Annual Report 2014 -15

Introduction

Indian Cancer Society has been through a momentous year of activity. Introducing initiatives is both exciting & uplifting; getting on with implementation calls for application and a long, hard slog, No quick results accrue, but belief in the goal gives the strength to tread the rocky road that slowly but surely becomes easier with time.

A long standing dream of growing closer to the ICS family saw fruition when members of the National Managing Committee & representatives from Bangalore, Kolkata & Nagpur joined us to deliberate closer links within ICSOne. It ended years of what one participant called “benign neglect”, and began a process of sharing good practice.

Efforts of the previous year certainly reinforced ICS Delhi’s Brand Image in Delhi. AshaKiran, our new Mobile Medical Vehicle gave visibility to ICS & to its sponsor, eliciting interest in our work. It brought an Invitation from the Ministry of Health &Family Welfare to participate in a Cancer Screening Programme in the Ministry pavilion at the India International Trade Fair (November 2014); it encouraged Delhi Administration & Delhi Police engagement with ICS during the year. It pushed ICS firmly into a Net-Connected world, and our long-suffering Staff into learning new computer skills!

They say it takes a Village to raise a Child; we believe it takes a Community participation to fight Cancer. In January 2015, we presented our first big composite Community effort at Brand Building for ICS as the prime mover in fighting cancer. Rise against Cancer brought participants from all walks of life & every age to participate in an all-day series of events. We hope each participant becomes a voice multiplier for ICS.

The year came to a close with a BANG! The NDTV Fortis Health4you campaign on Child Cancer invited ICS to become Implementation Partner. This involved an enormous amount of work for Delhi, but took the ICS image across the country more effectively than in the past. It also showcased the partnership between Branches in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata & Bangalore, working in tandem to deliver results. ICS Delhi certainly ensured that ICS was recognized as a Beacon of Hope for many children across India. It also emphasized our purpose: The Conquest of Cancer by Choice; not Chance.

Read on to discover our amazing year!

Cancer Detection Centre & Mobile Medical Vans Cancer Screening

The Cancer Detection Centre, Babar Road is a little oasis, catering to citizens of Delhi walking in to avail the screening services. The Centre has seen a lot of activity this year as Staff get used to the InterNet programme introduced under ICSConnect. Nearly 20,000 data files have been put on Electronic Records, and all Staff is familiar with the EXL system of data entry. They are now getting trained to use Tablets so that all data can be routed directly to Cloud. AshaKiran: The induction of AshaKiran, with EIL Sponsorship began in 2012. ICS worked with Fuji Films India who undertook a turnkey project; to deliver a Mobile Medical Van fitted with both Xray & Mammography machines in a fully fitted vehicle. EIL sanctioned the entire cost of Rs 1.5 crore. The vehicle has an Ashok-Leyland chassis, & the fabrication of the body, installation of both machines, Air conditioning was executed by Mercury Motors, Maharashtra. It has a Siemens X Ray machine, ADS Medical System from Hologic for Mammography, Fuji Film CR system for digital reading of X rays and Mammograms, Fuji Film CR system for digital reading of X rays and Mammograms. The vehicle is Euro4 compliant & runs on both CNG & Diesel. It is fitted with a diesel Generator, particularly useful in many villages where there is no electricity. The vehicle arrived in Delhi in March 2014. It was then sent for Fitness checks before Registration with RTO Delhi. It was formally accepted by EIL & handed over to ICS on 23 May, by Chairman EIL in the presence of Board Members.

Members & Staff of ICS held our own Inauguration, with our long time Mentor, Mr. KK Mehta & other members on 30 May-2014.

Calibration of equipment & the long drawn process of AERB clearance had to be undertaken before the vehicle became completely operational. Indian Cancer Society added value to AshaKiran by installing tele-radiology reporting to reduce time taken in reporting both Xrays & Mammography in a CSR undertaking with Columbia Asia Hospitals. Reports are now generated within 24 hours, & transmitted electronically to ICS Cloud Server. They are also downloaded for delivery to the Client.

AshaKiran is now a state-of-the- art Mobile Medical Unit. In addition to its basic equipment it now has the first tele-radiology service on a moving platform in India.

Impact of Asha Kiran - AshaKiran was used to optimum capacity during the India International Trade Fair – ICS was invited by the MOHFW to participate in this event. We screened 1600 people from 14th Nov to 27th Nov at Pragati Maidan and detected 105 pre-cancer conditions. The Government of India undertook this screening on a payment basis from us.

Page 7

Asha Kiran has participated in two Raahagiri mornings at Connaught Place, undertaking Breast examination & Cervical Screening. Hotel Janpath was the venue for a preview of service to various camps under Gender Resource Centre Mass screening. The MMV was also showcased at Rise against Cancer, & SAARC Oncology at Leela Hotel, Gurgaon, where her presence generated a lot of interest.

Despite her size, which precludes traversing the narrow lanes of urban slums and JJ colonies, the vehicle has proved her mettle. In the first year of service, (end September 2014 – end February 2015, AshaKiran has screened 3610 people.

Gender Resource Centre (GRC) program was conducted in 2 parts:

a) Train the Trainer (Awareness) & b) Cancer Screening in GRC areas

Train the Trainer: This was an initiative which Indian Cancer Society undertook, much on the lines of the School Cluster Training program, by training the Community Health Worker to become cancer aware. Each Health Worker (ASHA) looks after 100,000 persons living in a Basti. So their outreach is enormous. The first Training Workshop was held at the Delhi State Secretariat for a period of 3 days. The first training was done for 2 days but on demand from the GRC’s, the second workshop was just a day long affair. All participants were provided literature & Posters in Hindi. Each one received a Certificate at the end of the training.

This Training session was followed by Cancer Screening within the GRC’s from where the Community Worker had come for training. This initiative was supported by Petronet LNG. Though the sponsorship was for Screening was of 1000 people, ICS went ahead and screened approximately 2200 people as we did not want to disappoint the GRCs who had wanted the screening. Subsequent Sponsorship was used to cover this Initiative.

IITF – ICS was invited by MOHFW to participate in the India International trade Fair which was held from 14th to 27th Nov 2014. The MOHFW wanted Indian Cancer Society to screen Visitors to the Trade Fair, under Ministry banner. Since it would have been impossible to screen all the footfalls we advised them to have a sieving mechanism where only high risk people were sent to us for screening. The event was a resounding success. Indian Cancer society was provided a complete Area (No 4) where preventive cancer screening was done.

Indian Cancer Society Screened 1611 individuals. 99 high risk women were offered Mammography on advice from gynecologist.

101 individuals had precancerous lesions. They have been advised to report to IRCH and Safdarjung Hospital for treatment.

Page 8

The major advantage for ICS accruing from this initiative was that officials from the Health ministry, including the Health Minister got a good look of Asha Kiran. It registered its presence in all minds. CDC staff worked to capacity with a smile, earning praise from other stake-holders.

ICS is grateful to Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute for permitting safe parking of AshaKiran at their Aashray.

ICSConnect- Although the purpose of this IT Initiative has been safe storage of CDC Data over the years, it has grown in scope as we proceeded. Hard Copy Files hold data collected by Indian Cancer Society of 30 years. Valuable data was lost every 3 years, (when old files are destroyed) due to lack of storage space. Retrieving data was a huge task, & new files were created for Repeat Visits. Electronic Records maintenance was the only way forward, to both rationalize the storage as well as to make data available for Research.

NMDC contributed seed money to start ICSConnect. A Family Foundation of Mrs. Reva Nayar (Member MC) donated the balance of funds required to get the Project on its way. Messrs Taurus Glocal has worked to train ICS Staff & to store data in electronic format. Taurus also undertook interface between Columbia Asia (teleradiology), Mediff (PACS) & FujiFilm (Equipment). The Old Mobile Medical Van has also been connected to Tele-Radiology Services since February 2015. Datawind made a gift of 6 Tablets to facilitate direct uploading of data.

ICS JAGRITI

Mrs. Rita Bhalla - President In the past one year we have made earnest endeavors in spreading awareness amongst the general public about cancer and it seems to be bearing positive results. Regular talks are being held to spread Awareness mainly about healthy lifestyle, importance of early detection & women related cancers. Our Cancer Control effort is slowly but surely bringing about a change in the mindset of people, wherein they are realizing the fact that their personal choices could adversely impact their health in a big way. Congratulations to all Volunteers for their hard work and dedication in achieving our stated objectives. But at the same time, we need to remember that we have a long journey and an extremely challenging task, The series of projects undertaken over the past few years are bearing fruit and new initiatives are taking shape. The year under review has been a year of learning and we have gained recognition in various institutes, corporate houses and organizations. ICS Jagriti puts on record the efforts of Ms Dhanashri Tiwari who collated data from each Unit, each month & put it together in the e-Newsletter, keeping all members informed of all the ICS activities. It also carries Cancer News of some interest to all. It has been highly appreciated and is a great source of information and record of activity. Dhana had a Special Mention at the Concert. Honours Mrs Rekha Gulabani was honoured on 26th March during the Artists against Cancer event, for her exceptional contribution & dedication to duty. Special mention of Mrs Sneh Kapur was also made on 26th March, Artists against Cancer, for her very inspiring dedication, enthusiasm & hard work. Awareness Talks Awareness Talks are the prime responsibility of Jagriti. Talks were given at Schools, Colleges & Institutes to include their NSS Programme, IIT-Delhi, ITI- Malviya Nagar, ITS Engineering College- Greater NOIDA, NCC Cadets in Delhi & Ahmedabad, were some groups ,to name a few. Awareness Talks to Women groups in various places included wives of Defense Personnel in Delhi.Volunteers also gave Talks to Gender Resource workers at Delhi Secretariat. Talks were undertaken at Depots of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) during the shift changing hours to reach out to more conductors, drivers & other staff. 12 Depots (around 600 Staff) were addressed.

Page 15

Old Age Homes were given Awareness Talks followed by Screening under the HelpAge India Project. They really appreciated this initiative. Mrs. Rita Bhalla undertook outstation Awareness Talks at Pachmarhi, Bareilly and Ahmedabad. Air-force, Army, Navy & Doctor's wives were given detailed Awareness Talks. Corporates like Mahindra & Mahindra, Boston Consultancy Group, FICCI & many more were given talks on Cancer Awareness. Training was also held for Gender Resource Centre personnel It was a great success & has been very impactful as the reach of their volunteers is very vast. Breast Cancer talks assessed by PHFI, covered more than 1500 ladies & were a fresh initiative in assessing impact of such talks. It was gratifying to know that the Awareness level of women rose dramatically. Talks at Raahagiri, Delhi, in October & November, as well as the India International Trade Fair (November), supported by a Screening Team were very popular & a vast number benefited not only by the talk but also Screening at our Mobile Van. Mrs. Indra Jasuja & Mrs. Rekha Gulabani chaired Sessions at the CanIndia Conclave in November 2014.

Workshops Volunteers participated in regular Training workshops to train fresh Volunteers, as well as Refresher Training for Senior Volunteers that have been conducted at regular intervals. To improve the quality of talks in July it was proposed that each member (giving talks) should get a pen drive to take relevant presentations. This would ensure quality talks, sticking to given time, not missing out any relevant time & holding audience attention. Some volunteers did take advantage of this & we covered various topics in detail. It was also proposed that a half-hour be spent at every meet to discuss the talks given thereby learn from each other. Before talks are given the speaker is practiced and the presentations are modified according to the profile of the audience. This has not only helped volunteers give better talks but also enables them to hold the audience interest. Volunteers not only delivered Talks, but also participated in Panel Discussions and spoken at Seminars held at various hospitals. This has helped increase their knowledge and keep abreast with the latest trends in Cancer Care. Events Under “Train the Trainer” programme, a Cluster Training Workshop was conducted for

teachers at KR Mangalam World School. It was a great success & was followed by a session by our interns. We intend taking this to other School clusters too.

Page 17

World No Tobacco Day was a great success. Students of 29 schools in Delhi participated with great enthusiasm. The Annual Skit Competition & the Slogan Competition were held at Naval Public School, Chanakyapuri. The two topics to choose from were - No child is immune to Peer Pressure. -Tobacco Companies kill their Best Customers.

The volunteers from all units of ICS joined hands to make this event a success. Rise against Cancer was held on 31st January, 2015 at the Jawaharlal Lal Nehru

Stadium. It had the Annual Walk & Cyclothon for Cancer Awareness & was successfully held with a marked increase in the number of participating schools, colleges & a lot of NCC support. The performances by students were highly appreciated for their creativity and ingenuity. Nukkad Nataks en route the Walk for Awareness was highly appreciated. The Rock Concert with participation by 5 Bands from the NorthEast of India were spectacular. Sadly, the audience was very thin, due to inadequate publicity & the very cold weather.

Artists against Cancer “Oorja!” was a huge success, with a house full of supporters of

Indian Cancer Society. The audience was left mesmerized by the dance performance of Mrs Shovana Narayan & thumri recital by Mrs Kumud Diwan. The event was held at the India Habitat Centre on 26 March, 2015.

ICSOne was held in Delhi & was a great learning experience. Exchange of ideas, practices & views from across Branches of ICS helped us learn from each other.

Helpline - The ICS helpline numbers are listed on the website and are garnering positive response and we are receiving more queries from people than ever before, particularly after every FM radio talk.

FM Gold Radio Talks are held every first & third Fridays for fifteen minutes. We have made it more interesting by having it as an interactive session covering varied topics suitable to the occasion & asking a prize winning question in the end to keep the audience interest alive. We have also done away with the song to have more time and also make it a point to talk about our Cancer Detection Centre & mobile screening vans. This translates into higher footfalls at CDC after the talk.

Presence of Jagriti volunteers on Television has increased. Panel discussions on Gynae Cancers, Blood cancer, Oral cancer, advertisement impact on Tobacco Control, Government role in Tobacco Control generated a lot of interest amongst listeners. We are keen to help our fellow human beings in giving the right advice at the right time.

Interns / Youth Programmes We had a number of National & International students as interns with ICS. They attended not only our Orientation Programme but also worked with all units of ICS. Their enthusiasm and eagerness renewed our hope in our fight against cancer.

Training

Sunita Gupta (Joint Secretary Training/Tobacco)

The following is a list of Workshops held between Feb-2014 – March 2015

Workshop on Counselling Skills by Dr Sujatha Sharma on 13th February, 2014

Attended by 17 volunteers. The enthusiasm of volunteers to learn and absorb old and new skills is a heartening sight. Dr Sujatha is a practicing clinical psychologist for more than 25 years and has a M.Phil (gold medalist) and Ph.D from NIMHANS. She took up the important topics of counselling patients and caregivers at diagnosis time, during treatment and how to deal with terminal illness. The workshop lasted for more than 2 hrs and left us all wanting more.

Workshop by Dr G.K. Rath on future of Oncology on 19th March-2014

Dr Rath is head of IRCH and a familiar face to ICS Volunteers. The workshop may have started late but Dr Rath impressed everyone with his enthusiasm and willingness to share his knowledge and answer questions “till late night”. His humour and simple way of explaining difficult things kept everyone engrossed .The topics he covered formally were:

1. Magnitude of the Cancer Challenge today 2. Where are we headed? 3. How can Support Groups like ICS Cancer Sahyog work for best benefit to Patients? Though formally he covered these points…in actual he covered a whole canvas of NCD, population, lifestyle, treatments offered…and many more. In-House Workshop for new volunteers on 26th March, 2014

Trainers: Jyotsna Govil, Sunita Gupta, Dr. Deepika Bumb

Attendance was dismally short with only 2 people turning up. This could not be postponed as Mr Kapil Rastogi from Moradabad had come specially .Just 1 more volunteer came. However the show must go on so the trainers gave their best!!!

Interactive Workshop on Emotional Support, 19TH MAY, 2014

Trainers: Indra jasuja and Sangita Malhotra

Attendance: 8 volunteers

The need for frequent brushing up on counseling skills for old volunteers led to this workshop. Our hope is for all Sahyog hospital volunteers to attend these workshops as there is an exchange

Page 19

of experiences. Different hospitals require different skills. The trainers and volunteers interacted and shared their rich experience and problems faced .The needs and problems faced by volunteers differ a lot depending on the hospital they go to, private or government. The immediate queries faced by patients in Government Hospitals are more information related which room to go to, which Doctor to see, how to get forms filled, how to get medicines, where to get place to stay. Our volunteers readily provide this aid and encourage them with kind words and inform them of the need to take good diet and most importantly follow Doctor’s orders. In private hospitals there is a chance for counseling and emotional support.

Workshop for New Volunteers, 14TH OCTOBER, 2014

ATTENDANCE: 9

The need to get new volunteers is felt by all the units. However unfortunately we are not able to sustain the interest of volunteers. This needs to be looked at seriously. Volunteer management needs to be taken up including proper follow-up & mentorship of new Volunteers.

Workshop on Radiation at Gurgaon – 7 November 2014

Attendance: 17 persons On 7th May 2014 Dr. Tejinder Kataria held a workshop for ICS volunteers at Medanta on Radiation. It was a very informative talk on various forms of radiation and its effects. 17 of ICS volunteers from Gurgaon and Delhi attended the same. Workshop in Artemis Hospital – November 2014 In November, to celebrate the cervical cancer month, Artemis arranged a workshop with their brand Ambassador Mary Kom. The presence of ICS in numbers was very evident. Dr. Devlina Chakravarty lauded the work of ICS volunteers

Workshop by Wellness Coach VAISHALI AGARWAL, 16TH JANUARY 2015

ATTENDANCE; 11 The new concept of “Wellness “as being different from counseling was explained by Vaishali. She is a practicing wellness coach and gave an interesting introduction .A patient /caregiver needs guidance on how to achieve health-wise sustainable goals. Vaishali guides them to get to the goal taking steps. Workshop on 9th March 2015 on Cervical Cancer By Dr Partha Basu This workshop was enthusiastically attended by 17 volunteers. Dr Basu gave in-depth first hand information about cervical cancer In India. He suggested Pap smear is not cost effective and VIA is the best method for early detection of Cervical Cancer. He also advised that PSA for Prostate

Page 20

Cancer detection is not required as a Screening tool. These are two important but controversial points for ICS Detection Center. He advised ICS to concentrate on spreading awareness and importance of follow up.

Workshop for new Volunteers on 10th March 8 new volunteers attended the workshop. PPTs of the various sections were used by the trainers. There are people from out of Delhi who attend these workshops to learn and open their own awareness NGOs. We need to formulate a rule whereby they at least acknowledge the contribution of ICS, Delhi. The coordination committee will be deliberating on this point. YOUTH INITIATIVES Schools Cluster Training Coordinator: Aruna Ummat, Rita Thokchom Trainers: Sunita Gupta, Rita Bhalla, Rita Thokchom Indra Jasuja, Jyotsna Govil This year, Cluster Training was undertaken with Teachers of 5 Kumaramangalam Schools in Delhi. Two students from IIM –Indore, one from Symbiosis, one from Delhi University & 3 School children interned with ICS. Each group was given Basic understanding of Cancer. Cluster training programme at KR Mangalam World school, GK-2, New Delhi on May 20, 2014

The cluster training programme is conducted for the teachers of different schools. ICS Cancer Jagriti leads this programme and aims at guiding the teachers with the help

of the necessary information regarding cancer and expects from the teachers to pass on the same information to their students.

Since teachers are like the second parents of a child, ICS targets the most vulnerable population of the society by training and providing information to the teachers of school of Delhi NCR.

The seminar comprised of two main objectives : Diet Control Tobacco Control AIESEC INTERNS WORKSHOPS IN JULY 2014 & FEBRUARY 2015 Intern Coordinator: Rita Thokchom Trainers: Rita Bhalla, Rekha Gulabani, Indra Jasuja

CANCER SAHYOG

Mrs. Sita Paintal, President

Introduction Cancer Sahyog is the emotional support arm of Indian Cancer Society, Delhi. The survivor volunteers working with patients & families across Delhi & NCR offer its most significant contribution.

Cancer Sahyog, as the name implies has relentlessly continued its commitment to support the fight against cancer since its inception. The past year, was just one more year in its growth and the journey towards providing assistance and support to and by the 100 plus group of special volunteers who have either heroically fought the disease or have been primary caregivers.

The dreaded diagnosis needs specialized support and care not only for the patient but also for the immediate family. Very often a family member or a near one is entrusted with the responsibility of taking care of a Patient with no preparation & without any institutional support. Cancer Sahyog with its volunteers gives hope and support to the family through empathy and financial assistance, as per the laid down framework of rules. This support encourages the patient to overcome the disease as others have done. Many patients after their recovery continue their association with the organization or join as selfless volunteers to do ‘their bit’ for this war against Cancer.

Cancer Sahyog currently supports twelve hospitals in the Delhi NCR (including Noida & Gurgaon). With the addition of two hospitals recently, Delhi State Cancer Hospital, Delhi, and Yash Cancer Hospital, Gurgaon the patients are being given facilities closer home to obviate their seeking treatment at far away centres. The mobile diagnostic van Asha Kiran is another step in bringing diagnostic facilities closer home. This initiative of spreading facilities and awareness is expected to give additional benefit to the patients with the involvement of RWAs.

Team Though there are several dedicated volunteers that actually conduct Hospital visits & work for Sahyog, the following is some of the key members that steer the whole unit and its volunteers towards their goal. Among them are: Ms Sita Paintal (President ), Vice – Presidents Ms Rashmi Vohra and Ms Priya Singh Khanna; & Secretaries Ms Sangita Malhotra & Madhu Narain

Page 23

Emotional Support and Volunteers The job of a Hospital Volunteer is most critical to Cancer Sahyog and Hospital Volunteers are its backbone. Despite their family commitments, and sadly, recurring cancers, they are regular in their commitment. They work for the parent Indian Cancer Society to raise awareness through various initiatives. These dedicated women & men continue in their task of offering emotional support to the patients, giving them the courage to face the disease squarely.

Two more hospitals have been added in the year; hence our volunteers now go to 12 hospitals in total. The two new additions are Delhi State Cancer Institute Dilshad Garden, (emotional support) and Yash Cancer Foundation in Gurgaon (emotional support and distribution of Prosthesis and Bras).

Total no. of patients given emotional support – 5101

Medical Assistance 2014-2015 Cancer Sahyog also provides a financial support to poor patients. We realize that the cost of initial diagnostic tests is daunting for many newly diagnosed patients. To help them, a new initiative has been started, offering Rs. 25,000 for initial diagnostic tests.

Only new breast cancer patients are eligible for this test and the treatment would be given free of charge. A new medicine for Breast Cancer is going through clinical trials in 90 hospitals on 500 patients in the whole world. Some hospitals where our volunteers go in Gurgaon have been selected and our volunteers have been invited to help with patients, progress, patients’ response records, reports etc.

Obituaries ICS lost three very dedicated, experienced and committed workers- Ms. Asha Choudhary, Ms Usha Bakshi and Ms. Indubala Arora. All three of them fought against a recurrence of cancer very bravely (and in Indu’s case, more than once), but lost the battle. May God grant them eternal peace.

Conclusion

Our standing today is because of the dedication and hard work of volunteers, backed by committed backroom support from Ms Usha Ohri and Mr Anuj Sharma and the ICS office staff.

Prashanti

Mrs. Renuka Prasad, President

The past year has been a very quiet one. The income has fallen drastically and we are now at the crossroads wondering about the very existence of this Unit. However, the activities have been going on in all the three areas of Diagnostic, Healing and Rehab.

Few women come in for mammography and those coming for DEXA Scans has reduced, making the earnings from both touch low levels. The Income statements will stand evidence of this. Talks are on with LDCT for a complete revamp of Prashanti.

The Breast Cancer Rehab Centre has many women coming in to use the Lympho press machine and they go away satisfied with the results which they achieved after a period of 3-4 wks of using the drainage machine. The Bra and Prosthesis work is also not much except for the fact that Prashanti is now a storehouse of the Bras and prosthesis which are distributed free in Hospitals by Sahyog Volunteers.

The Healing Center sees the patients, both adults and children coming in regularly every Tuesday. They celebrate the various festivals with much enthusiasm and bring much needed cheer to the staff and Prashanti as a whole.

Mammography

A total number of 106 screenings were done, out of which 85 paid for, while 21 were sponsored. The sponsor was Pink Chain Foundation. The Mammography is being read by Dr. Vneeta Kapur from Col. Pant’s clinic in Green Park

Annual Report – Gurgaon

Joint Secretary – Mrs. Indra Jasuja

Gurgaon chapter of ICS is three years of age. Initiated in the year 2012, a few of the dedicated volunteers who live in Gurgaon, are putting in their time, resources and heart into the cause of Cancer Control; attacking this dreaded disease from all angles, be it emotional support in hospitals, awareness programmes in Schools & Corporate Houses, or medical support to the needy patients.. The work is progressing in leaps and bounds and three more volunteers have joined the group this year. On I7 May 2014, Mrs. Shalini Wadhwa held The Festival of Hope at DLF Club, where 5 of ICS Breast Cancer Survivors walked the ramp. This was again repeated in Cyber Hub on 21st. of Nov.2014. Unlike previous Festivals, no ICS members walked the ramp. But our presence was very much in evidence with awareness stalls where literature was distributed free of cost. The high light was the Tambola organized by ICS. The Harley Davidson Bikers club, which had one Breast cancer Survivor among them, donated a lump sum to ICS.

Our members from Gurgaon have been participating in a number of workshops arranged by several large Hospitals on different Cancer subjects.

Hospital Report: Mrs Rashmi Vohra (Director Hospitals in Gurgaon). ICS volunteers are working in three hospitals Medanta, Fortis and Artemis. As these are all private hospitals we tried to establish contact with Civil Hospital Gurgaon so far there has not been a very positive response from them as the doctors there have their own Charity organization. Nevertheless we have decided to visit the same at least twice a month. On 7 May 2014 Dr. Tejinder Kataria held a workshop for ICS volunteers at Medanta on Radiation. It was a very informative talk on various forms of radiation and its effects. 17 ICS volunteers from Gurgaon and Delhi attended the same.

In November, to celebrate the cervical cancer month, Artemis arranged a workshop with their brand Ambassador Mary Kom. The presence of ICS in numbers was very evident. Dr. Devlina Chakravarty lauded the work of ICS volunteers

Another landmark in the Artemis and Medanta has been achieved. They both have agreed to give discounts on procurement of drugs from the stipulated Chemists to patients who are being supported by Cancer sahyog

We are supplying Free Bras and Prosthesis to Medanta Patients only, because of the support by Dr. Kanchan Kaur and Dr. Ashok Vaid. We have helped 50 patients this year.

Page 38

Schools: Director, KIran Jaitly. The ICS initiative of leveraging opportunity provided by Schools network in Gurgaon continued unabated during the last year. World No Tobacco Day 23rd April 2014 The initiative of enabling children to think and express themselves about the subject: "Ban Tobacco advertising" had a very enthustice response. 14 Gurgaon schools participated and shared the accolades with other schools from Delhi in both the Poster and the "5-minute" skit competitions. Each of the submissions indicated significant efforts put and very involved participation.

Pathways World School Aravalli-- "Walkathon"may /June 2014 PWS primary school surprised us by organizing a walkathon in the school with the intent of helping people with health hazards-- all to "making a difference to other people’s lives!" Each student contributed Rs 30/- per round and were able to collect RS 51000/- which they decided to give ICS for patient care. The thought communicates increased sensitivity and awareness of Cancer. Gurgaon Cyclothon / Walk for Cancer: 21st Dec 2014

An Awareness programme plus Registration for the Cyclothon and Walk was held at MGF Mall on 6 and 7 December. The enthusiastic response from the public gladdened the volunteers’ heart, with affirmation of the fact that our efforts are bearing some fruit and that people are becoming more and more receptive to these programmes. ICS expresses heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Denise and Mr. Akshat Jain (MGF Mall) for their unstinted support. Pre-awareness and registration for the main event was handled very successively by schoolchildren and their teachers under the supervision of ICS volunteers. Schools participating were DPS Maruti Kunj & Blue Bells Sector 4,

The highlight of the year was the Cyclothon for School children and Walk for adults proclaiming a healthy Life Style, (Get Fit; Stay Fit) ; with Raahgiris on 21st. December 2014. Many of the schools cried off at the last moment because of the Bomb scare after the Rawalpindi School, Pakistan debacle. Despite that there were about 800 children and adults backing ICS to raise their voice in protest & walk against the “Terror” of Cancer. Mr. Naveen Kshatriya, Mrs. Sita Paintal and Mrs. Yadav (Assistant Commissioner of Police) flagged off the event. Our benefactors were Mr. Bhajanka, Pathways Aravali, Mr. and Mrs. Diwan, Dabur, Pepsi, NDTV and ToI (which gave ICS a beautiful write up). Thanks to Raahgiri for making things easy for us & to Pathways World School (the back drop). . At the same time there were about 12 -schools who were represented. The presence of Blue Bells, Ridge Valley, DPS Maruti Kunj, DPS Sushant Lok and CC school, was heartening. Several children came independent of School, with their Parents.

Page 39

They livened the atmosphere with their presence and also gave Nukkad Nataks, Yoga, music, and dancing. .

Overall 500 cyclists took part. It was impossible for anyone to be untouched by the impact of a sea of children in yellow t- shirts cycling around with flags/ balloons on their cycles.

Other activities during the cyclothon were Skits (3 schools), 2 Yoga demos and laughter therapy. In addition to the above, all Raahgir’s were keen observers who expressed their appreciation of ICS efforts in enhancing awareness etc.

I Discovery Pre-school Initiative: 21st March 2015 On 21 March, Mrs.Shalini Gauba, Principal of I-Discovery School for Tiny Tots , and one of our benefactors has again going to hold an art exhibition by infants and donated the sum collected by her to ICS. She has donated about Rs. 43, 000/.. Mrs. Gauba is herself a Cancer Survivor. This is the second year where she has organized this donation. Once again the Gauba’s relentlessly put forward their commitment to the ICS cause by appealing to the kids parents and providing an opportunity to them for fund contribution for ICS. We have done a few Awareness talks with Corporates in Gurgaon. The most forthcoming was CB&I who motivated Employee participation in funding for Breast Cancer patient. They were also present at the walk. Our aim is to target more Corporates for their CSR activities and also awareness talks. No cluster training was done in Gurgaon during the year. This year Blue Bell School has shown a lot of interest for holding one.

An Interactive session was done for all Hospital Volunteers on 26th. March where each one came out with the difficulties they were facing in order to deal with the patients. The queries and doubts were removed by this interaction and we have decided to have this type of session once in every 6 months. This was possible due to the small cohesive group in this NCR.

So we march ahead with warmth in our heart a song on our lips, a tear in our eyes and an unmatched determination of support for all those who need us. It is the call of the hour which no one can deny.

Membership & Insurance

Linking of Insurance & Membership requires re-examination. Independent Membeship drive creates a Membership cadre. Those seeking insurance have no interest in the Society beyond Insurance premium paid on time. We had started this process of Membership Drive a few years ago, but it was still born!

Donation Boxes Mr. M Lal continues his diligent routine of monitoring Donation Boxes. Mr. Anuj Sharma has been accompanying him as understudy and assistant. Long time Donors

ICS Delhi has been singularly lacking in creating long-term interest among Donors. In a fast changing corporate scenario, & without “friends in high places”, the very few long term Donors such as the Dalmia Manav Sewa Trust, & HelpAge India are rare gems. We thank them for their faith reposed in ICS.

Finance, Office & Administration As ICS ventured into new areas of interest – whether IT upgrde (ICSConnect), tele-radiology, or an understanding of the intricacies of finance in the Cancerthon, it is the Office & CDC Staff that has valiantly coped with ever-new demands, of understanding & work beyond their ken. Dr. Priya Parmar, Ms. Rita Thokchom & Mr. Atul Kumar have studied the intricacies of CSR & found ways to make ICS headway into unlocking doors! Rita has coped with diverse areas such as Intern Management, Social Media management & Design of ICS material. Our ever-resourceful Bhagwan Dass has cracked the working of InterNet Servers, PACs & AERB management. He now has an enthusiastic assistant in Anuj Sharma. Vinod & Rashpal Singh are diligent moles, keeping the Office watered & fed, undertaking every kind of work from Insurance Premiums to Banking with quiet efficiency. Sushma Arora is the soft voice who welcomes all queries on the phone. Mrs. Ritu Mathur coped manfully with matching over 750 credit cards with Donor names & addresses of Cancerthon donors, while still struggling to receipt income from 2 major Events in January & March 2015.

Mr. MS Mathur is the calm presence keeping accounts in order, while Mr. OP Nayar keeps his eagle eye on admin cost.

Staff at the Cancer Detection Centre has learnt new skills – handling Computers, & now Tablets to begin the process of a paperless future! We are very proud of their step into a brave new

world! We thank Mrs. Komal Malhotra of Taurus Glocal for her patient teaching & constant monitoring of each one of the Doctors & Staff

We record appreciation of our exceptional Volunteers, and dedicated Staff, who have coped with the demands of work without (too much!) complaining! We have travelled a path “less travelled” together, & have miles to go in meeting challenges.

Conclusion

My question of the previous year still remains relevant: Who is responsible for the Health of the Nation? No other disease has to battle powerful, wealthy & deeply entrenched adversaries than Cancer. Both Big Tobacco & Big Junk Food companies are well funded 7 able to buy out the law makers.

Despite the odds – fewer Volunteers & shrinking resources, there is a public realization now that collective responsibility for factors like Food, Air Pollution, Tobacco, etc has to be owned & addressed. As Health Advocates, we understand that Awareness & Screening are the most potent tools in our arsenal; we need to get the general public to recognize that Health begins outside the Doctor’s Office, in our own homes, where unthinking individual behavior are a collective risk factor for a disease like cancer. We now need to evaluate the efficacy of our efforts, & to address & close the gaps in our working

There is no alternative to the need of keeping up with new innovations in technology and to face the challenges of new age Healthcare. The World has moved on, new age Healthcare uses Electronic Communication to reach people where a previous generation of Volunteer workers braved physical hazards to communicate the Health message. How best do we use Media to get our message across? New age Care will require speedy Reporting of Screening Tests. Tele- reporting is no longer the distant dream.

How will ICS deal with change? This is the challenge; this is the inspiration for the future.
