An International TeamGorilla Doctors is a tight-knit team of veterinarians that serves as the region’s go-to source for wildlife medicine. As gorilla health experts, our team collaborates on every case of a sick or injured gorilla, teaching and learning from one another to continue to grow our collective knowledge of mountain and Grauer’s gorilla health and conservation. This year, for the first time ever, our entire team gathered for a strategic planning retreat at Mgahinga National Park in Uganda in November (see top photo above).

Treating Sick GorillasSecond only to trauma, infectious disease is the leading cause of illness and death in mountain gorillas. Our veterinarians closely monitor the habituated gorilla groups for any signs of illness, such as coughing or a runny nose, ready to intervene and administer antibiotics when needed. In 2014, two gorilla groups in Volcanoes National Park experienced respiratory disease outbreaks; fortunately, Drs. Jean Felix Kinani and Jean Bosco Noheri were able to treat the sick individuals to help stop the spread of illness to other gorillas.

Eastern Gorilla Health MonitoringMore than 500 times in 2014, Gorilla Doctors veterinarians made the often-difficult trek up steep slopes, through dense forest, and in challenging weather to assess the health of every single habituated group of mountain and Grauer’s gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. Routine health monitoring forms the foundation of our program and helps to ensure that every gorilla suffering from an illness or injury receives a complete and timely veterinary assessment and medical treatment when needed.

The Threat of PoachingPoaching continues to be a serious threat to both mountain and Grauer’s gorillas, as people living in communities around the parks set snares to catch bushmeat to feed their families. In 2014, Gorilla Doctors intervened an average of once a month to free an ensnared gorilla, successfully saving the lives of infant, juvenile and subadult gorillas who would have likely suffered from life-threatening infection. Our international team of veterinarians stands by 24/7, 365 days a year, ready to conduct an emergency medical intervention to save an injured or ill gorilla.

Young gorillas with their inquisitive nature, like infant Nkundurwanda in Sabyinyo group, often fall victim to poachers’ snares.

Health Care for Orphan GorillasIn 2014, our veterinarians continued to provide veterinary care for the only four mountain gorillas living in captivity in the world: Maisha, Ndakasi, Ndeze and Matabishi. Gorilla Doctors assisted the Congolese wildlife authorities to rescue orphaned Grauer’s gorilla Kalonge from poachers. As well, Gorilla Doctors was particularly happy and honored to play a key role in bringing orphan Grauer’s gorilla Ihirwe back to her home country of DRC, when she was airlifted to the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE) center.

Always LearningA primary goal of the Gorilla Doctors program is to advance the knowledge and skills of our staff and mentor the next generation of wildlife health experts in the region. This year, Gorilla Doctors supported its Employee Health Program manager Jean Paul Lukusa to finish his Masters in Public Health, and Rwanda Administrator Schadrack Niyonzima completed his MBA at Bugema University in Uganda. Gorilla Doctors also hosted a sabbatical for Dr. Tanja Zabka (Roche Pharmaceuticals) to work with staff, students and colleagues in Kampala, Uganda on building a network for wildlife pathology.

Discovering PathogensGorilla Doctors continued to lead the USAID-funded PREDICT project in Uganda and Rwanda, making big contributions to the discovery of known and new viruses in thousands of samples collected from primates, rodents, and bats that could pose an emerging pandemic disease threat. The PREDICT consortium, led by UC Davis and operating in 20 countries worldwide, will embark upon a next phase of the project, with surveillance continuing in wildlife and expanding to include domestic animals and people whose locations and activities bring them into close contact with wildlife.

July 2015 September 2015

The land surrounding mountain and Grauer’s gorilla habitat is some of the most densely populated in Africa, with most people farming for their livelihoods. Pictured here, fields cultivated by members of the community press against the boundary of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.

One Health: It’s All ConnectedGorilla Doctors embraces the perspective that the health of wildlife, people and the environment are inextricably linked. Therefore, Gorilla Doctors works diligently to boost the health of not only the critically endangered eastern gorillas, but also the national park workers and their families, and to better understand the health of other species of wildlife who share the gorillas’ habitat.

Conducting ResearchEvery year, our staff and graduate students from around the world conduct critical research on the health of eastern gorillas and their ecosystem. In 2014, Gorilla Doctors hosted Murdoch University PhD candidate Dr. Alisa Kubala, who is conducting research on malaria in eastern gorillas in Rwanda and DRC. UC Davis PhD candidate Laurie Harris completed her fieldwork in Rwanda and analyzed data for her PhD on the epidemiology of respiratory illness in gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, and UC Davis PhD candidate Tierra Smiley Evans conducted laboratory work to better understand the epidemiology of herpesviruses in gorillas. In addition, Dr. Olivier Nsengimana, Field Veterinarian for PREDICT Rwanda, is working on a Master’s Degree in Veterinary Science at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and is looking retrospectively at viral pathogen exposure in eastern gorillas.

Keeping Gorilla Guardians HealthyMonitoring the health of the mountain and Grauer’s gorillas is only one piece of the One Health puzzle; Gorilla Doctors also works to make sure every ranger and tracker working in close proximity to the gorillas in the national parks is also given access to preventive health care. In 2014, over 400 gorilla conservation workers and more than 2,000 of their family members received deworming medications and health education through our Employee Health Program.

Close CollaborationsThe work of Gorilla Doctors would not be possible without the close partnerships we share with the Rwandan, Ugandan, and Congolese governments, as well as with the many NGOs working in the region. We deeply value these partnerships and aim to strengthen them year after year to ensure our mutually-held ultimate goal: to see the mountain and Grauer’s gorilla populations thrive in central Africa.

Critical Members of the Gorilla Doctors Team: Our DonorsOn November 4th, Gorilla Doctors hosted the inaugural Gorilla Love fundraising event in Beverly Hills, CA. Three hundred wildlife enthusiasts and adventure travelers turned out to show their

“Gorilla Love” at the prestigious ACE Gallery. We look forward to hosting Gorilla Love II in 2015!

Our work would not be possible without the generosity of our dedicated donors and sponsors and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every supporter. In addition to generous donations from hundreds of individuals throughout the year, Gorilla Doctors receives grants from several key foundations and organizations to continue its life-saving work.
