2014 was a year of looking inward and working on foundational parts of the organization including a brand new website and a major re-branding endeavor. We are very happy with the new look and have gone from The Abundance Foundation to Abundance NC. The reason for the change in name is that many folks were confused. They would come to us seeking funding. We are actually a 501c3 that depends on donations to run our programs and we felt our mission was unclear to the public. We hope you enjoy the new website. Local economy is a big part of what we do. One of our programs, Slow Money NC, has been matching lenders and borrowers for 4 years. We are proud of the good work done by Carol Hewitt and her volunteers. To date she has facilitated 130+ loans, with over 100+ lenders, and 63 local food enterprises. Slow Money NC has put over 1.2 million into peer-to-peer lending for projects that would not qualify for conventional financing.

Abundance brought Cafeteria Man to town at the beginning of 2014. We had a fabulous gathering of 150 extremely passionate local food activists and school system nutrition professionals. A heated discussion ensued. It let us know that we were on the right track. Abundance decided to take a higher level with the school system and we put our efforts on collaborating with other organizations to create a

county Food Council. The mission of this council is to bring all the different puzzle pieces together around our local foodshed. This is “bigger picture” work and will take longer before impact, but we think it will be worth it.

Sometimes working on change involves working on our selves. In 2014 I took a 2 month sabbatical to do just that. The Abundance Staff took the lead while I journeyed across the United States alone in a blue VW bus. Seeing our country and different cities and towns gave me newfound respect and appreciation for the community that we have right here. I came back fired up to continue the work on local food and renewable energy. Most importantly, I came back to work with YOU.

You are why we are here. You are the folks that attend our workshops, our festivals, conferences and events. The runners that come to our 5K benefit, the volunteers that selflessly put on Pepper Festival and come out of the wood work when we need help. There are thousands of you and we couldn’t be more grateful.

We have a lot of stories to tell and still more stories which we want to hear.

With gratitude and abundance

A highlight of 2014 was the Farm Aid concert held in Raleigh. Our friends at Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) played an instrumental role in bringing this renowned concert to town. Farm Aid benefits small farmers across the nation. We were thrilled to be asked to put on a workshop since we have been putting on amazing unique workshops since 2009. We thought we could do a seed saving workshop or perhaps how to grow mushrooms, or maybe a lesson in how to make biodiesel. What they really wanted was friendship bracelets. Yes, those little anklets and bracelets made from fiber. Evidently that is what gets concert-goers jazzed. We spoke to our friend Linda Booker about getting hemp since we believe in that fiber becoming a part of our local agriculture. Tons of colored hemp was ordered and volunteers showed up to help us teach people how to weave the bracelets. A huge rush of adults and children came to the tent to get the right colors of hemp to make the perfect friendship bracelet. For about 60 minutes, we had the most intense time distributing and teaching the hoards of Farm Aid enthusiasts. Just as soon as we could take a breath, it was over. And we had the happiest people move off to enjoy the music. It was a job well done. It felt just as important as learning how to can tomatoes or make kombucha. The 2014 DIY Workshop Series was one of the best yet. For a list of them all, please check http://abundancenc.org/what-we-do/diy-sustainability-workshops/past-workshops/

Our third Annual Climate Adaptation Conference went off without a hitch. The team put together a wonderful cast of speakers with keynote Peter Bane, publisher of Permaculture Activist. His presentation resonated with the standing room only crowd. We’ll need to find larger accommodations as this conference grows. Will Hooker lead us in a Pink Party Bus the day before the conference on a farm tour. Two successful farms were featured: Whitted Bowers

biodynamic farm and Ken Dawson’s Maple Spring Gardens. The tourists braved the cold and wind, and of course, our farmers have to be brave every single day.

Another successful “Amuse Bouche” event at Fearrington Barn gave us just a taste of the day to come. Hosted by WUNC’s Frank Stasio with panelists, Judy Lessler, Scott Marlow, Tucker Withington, Peter Bane and Amy Knisely. They spoke to many of the issues we have with

adaptation, our global food system and local food issues.

The day of the conference was filled with connections, lots of practical information, good will and a lot of hope going forward. The answer always points to “the power of me” and “the power of us”. As long as we work together, share information, and keep learning, we will be able to knit resilience into our community.

Abundance NC is known for being fleet of foot, spontaneous and a little quirky. 2014 was no different. We brought people together in celebration over and over again. One thing we know how to do is throw a party. And it seems that most things are just a party in disguise. Have a planning meeting? It’s really a gathering of like minded people….a party. Have a serious issue that needs solving? Create a conference which is all about people, conversations, ideas, food and drink. Why not throw in some music and dance?

We think that most things can be fun and that work is really play. This year we collaborated with SEEDS of Durham and Benevolence Farm to work on the INDY GIVE GUIDE project. It was decided that Drag Bingo would be the best focus for our fundraiser and we packed Full Steam Brewery for one of the most unforgettable nights of the year. The crowds kept

coming and we ran out of bingo cards. The Drag Queens kept everyone in stitches with their performances. A good time was had by all. Money was made for the good work of these organizations that work on sustainable agriculture education.

The point is that good things happen when folks gather. We have a sense of humor and people just want to have fun, even while doing the serious work. Join us for a Pecha Kucha, a Drink ’N Think mixology and history workshop or one of the many other events that Abundance creates.

Our  Youth  Sustainability  Educa4on  program  keeps  ge:ng  be;er  and  more  meaningful.    With  an  addi4on  of  eco-‐spirituality  this  year,  the  kids  became  more  thoughAul  about  their  own  part  in  the  healing  of  this  earth.

Once  again,  with  inten4on  and  connec4on,  the  learning  happens,  the  lightbulbs  go  on  and  the  young  pliable  minds  leave  with  a  different  idea  of  how  they  can  plug  into  the  environmental  movement.    “I  learned  more  today  than  I  did  the  whole  year  from  my  environmental  class  at  school”  one  student  said.      Hearing  real  stories  from  people  working  in  the  field  makes  a  huge  difference  with  the  educa4on  process.      Students  learn  about  renewable  energy,  sustainable  agriculture,  honeybees,  cooking,  spirit,  green  building  and  local  economy  and  more.  Abundance  hosted  240  youth  in  2014.

Pickards  Mountain  Eco-‐Institute  held  their

second  year  of  the  Odyssey  Fellowship  Program.    Created  for  youth  who  are

seeking  a  life  of  purpose  working  towards

a  sustainable  future  for  all.    There  are  3

sessions  a  year  and  youth  learn  everything

from  permaculture  to  herbal  medicines  to

In 2006, we began Abundance with $22,700 in revenue. Almost 10 years later we are up to $510,062. Funding comes from very diverse sources, a few family foundations, many registrations for workshops and conferences, and a huge amount of individual giving. At this time there is no state or federal funding and we think that is a strength.

Abundance oversees three other organizations on top of our programs; Pickards Mountain Eco Institute (revenues of $274,872), Slow Money NC (revenues of $33,377) and Bee Downtown (revenues of $14,910). All organizations doing fabulous work in sustainability, environmental education and local economy. You can read about their work in other parts of this report. For a complete

list of annual reports and 990 tax forms and other fun financial information, please check out our website: http://abundancenc.org/about/annual-reports-and-990s/
