supports the QUALITY OF EDUCATION at Sarah Smith through strategic investments in curriculum and instructional programs that directly enhance the school’s mission of academic excellence for all Sarah Smith students. We accomplish this by providing funding in three areas:

The Sarah Smith Education FoundationSSEF

Dear Sarah Smith Community,

In my first year as principal, I have witnessed the incredible support this school receives from our

committed parents and talented staff members. The Sarah Smith Education Foundation’s impact is

beyond measure. The monetary support from the SSEF allows the school to have resources that

would otherwise not be possible. Most importantly, the Foundation's daily leadership, guidance and

encouragement continually make Sarah Smith the best school in Atlanta Public Schools.

The generous financial support of the Sarah Smith community, through donations to the Sarah Smith

Education Foundation, allows educators to offer the world-class education we have come to expect

for our children. Donor contributions help fund 65% of the entire curriculum budget. This annual

report details the programs and initiatives funded by your donations to the SSEF. I hope you will

be as proud as I am of the incredible opportunities your contributions provide for our children.

It couldn’t happen without you!

On behalf of Sarah Smith Elementary school staff, thank you for your generous support of the SSEF.

ACADEMICASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Education Foundation is the thing that sets Sarah Smith apart from other

schools. It gives the administration the unique ability to direct funds specifically to

curriculum based initiatives. This is not the norm among public schools, and we are

so fortunate to have this amazing opportunity. I encourage everyone to get

involved, learn more, and donate to the SSEF.” Tracy NobleSarah Smith Parent

In the 2013-2014 school year, Sarah Smith launched the inaugural Academic Assistance Program. For Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, this program provided three certified and experienced teachers from the Education Assistance Foundation (EAF) to assist students two days a week with phonics and reading comprehension. Standardized tests, along with teachers’ input, identified students who would benefit from participating in the program. Nearly 60 students participated and benefited from this exceptional program last year. Tim Ovbey, 2nd grade teacher, commented, "The Academic Assistance Program is such an incredible resource for the teachers, students and parents at Sarah Smith. It providesadditional instruction time for the children in the program. It also gives me moreopportunities to provide differentiated learning with my other students.”

To enhance the academic experience and address the needs of students in 3rd-5th grades, an afterschool program was set up through Child First USA. College students from around the Atlanta area provided mentoring and academic services to approximately 30 students for an hour and a half, 3 days a week.

Given the program’s tremendous success, we are pleased to announce that starting this fall, the SSEF will now fund the expansion of the Academic Assistance Program to include 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Julie Lee, past PTA President, commented on the program: “Teachers and administrators are continually looking for ways to meet the needs of the students and families of SRS. Thanks to the Foundation, Sarah Smith is able to double the number of students serviced through the in-school Academic Assistance Program for the 2014/2015 school year.”

The EAF in-school program will now be offered for all grades at Sarah Smith (K-5) providing a total of six teachers. There will be three teachers at the primary campus and three at the intermediate campus. The afterschool program will continue as well bringing the number of students participating in these programs to approximately 150.

Sarah Smith Elementary was first awarded International Baccalaureate (IB) status in 2006. IB is an inquiry-based program that encourages students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens. Sarah Smith is one of only a handful of elementary schools in the City of Atlanta, public or private, that offers the IB World School Primary Years Program (PYP).

Every five years, Sarah Smith is reevaluated to help improve the implementation of the IB Program. This year, Sarah Smith will be reevaluated for two days in September at both campuses. This reevaluation ensures that the prestigious IB World School Primary Years Program is fully incorporated into the schools’ curriculum and prepares our students for success in a global society. “We need the financial support of the SSEF to maintain and continue the IB World Program at Sarah Smith,” explains Ms. Karla Cravey, IB Coordinator at Sarah Smith. With the reevaluation taking place this year, the funds provided by the SSEF are critically important. To ensure we maintain IB accreditation, the Sarah Smith Education Foundation funds support the following:

The 5th grade Exhibition culminates the last six years of the IB World School Primary Years Program with a grade level project. The project is action based on student inquiry and social community issues. In the past, the 5th graders have focused on several key social issues from starvation, recycling to education. The SSEF funds all the materials for the 5th grade Exhibition, allowing this special project to take place.

Ms. Terry Abromitis, a 5th grade teacher who recently attended an IB training program in Orlando, Florida stated that “The Sarah Smith Education Foundation allows teachers to go through in-depth training to further support the IB Curriculum and maintain our IB status.”

With the reevaluation of the IB World School Primary Years Program taking place this fall, Sarah Smith is extraordinarily grateful for the generous donations of the SSEF, allowing this program to continue and thrive.

Sarah Smith teachers and faculty identified an opportunity to improve math instruction for all Sarah Smith students. This year, action is being taken to introduce a new program for K-5 that will provide online math practice for students, drive instruction in the classroom and track results for each individual student. The Sarah Smith Education Foundation will fund this new program for students and teachers in 2014-2015.

“We have been so very fortunate to have such stellar supplemental online math practice, tracking, and assessment tools like First in Math, SumDog, and IXL afforded to us by the SSEF. This year we are excited to embark on a new program with Accelerated Math (AM), which, like STAR Math, STAR Reading, and Accelerated Reader (AR), will help to drive our differentiation and instruction with quality common data and rigorous skills practice for every student,” explains Mr. Bejay Osby, a 4th grade teacher and Advanced Math Coordinator at Sarah Smith.

The SSEF funds continue to meet the needs of our students and teachers with the introduction of Accelerated Math (AM) in 2014.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW

In the 2013-2014 school year, the Sarah Smith Education Foundation provided

more than $201,000 worth of curriculum related items, technology, classroom

equipment and professional development opportunities for our teachers. We

have budgeted to spend $264,550 in the 2014-2015 school year.

With the generous support of many parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and

community partners, we raised $293,000 in the 2013-2014 school year. Our

goal this year is to raise an equal amount in order to cover our curriculum

expense budget and avoid drawing on our reserves. We hope you will join us

in reaching our goal and help us fund the curriculum and training programs

that create the successful learning environment that is unique to Sarah Smith.

The SSEF is committed to its mission – supporting the quality of education at

Sarah Smith through strategic investments in curriculum and instructional

programs that directly enhance the school’s mission of academic excellence

for all Sarah Smith students.
