immediately above, so is currently on hold.
•••
Transforming Elementary Education
Building on the success of our High School, we will begin to plan for a
transformative new Elementary School building.
UpdateWe are working to a full 10-Year Plan,
including (towards the end of this plan) the construction of a new Elementary School. In the meantime, The Board
has approved the completion of the re-structuring of the ES interior, following
the pattern of the improvements already accomplished, which have
had such a positive impact on the ES learning environment.
CommunityLearning Institutes
We will continue to expand opportunities for students, teachers
and parents to learn real world skills at shared events.
Updatehese community learning events, such as the Big Day Out in Brussels, Think Big, Student Professional Learning
Institutes, are now becoming a regular feature of learning at ISB.
•••
Mother-TongueLanguage Programmes
We will better support each language community by providing learning in every student’s ‘home language’.
UpdateAs mentioned above, our partnership with CLL is proving very productive. In 2015 we will be adding after-school programmes in Spanish and Arabic,
with more to follow.
•••
Leaving ISBWe will better support our departing
community members as well as we do when they arrive.
UpdateThe ISB Foundation and the Family Association, together with our own
Admissions and Advancement Team, are working on a series of connected strategies around the theme of ‘every
departure an arrival’ to make sure that, whenever students and their families leave ISB, everyone still feels part of
the permanent ISB global community.
•••
Completing our CommunityWe will add a crèche for our youngest
community members and expanded afterschool care.
UpdateThe ISB Creche, offered in partnership
with Zein Childcare, opened in January 2015 and is already seen as a welcome addition to ISB’s suite of
services.

building a campus
Great learning demands great learning spaces, designed to match the vision for learning, teaching and assessing expressed in the Common Ground Curriculum, designed and implemented at ISB. As implementation proceeds, we are building brilliant learning environments based on the principles of flexibility, visibility and community. Each building is an integral element in a coherent and
comprehensive plan to create a “common ground campus”, shaped by our vision for learning and community. All of this work is framed by the stunning setting of Kattenberg 19, where we protect our historic buildings and precious forest.
The Common Ground Campus project is designed to ensure that the school’s physical environment supports all aspects of life and learning at ISB. During the school year 2013-2014, the following major improvements were made across the campus.
Campus Renovations 2013-2014
Annual Report 2013-14
Our Green Agenda
1. Environmental Responsibility
It is our shared commitment, as clearly expressed in our Curriculum, to learn, teach and model environmental responsibility as a core value at ISB.
2. Learning as the Primary Driver
The key to responsible behaviour is to recognize that this is learned behaviour. Our collective responsibility is to ensure that this is learned here, at ISB. We work towards this goal through direct study of relevant issues and through the integration of sustainability principles
throughout the curriculum.
3. Exemplars as a Key Learning Strategy
We support the embedded learning of environmental responsibility by providing exemplars of desired behaviours. This means that we practice what we preach in all aspects of life and work at ISB.
4. All Stakeholders need to Share the Impact of Taking Responsibility
Being more “green” tends to mean changes to our patterns of behaviour. Those can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. We believe it is important to make sure that any inconvenience is shared across stakeholder groups. For example, if we reduce parking spaces on campus
it is important that the various groups of vehicle users share the impact and that any criteria used are fair, reasonable and transparent.
External Recognition of our Green Agenda
During the school year 2013-2014, the Brussels Institute of Environment renewed ISB’s second eco-star for the next three years. The was first awarded one star in 2001, finally earning its second in 2007. The two stars put ISB in the category of Eco-dynamic Enterprises of
Brussels. Continued actions are required by the school in order to maintain this prestigious award.
Annual Report 2013-14
building a community
One of the most striking features of ISB is the extraordinary sense of community and the welcome it offers to families from countries all around the globe. We celebrate this diversity and the opportunities for learning that it brings.

Annual Report 2013-14
Our Teachers
We know from experience and research that the quality of teaching is directly linked to student achievement. Drawn from all over the world, we are proud of each one of the teachers that bring passion, professionalism, and a strong commitment to ensuring that every one of our
students are included, challenged, and successful every day at ISB.
Facts and figures about the people who make ISB what it is today
In 1995, the ISB Foundation set aside funds for the purpose of making annual awards to members of the ISB Faculty in recognition of their extraordinary dedication and commitment to the school. The award was named after James Sidgwick, who served as Deputy Headmaster (1956-69) as well as Headmaster of the Elementary School (1969-88). Each year, a recipient is selected by the Alumni from a different
division or section of the school. We are delighted to announce that Kimete Basha and Bart Danaerts were this year’s joint winners.
Kimete Basha is currently Head of the Middle and High School Library but began her career at the school in 1989 as Middle School teacher of Social Studies.
Kimete reflected on what the award meant to her:
“I am not sure if it is possible to express the pride and joy I felt when Mike Crowley announced that, together with my wonderful friend Bart Dankaerts, I had been awarded the Jim Sidgwick Award this year.
The award is significant because it is connected with an educator I respected and admired. Jim welcomed my daughter Sarah into the safe and welcoming environment he had created in the Elementary School when she was only 2 1/2 years old. He cared for her well-being as
he cared for that of every single child who had the good fortune to find their way into his school.
The award is particularly meaningful to me, however, because it is decided by students. So many of them have crossed my path over the years; so many of them have touched my heart with their affection and kindness, and all of them have reminded me, over and over again,
how lucky I am to have chosen the profession I did, and to have had the privilege of practicing it at ISB.
I accept the award humbly even if I am absolutely thrilled that I join a club that includes James Bell, Angela Purcell, Renee Frankard, Laura Boucher, Bart Dankaerts and James Lehmann: all colleagues and friends I esteem and admire. I am in privileged company. It means a great
deal to me to be considered as highly as they are.
Please thank the students who remembered me in this marvelous way. Tell them that I am very proud to have been a part of their world and that they remain a part of mine”
“Her dedication, her devotion, her commitment her elegance with dealing the teenagers - are the best reasons for her nomination for the award.”
(ISB Alumnus)
Annual Report 2013-14
Bart Dankaerts was a Middle School Social Studies teacher for 20 years between 1989 and 2009. He now works at The American School in the Hague.
Bart reflected on what the award meant to him:
“Receiving an award is always an honor, but knowing that this one comes from the students I once had the privilege of teaching makes it extra special and one that I will cherish forever. I have spent some of the best years of my life at ISB and I was fortunate to meet so many wonderful people there, including Jim Sidgwick. I will always remember him as a man who was passionate about education and about ISB:
a great role model and an inspiration to all of us who have known him.
ISB truly is a special place, and being there on Friday felt very much like “coming home”. It is the feeling of family and belonging, between the faculty, staff, parents and students that makes the ISB experience a unique experience. I feel blessed to have been part of this family for
20 years and am very grateful to the colleagues, parents and students for so many unforgettable memories.
Another thing that makes ISB a special place is the spirit of opportunity and the “let’s see how we can make this work” attitude that is adopted by all. I am very grateful for the many chances I received to try out new things as well as for the support and the encouragements I have always received along the way. There are many fond memories of Loire Valley Field Trips, Talent Shows, Saturnalia Festivals, mini Olympics, MUN conferences, Greece/Italy/Kiev trips and so much more. Whether in the classroom, on the stage or on the sports field, the
ISB motto is always: “Aim high, work hard and enjoy the journey.”
“Bart was a very gifted teacher who taught my daughter. She loved her class with Bart and really became engaged with history and learning about it. He brought a tremendous amount of passion to this class and it rubbed off on his students. His
proficiency in 7 languages was an amazing thing to watch in action. A great teacher with a lot of heart.”

Our Family Association
The Mission of the ISB Family Association is to build a well-informed school community where all families are welcome, all families are encouraged to participate, and all nationalities are celebrated. Without the continued support and generosity of the many volunteers who
work tirelessly on numerous events and community initiatives, our school simply would not be the place it is today.

supporting isb
ISB is a non-profit school dedicated to its Mission and vision: an inclusive community where all are challenged and find their own success; a school that develops Independent learners and International Citizens on a Campus in which all buildings, grounds and
services reflect our beliefs and values. This vision is simple but ambitious. It is also real, and requires realistic financial support.
So how do we achieve it? The answer is through many years of sound governance and careful financial management, steadily building the reserves we need to achieve our long term goals. In recent years, it has become apparent to us that, to complement these reserves
and achieve our goals, we will increasingly reply upon gifts to our Annual Fund and a capital fundraising programme.
Summary of Enrolment 2013-2014Enrolment remained strong during the 2013-2014 school year.
A total of 1563 students passed through the school during the course of the year.
*Note that student enrolment here represents the number of students attending and known to be attending ISB on September 15th each year.

** The ISB Assisted Places Programme is a means-tested system of financial assistance whereby tuition fees are reduced by a certain percentage (not exceeding 50%) each year. The programme is designed to support: 1) Families with children already at ISB who experience an unforeseen significant change of financial circumstances, resulting in the inability to meet the full costs of tuition; 2) families applying to ISB for the first time, who fulfil strictly applied criteria. Further details of the Programme are available on the school
