Healthy Beginnings Annual Report for '13-'14

TRANSCRIPT

Page 1: Annual report 2013 14 vs final

Who would have thought that back

in 1994, when 3 community members came

together to develop a new initiative to

screen children for unidentified health and

development concerns, that 20 years later

Healthy Beginnings would still be moving

forward and serving children throughout

Central Oregon?

In the past 20 years Healthy Beginnings

has provided services to over 9,000 children.

The program has expanded services from

just Deschutes County to include Jefferson

and Crook counties. To many families, HB

has become the identified first step to

services for young children. HB has forged

partnerships with collaborating agencies and

media, helping us reach even more children

and families while expanding our volunteer

and donor base.

In the coming years HB envisions

working more effectively with pre-

schools while providing parents and

caregivers the information and

education to help ensure their child

enters kindergarten with the right

foundation to succeed. HB will build

on the program’s efforts to provide

literacy education while providing a

strong platform for families to be

secure in the knowledge that their

children are ready for kindergarten.

Partnership and innovation continue

to be central to our service with the

hope that every child will receive a

healthy beginning!

20 YEARS AND COUNTING

Imagine taking your child to a preschool or daycare

that not only offers a healthy environment for your

child, but also cares about the future health of your

child. Imagine having access to professional health

assessment of your child’s vision, hearing,

development and behavior…all through the

convenience of their preschool or daycare.

Launched in August 2014, Healthy Beginnings is

beginning to partner with local preschools and

daycares bringing them a custom health—and—

development team of experts to children under 5

years of age. Focusing primarily on 4 essential health

areas: Vision, Hearing, Behavior and Development, we are calling this program 4 b4 5.

Children 5 years of age and younger, whose parents have given Healthy Beginnings

permission to screen their child, will be assessed in vision, hearing, behavior and

development. Healthy Beginnings will follow up with each of the parents with these

assessments. In addition, Healthy Beginnings will also encourage parents to schedule

their child to attend one of our complete health and development screenings that are

scheduled throughout Central Oregon 18 times per year. 4 b4 5s are a wonderful

introduction to the importance of health and developmental screenings and may help us

connect even more children with needed services.

This is a real benefit to local preschools, the children who attend as well as the families

that may not have the time to get their children health screened due to busy schedules.

Preschools and daycares can contact Healthy Beginnings at 541-383-6357 to schedule

our team of experts to screen the children who attend their schools.

Volunteer Support Helps HB Build

Capacity and Reach More Children

Healthy Beginnings’ volunteers make a difference every day. At

our screenings they provide an amazing amount of support, helping parents

and young children have a better tomorrow. But this is not the only way

that they make an impact. You will see our volunteers providing outreach,

helping in the office with administrative work, or using their contacts to

network and fundraise for the program, as well as in countless other ways—

all of which help HB leverage resources to better connect with families and

reach more children. Volunteers have a special spark and passion for the

program that makes them fantastic ambassadors in the community. Their

enthusiasm for serving young children and families is immense and it shows

in the work they do.

Just one example of this drive and passion is Kerry Zenich, RN, our

2014 Volunteer of the Year. Kerry is pictured here assessing a young boy at

the Health station but she doesn’t stop there. She also assists with outreach

events, networking and community engagement. She is always willing to lend a hand and do whatever is needed to help

promote HB’s mission. She is wonderful and we are so proud to call her, and ALL our volunteers, our partner.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2012, one in four adults volunteered through an organization, demonstrating that volunteering remains an important activity for

millions of Americans. Altogether, 64.5 million Americans volunteered nearly 7.9 billion hours last year. The estimated value of this

volunteer service is nearly $175 billion.

Volunteering has trended upward among Generation Xers (born between 1965 and 1981) over the past eleven years, increasing

nearly 5.5 percentage points during that period.

Volunteers are almost twice as likely to donate to charity as non-volunteers. Eight in 10 volunteers donated to charity, compared

to four in 10 for individuals who do not volunteer.

HEAR, HEAR! SPEECH AND HEARING DELAYS ARE DETECTED.

Healthy Beginnings’ Mission: Providing access to health,

education, and behavior services for young children and their families.

Our work fosters healthy nurtured children, families and communities

by bringing accessible physical, developmental and behavioral screenings

to children from birth through age five ensuring that young children are

able to enter Kindergarten ready to succeed.

Healthy Beginnings provides community based screening clinics,

referrals to appropriate community agencies, follow-up services, and

parent education as well as screenings to preschools. Supported by

community donations and volunteers, the program offers a service un-

duplicated in our region with no eligibility requirements.

We invite you to tour a screening and see first hand the value a

screening can provide a young child and family. Once you see our

program in action, you may see yourself involved—either as a volun-

teer, a community supporter or even a Board Member.

We invite you to get involved, learn more, tour a screening, volunteer, donate,

change the life of a local child.

progress at:

Because Every Child Deserves

a Healthy Beginning...

A young mom and her two children, Isaac (20 months) and Iris (7 months), both

content riding side by side in their stroller, were beginning their 12 point screening at the hearing station. After talking with their mother, we learned that Isaac was

not speaking yet. She had taken both kids to a Healthy Beginnings screening earlier and found that Isaac did not pass the hearing test. As the screening was

not conclusive at the time, HB staff encouraged her to return for a follow—up screening.

During the hearing test, Isaac, held in his mother’s arms, was so patient as our

volunteer expert positioned the OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) tester just right...results: The OAE read, once again, “refer” which indicated that Isaac may

indeed have a hearing concern.

What is more, Isaac’s speech delay may be due to his hearing loss…., and with

Healthy Beginning’s referral to a local hearing specialist, Isaac will get the proper

treatment for his hearing which, in turn, will allow Isaac to catch up quickly with

his speech and development. As with all children receiving a referral, HB will

continue to monitor Isaac and his progress and provide support as Isaac receives

needed services.
