    ABOUT THE REPORT:

Orphan support program is one of the important features of KDF and the organization isworking on extending support to orphans for past well over six years in the country. Thereport in hand is just a roving view of how the organization had spent 2013 working onthe program.

    ORPHANS & SOCIETY:

In developing countries like ours orphans besides missing the cozy and affectionateparental love and care also have to fight for their survival with no access to even verybasic facilities like two square meals a day, health cover and basic education.

In civilized societies the orphans are taken care of properly and in most of the casesgovernments would become the custodian of such parentless kids. Our religion, Islam, lays special emphasis on helping and caring such children but in country like ours onecant even think of proper care of orphans at government level where even the commoncitizens are not having access to basic amenities and well over 40 per cent people areliving below the poverty line.

To fill this gap a number of civil society organizations have taken upon this responsibilityto extend support to orphans in different ways and to fill the gap created by thegovernments inability or indifference toward this very important issue.

Karwan Development Foundation has picked up this noble cause with the aim to nurtureand groom these hapless and have-nots of society into a productive and civilizedmembers of society and save them from derailment, as in most of the cases it is notedthat the orphans who failed to get proper patronage, either of some civil society or someaffectionate family member, indulge in negative activities and become nuisance forsociety. So by extending support to orphans the foundation on one hand is fulfilling itsmoral and religious obligation and on the other contributing toward the collective good ofthe society.

    PROGRAM DESIGN

KDF has designed a unique program wherein they have not developed any formalorphanage and the foundation extends financial support to the orphans with preferenceto let them with some of their relatives with whom they feel comfortable to live with.

The main focus of the program is to extend financial assistance for their education andother basic needs. It is mandatory for the children, enrolled under this program, toattend the school. As in most of the cases the relatives taking care of these orphans arethemselves financially very weak and the financial assistance given to these orphansbecome a blessing in disguise for the whole family in meeting both ends.

According to our program the boy orphan will be extended help up to the age of 18years and the stipend depend on his educational performance while the girl studentsare extended financial assistance till the completion of their basic education and on theirmarriage these girls are provided with lump-sum financial support to help them starttheir practical life.

The whole exercise of adopting orphans is subject to a great scrutiny and checking ofthe most deserving ones and finally after passing them through a vigilant drill the mostdeserving orphans are picked and then on yearly basis their educational performance is

judged and the representatives of the foundation held regular meetings with theseorphans, their guardians and the staff of school where they are getting education.

    DM AIDs ROLE:

Danish Muslim Aid is extending financial assistance for the program It is a registeredMuslim charity in Denmark which is now supporting and patronizing hundreds of welfareprojects across the world with currently running these projects in some 20 different

countries including Syria, India, Afghanistan, Uganda, Palestine and Pakistan.

DM Aid also monitored the program by visiting Pakistan at least once a year. DM AIDalso takes strategic decisions about the program in consultation with its implantingpartner.

    KDF CONTRIBUTION:

Its been six years down the road that this program is functioning and the foundation isbringing improvements in it by every passing day. Under the program KDF has toidentify and enroll orphans after proper survey and verification process to pick the mostdeserving of the lot. MONTHLY FINANCIAL SUPPORT:

As already mentioned above the OSP designedby KDF has no proper orphanage and the kids

are kept with their relatives to avoid developmentof psychological problems which the kids maydevelop in orphanage. In most of the cases therelatives on whom the responsibility of an orphanchild rests with are financially weak and couldnot afford the kid proper education and otherbasic facilities.

The orphans used to get financial support onmonthly basis. Currently, the foundation provides

the kid with financial help after every threemonths and the money is directly given to theorphans. The foundation also make sure that theamount given by the foundation be spent on the education and if required, health needsof the kid. The amount provided to the orphan is fare enough to also provide somecushion to the financial requirements of the guardians family as well.

    ADDITIONAL SUPPORT:

KDF is managing the OSP with great care anddiligently evaluating the performance of the kidsunder the patronage of this programme. In thecourse of orphans assessment some of themare found poorer than the rest and in thesecases besides provision of the regular stipendthese kids are provided with books , schoolbags and uniforms every year.

KDF monitor and evaluate the performance oforphans enrolled under the program quitediligently. In case of some health cover requiredto any of these kids they would be providedwith adequate facilities. In case of kids notshowing improvement in education or have

some problems in learning, KDF review the situation and take appropriate steps tofacilitate them. Most of the times a change in school bring positive impact on theperformance of a kid. Sometimes shift from government to a private school serve thepurpose. In such cases where guardians were quite poor, KDF used to pay school fee of the orphans as well. This fee payment is in addition to the monthly assistance.

    RAMADAN/EID GIFTS:

    TRANSFER OF SAVINGS

A unique and important feature of the program is to transfer the savings, when a maleorphan reached 18 years of age or when a girl got married. This is to support the

orphan child in his or her co ming lifes need. KDF reviews the orphans need and decidethe mode of transfer of savings to the orphan.

In 2013 there were two orphan girls who got married i.e. Asia and Nagina.

Nagina got married in the beginning of theyear, she was asked about her need anddesire before her wedding. So upon her statedneed, KDF provided two goats to Nagina. Adinner set, water set and a water cooler was

also gifted to her on her wedding. Currentlyshe is having 6 goats in total from the one pairprovided at the time of her wedding. She ishappy and getting benefit from the animals.Nagina had been associated with OSP for 6years. In the picture, Nagina is with the giftsand 2 goats.

Asia Bibi was married in the end of the year;she completed her intermediate from GovtCollege Muzaffarabad. She was a small kidwhen enrolled in Orphan Support Program.

Alhamdolillah she got married and expenses ofher marriage were contributed from OSP.Since she was without parents, her sending off(Rukhsati or Barat) was managed by Mr.Muhammad Mushtaq who is coordinator ofKarwan Development Foundation in Kashmir.
