First open to the public in 1959, The Westmoreland Museum of American Art was established through a generous bequest from Mary Marchand Woods, a long-time resident of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, who wanted her community to have an important cultural institution. Located just 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, The Westmoreland is the only museum dedicated to American art in western Pennsylvania and one of only three in the state. With an extraordinary permanent collection from historical to contemporary, the Museum represents the full spectrum of American art with major works by our country’s most notable artists. The Museum is also known for its significant collection of works by southwestern Pennsylvania artists created to record the industrial spectacle of Pittsburgh’s Big Steel era. As a complement to the permanent collection, The Westmoreland offers an impressive schedule of temporary exhibitions of American art—both nationally-travelling and those organized in house.

Propelled by a major renovation and expansion, which was nearing completion at the end of the 2014–2015 fiscal year, as well as the addition of multiple significant gifts of art to the collection, The Westmoreland has truly become a museum of national stature. The Museum’s new LEED-certified addition of over 13,000 square feet features a dynamic cantilevered design along with a stunning view of the City of Greensburg and the Laurel Highlands beyond. New surrounding indigenous gardens offer public gathering areas, site-specific art, and walkways that connect neighborhoods and the downtown business district with the Museum. The New Westmoreland also has more pathways to engagement than ever before through a focus on community-oriented programming and the introduction of new educational spaces, including the Center for Creative Connections, a place for hands on learning for visitors of all ages.
