Annual Report 2014-2015
Dear Friends of Hillel of Silicon Valley,
Thank you for your continuing support of students and our mission: to provide a safe, secure, welcoming environment for the students of our five South Bay colleges and universities (De Anza College, Foothill College, San Jose State University, Santa Clara University and West Valley College). This has been another outstanding year for our students. More programs, more events and more ways than ever to be involved in the Jewish Community through Hillel of Silicon Valley.
Unfortunately, it has also been a challenging year for our students and our campuses. Our staff and students are increasingly facing the challenges of BDS and Students for Justice in Palestine’s anti-Israel and anti-Semitic activities. Now, perhaps more than ever, your support of Hillel SV is making a significant difference to our current students and the future of our Jewish Community. Toda Raba!
B’Shalom,
Andrew Katcher, PresidentHillel of Silicon Valley

Dear Friends,
During the 2014-15 school year, Hillel SV focused on engaging more students; expanding the breadth and depth of their Jewish experiences; and increasing the number of students engaged in experiences connecting them to Israel.
Our efforts and dedication paid off. Attendance at our events was at an all-time high, we offered varied and engaging programming, and sent students to Israel on five different programs. The energy was electric! Students spent an unprecedented amount of time at Hillel studying, chilling, cooking, and being. We offered programs practically every day except Shabbat.
We encourage students to drive programming to meet their needs and interests. As a result, students launched and led new initiatives, including a “sorority-like” Women’s Group. Students organized social, educational, and community-service activities, such as the Ask Big Questions program. Ask Big Questions, among the new programs we adopted, is designed to bring diverse students together to share their stories and learn from each other, incorporating Jewish texts.
Hillel SV collaborated with other Jewish groups to enhance programming and expand our reach. Our partnership with AEPi fraternity at San Jose State University resulted in events such as Greek Shabbats and mitzvah projects. Hillel SV hosted events with Mishelanu, a Bay Area organization for Israeli college-age students. We collaborated with NextGen to bring together Hillel students and the Young Adults Division of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley. An alumna Board member launched an alumni virtual community.
Despite the presence of anti-Israel Students for Justice in Palestine at two of our campuses, Hillel SV hosted more than 50 Israel-related events on campus, at Hillel House, and in the community. These events bring a positive understanding of Israel to Jewish students and to the greater campus community, as well as fostering support for Israel.
Hillel SV is the first connection with Jewish community for many students on the five campuses we serve (De Anza College, Foothill College, San Jose State University, Santa Clara University and West Valley College). Students often tell us they attribute their engagement in Jewish life to their experiences at Hillel SV. This engagement occurs when they are making decisions that will impact the rest of their lives. In fact, many Hillel “alums” continue their connection with the greater Jewish community upon graduation. Our work is essential to providing opportunities for students to explore the social, cultural, educational, and religious tapestries of Judaism and Israel.
Our work is possible because of your support. We look forward to your continuing investment in delivering the Jewish future!

Hillel of Silicon Valley is very pleased that this year through the great generosity of our donors we have met our fundraising goals and increased our endowment. We enjoyed a surplus from operations due to unfilled staff positions that our current staff diligently covered. We are pleased to announce that we are fully staffed for the coming year, which will allow
our staff to continue to provide support to our students while pursuing fundraising possibilities. Thank you to our wonderful donors’ continued financial support, which enables our fabulous staff and student leaders to fulfill our Mission and provide fun and enriching programs for our student community.
