Mission Statement:Inspired by the life of Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis,

Morven Park preserves and advances the ideals of civic responsibility, sustainable agriculture, and enhancement

of life in rural Virginia.

About Us

Westmoreland Davis Memorial Foundation, Inc. 1

Overall attendance in 2013 was up 26 percent over 2012, attributable

to the opening of our athletic fields and a 28 percent increase in

the number of people touring our museums.

The volunteer-led Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and Morven Park announced a new partnership in 2013; under the general oversight of

Morven Park staff, LWC’s role is to create and manage a public trail system and develop environmental education programs at Morven Park, and in return Morven Park is providing office, meeting, and classroom space for

LWC’s public programs.

Dear Friends Dear Friends of Morven Park:

Last year, we asked you to help us “start something big”; to contribute to the transformation of Morven Park into a multi-faceted community activity zone. You responded, and the momentum you helped us build continues to soar.

This 2013 Annual Report highlights many of the developments that made the year such a momentous one. You will read about record-breaking attendance, the launch of our new civics leadership program, and the birth of a strategic partnership with one of the most active and effective volunteer organizations in the region. And let’s not forget the arrival of the pardoned presidential turkeys!

One of the more tangible expressions of our developing momentum was the 2013 commitment by the Board of Trustees to begin the campaign for the Equestrian Center renovation and expansion. The planning and pre-construction engineering work completed last year allows us to break ground on Phase I of this project by early fall 2014, beginning with construction of four new outdoor equestrian arenas and a viewing berm.

But none of these and many other accomplishments would be possible without you, our friends and supporters. Our generous donors enable Morven Park to become the community resource it aspires to be. We have much more work ahead of us before the strategic plan and master site plan are completely realized, but the pace we have set – thanks to the support of our friends – makes us increasingly optimistic about the future of this marvelous place.

We hope you will take the time to read more within these pages about the exciting developments at Morven Park and that they will inspire you to attend our programs, take a tour, hike our trails, and consider making this historic site a part of your annual philanthropic giving.

Sincerely,

James H. Harris Frank MilliganPresident, Board of Trustees Executive Director

Farming returned to Morven Park in 2013, with two separate crop areas planted by local aspiring farmers. A 14-acre plot was seeded with small grains that will be sold by the farmers to area bakeries, distilleries, and breweries. A half-acre plot was planted by a husband and wife team with garlic varieties to supply to local restaurants. Morven Park’s goal is to reduce risks to beginning farmers by giving them the opportunity to hone their techniques and test their products’ market.

My Morven Park: Maureen Kane[Editor’s Note: With some help from relatives, Maureen Kane and husband José Nolasco of Sterling, Va., planted half an acre of garlic at Morven Park last fall. For a nominal land lease fee, the couple is participating in Morven Park’s new incubator farming program, which provides aspiring farmers with land to build farming skills and test the market before purchasing their own land.]

I remember wanting to be a farmer since I was in kindergarten. As a child, I always drew pictures of myself as a farmer. As I was growing up, I grew all sorts of things at home in a little space on the side of the house. I ended up taking a more normal career path and became a teacher. But I never gave up the dream despite living in a townhouse, and not long ago started reading about niche farmers who were able to sustain themselves on very small acreage. I thought about raising alpacas, and considered making cheese. But then I read about garlic and had an “ah-ha” moment. About that same time, I saw a newspaper article about some guys who were plant-ing grains at Morven Park, and I contacted [Executive Director] Mr. [Frank] Milligan.

We were accepted into the program and started planting in November. My husband, who works in DC, is from rural San Salvador, where his brother still plows his fields walking behind an ox! His cousins have helped out, including preparing the garlic to plant. The cloves can’t be separated from the garlic head more than 48 hours before planting, so it all had to be done at once. We were all sitting around with the white garlic paper up to our knees!

We put in 450 pounds of 20 different gour-met varieties on half an acre and planted the other half acre in clover to enrich the soil. Next year, we’ll flip it. My 4-year-old son, Javier, is almost always here with me. It’s been a great adventure for him. He builds castles and little houses for all the animals.

Each time I come out to check on the plants, all I want to do is lie down in the middle of the field and take it all in. I can't feel more thankful for the success of the crop thus far. I almost feel like a parent awaiting the birth of a child.

Morven Park has offered us an opportunity to realize a dream that we believed was impossible. Morven Park has drastically altered our family's quality of life. I've been able to spend my days surrounded by beautiful landscapes and genuinely friendly people doing something I love. I am home for my children and never complain to José about work. We have Morven Park to thank.

In July, Carriage Fest welcomed 30 carriage driving competitors and more than 500 spectators for a day devoted to horse-drawn vehicles, complete with free tours of the Winmill Carriage Museum.

My Morven Park: Lara MajorLoudoun Hunt Pony Club was founded at Morven Park in 1958. My daughter, Ally, is a member of this local chapter of the United States Pony Club, an organization that develops leadership and horsemanship skills among young equestrians. My older daughter also was a member.

Ally also plays travel soccer, and I am the assistant coach. We have rented Morven Park’s athletic fields for camps and for scrimmages, and it has been great to have a place to play on regulation-sized fields that are so beautifully maintained. There is definitely a shortage of nice fields in the area.

This year, we have 44 active members in Pony Club, ranging from ages 6 to 25. We feel incredibly fortunate to be able to use Morven Park facilities for riding lessons, camps and competitions. Unfortunately, with continued development in the county, it gets harder and harder to find places to ride and for kids to learn horsemanship.

In the end, that means fewer people in our community with an appreciation for open space and the environment because children in Pony Club are raised with a sense of stewardship for the land. The United States Pony Club requires its leaders to educate their young members about land preservation and access to land for horses.

Our members volunteer every year to clean up and safely maintain the land used at Morven Park for horse trials. It’s quite a sight on clean-up days to see kids dragging brush, picking up rocks and painting cross-country jumps.

By providing a place for our Pony Club to operate, not only is Morven Park helping us raise a generation with a strong sense of civic duty, but it’s allowing us to maintain the equestrian heritage that is a part of Leesburg’s identity, something that I have taken pride in all of my life.

Visit Loudoun, the destination marketing bureau for Loudoun County, awarded Morven Park two grants in 2013. One provided funds to market our Carriage Fest weekend, targeting participants as well as spectators to this first-time event.

The second Visit Loudoun grant matched funds provided by a grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation plus funds from Morven Park, Oatlands Historic House & Gardens, the George C. Marshall House, and Comfort Suites/Leesburg to promote the three historic homes of Loudoun County. The “Loudoun Historic Homes” campaign began in November 2013 and runs through July 2014 with a goal of increasing tourism at the three sites in particular and Loudoun County in general. The combined funds went toward newspaper, magazine, radio, and online advertising.

The Virginia Horse Industry Board voiced its support for our campaign to restore and expand the Equestrian Center, providing funds for advertising and for production of printed campaign materials. The campaign’s goals are to increase corporate and individual funding of the renovation project and to increase awareness of horse show organizers and participants about the planned improvements.

Morven Park requested and received funding from Captain Planet Foundation to purchase hand tools, wheelbarrows, gloves, and other equipment for its Student Citizenship Project. This pilot program, which launched in November and continued throughout the spring of 2014, is a partnership between Morven Park and the Loudoun County Public Schools to supplement the 8th grade in-class civics curriculum. About 130 students have used the tools and equipment in their service-learning projects at Morven Park, growing healthy foods to donate to a local food bank and building a one-mile hiking trail for public use.

Morven Park began work on a new website in 2013 (which launched in January 2014), thanks in part to a grant from the Digital Community Foundation. The new site better reflects the organization’s current messages and personality, offers users easier navigation, and provides staff with enhanced ability to update graphics, text, and interactive forms.

My Morven Park: Rick Tracy[Editor’s Note: Rick and Tracey Tracy have lived next to the Morven Park equestrian center for the past nine years. Rick currently serves on the CivicsNOW! Advisory Committee and was a member of the Board of Trustees for Loudoun Therapeutic Riding. The Tracys also support Morven Park through annual fund donations and through Rick’s frequent Tweets about the site.]

We moved to Tutt Lane in August 2005 and definitely considered the proximity to Morven Park as a benefit … actually a selling point. Besides the beautiful property and historic significance of Morven Park, we get the benefit of the great views without having to cut all of the grass!

We actually do consider Morven Park to be a neighbor in the traditional sense – a very conscientious and accommodating neighbor. My favorite thing about the property is its understated brilliance. The first time someone sees the Mansion it blows them off the back of their chair. They aren't expecting to see something quite so opulent as they wind their way down the long driveway.

One particular image that sticks with me occurred during a civics event reception on the Mansion

portico last summer, just as the sun was going down. The view of the expansive property that evening was incredibly special.

The reason I started Tweeting about Morven Park was that I just want to help spread the word about this fantastic facility. There are so many layers: from the equestrian facilities, to the new hiking trails, sports fields, the CivicsNOW! program, Civil War exhibits, and the Mansion with its incredible antiques from around the world. I appreciate this local resource that has so much to offer from cultural, educational, historical, recreational, and sporting perspectives.

As the home of Governor Westmoreland Davis, Morven Park also has significance that reaches beyond Leesburg and Loudoun County. I think most people would find many areas of interest if they took time to visit.

President Obama’s staff and the National Turkey Federation selected Morven Park to receive the pardoned presidential turkey, “Popcorn,” and his alternate, “Caramel,” following the Thanksgiving ceremony at the White House. The turkeys joined heritage bronze turkey “Franklin” in the poultry yard at Morven Park’s Turkey Hill Farm.

My Morven Park: Joyce MillerMy husband, Travis, and I had just started making and selling our hickory syrup when we were invited to have a vendor table at a Morven Park event three years ago. That was the first time we had been asked to be part of a “show” and the beginning of a relationship that has just continued to grow!

When we first started our Wildwoods Hickory Syrup venture, we only sold it at two farmers’ markets. Then we met some of the Morven Park staff at a local event, and they became part of the growing audience who had begun to notice the uniqueness of our product. And the rest is … you know … history!

Travis worked in retail management for 30 years, and I held a variety of jobs before we started a family and I stayed home to be with the kids. But we were always doing something in addition to Travis’s steady job. We cut and sold fire wood, built a few houses, mowed lawns, grew Christmas trees, even cleaned houses and

picked up trash and hauled it to the landfill for people. There really isn’t much we haven’t done.

After the kids went to school and were on their own, Travis had retired but was working for a reclaimed lumber business for extra income. He got the idea of making syrup from hickory bark, and we started selling it at the farmers markets. Today, we forage for bark from shagbark hickories, which shed their bark naturally, and also get it from family and friends. A local business that supplies hickory to barbecue restaurants started giving us bark because the restaurants won’t take it.

Today, our Wildwoods Hickory Syrup can befound not only in Morven Park’s gift shop, but at

wineries, food markets, museums, and various farmers markets, and several restaurants have become regular customers.

The syrup business has taken on a life of its own, and is now our livelihood. We’ve never had to market our product, and yet we’ve been featured in the Washington Post, Wine Spectator Magazine, Edible Blue Ridge, and more recently in the United Airlines in-flight magazine. We will also be featured in an upcoming online food blog with CNN. And it’s thanks to people who supported us from the beginning, like those at Morven Park.

We look forward to making deliveries to Morven Park. They always treat us like family. Besides being a part of our business’s early growth, Morven Park affected us in a way we never expected. They’re totally committed to preserving the past, and it’s because of their passion for history that we’ve become more connected to our own family’s history.

In 2013, Morven Park installed the first section of the new Governor’s Walk,

which when completed will connect the main visitor parking lot, the formal gardens, Davis

Mansion, Winmill Carriage Museum, and Turkey Hill Farm. The section from the Mansion driveway to the

Coach House administration building was completed in late fall. The exposed aggregate material provides a cleaner, more stroller-

and wheelchair-friendly passageway than the gravel surface it replaced.

Morven Park Launches CivicsNOW!

Westmoreland Davis Memorial Foundation, Inc. 15

In an era of increasingly divisive public debate, educators are appealing to non-traditional centers of learning, like historic sites, to help teach civic engagement skills as a path toward restoring our democracy. Designed by accredited educators, Morven Park’s CivicsNOW! program launched in 2013 in response to that appeal.

This innovative program builds upon the legacy of former Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis, who modeled for rural Virginians the skills essential for practicing effective citizenship. Reaching residents of Loudoun County, Northern Virginia and beyond, CivicsNOW! targets students and teachers, with select events open to the public. The program promotes measurable academic achievement, provides instructional content for teachers, and creates new forums of engagement for adults.

James G. Harris, left, president of the Westmoreland Davis Memorial Foundation Board of Trustees, and civics scholar Peter Levine, the first presenter in Morven Park’s new Distinguished Voices in Civics program.

CivicsNOW! began in spring 2013 with a Local Leaders speakers’ series and culminated in September with the first Distinguished Voices in Civics event, featuring civics scholar and activist Peter Levine. During that event, Morven Park presented the inaugural Governor Westmoreland Davis Civic Leadership Award to retiring Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Edgar B. Hatrick III.

The inaugural year of CivicsNOW! also included the training of 30 volunteer mentors, recruited from non-profit, corporate and government organizations to assist with the pilot of our new Student Citizenship Project, a partnership with Loudoun County Public Schools. The project supplements the in-class 8th grade civics curriculum and continued throughout the 2013-2014 school year.
