Dear Friends,It gives us great pleasure to once again thank you for your support and encouragement over the past year. We are very fortunate to have generous supporters like you to help make skiing and boarding possible in Southern Oregon.

The 2014-15 ski season was a challenge. Of course, we were happy to be able to open the ski area at all! We operated for 38 days. In December, we opened the ski area for the first time in two years to much fanfare. We were able to use our new parking lot and enhanced beginner terrain on the Sonnet run. Unfortunately, we lost our snow pack after a few weeks and closed the ski area for most of January. On February 7, we unexpectedly received over a foot of snow. Within 24 hours, we had our crew back and opened the ski area again. So many smiling faces!

We were able to remain open for a number of weeks thanks to the dedication of our amazing crew. We now own a “Dump Cat,” which enabled us to move snow from around the mountain to our base area each night. Ultimately, we had to close down again in March because we received so much rain that the snowpack was lost in most of our base area. Many supporters came up on Bavarian Night so that we could be together one last time. We had a lovely bonfire with fireworks and put the ski area away for the year.

Our community recognized Mt. Ashland’s challenges and stepped forward in a big way this year. We launched our Local Mountain Fund campaign in July and supporters like you chipped in to help. To-date, we have received nearly $400,000 to help make sure Mt. Ashland could open for the 2015-16 ski season. Contributions both large and small have poured in all year. We simply cannot thank you enough for this.

With donations helping to support operations through the summer and fall, our crew has been hard at work making improvements. Despite having a smaller crew than in years’ past, we have made big headway on some much-needed projects.

Because of you, we are stronger and better. We not only survived the last few years, but we’ve made improvements and, most importantly, protected our assets.

Thanks again for all that you do to help Mt. Ashland.

Building CommunityIn 2014, the Mt. Ashland Association undertook a number of new programs designed to help the organization better serve the Southern Oregon and Northern California Community. Our goal was to find new partnerships and alliances that would benefit local youth in addition to reaching out to new, underserved communities. These new programs included:

• The SKI HOPPER Shuttle, providing affordable and reliable transportation to and from the ski area three days per week. We also started offering Carload Mondays to encourage carpooling.

• Get the Girls Out Day to celebrate women skiers, in partnership with the SheJumps organization.

• Collaborating with STOKE Certified to undergo a sustainability assessment and build a roadmap to success.

• Work with our friends at the U.S. Forest Service to investigate a summer operations plan.

• Our Siskiyou Outdoor Alpine Recreation (SOAR) program, which includes SnowScience courses, our After School Youth Ski & Snowboard Education Program, and youth SOAR Camp in summer.

As with many of our existing services, much of the work developing these programs was hindered by a lack of snow during last ski season. However, our Board and staff continue to build and grow these programs and you will be hearing much more about them in the coming years.

Mt. Ashland AssociationFounded in 1993

a community-focused ski area operated by a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing an outstanding alpine recreation experience for people of all ages and skill levels. As an asset to the community, we remain true to our core values: it is a local ski hill with great snow, exciting terrain, providing access to a diverse alpine environment and a fun family atmosphere.

Mt. Ashland Is…

Our Promise Is…to remain a cherished community resource for generations to come. Mt. Ashland is most effective when it serves local residents and visitors alike, making them all feel welcome and that the moun-tain is their own. As an important member of the Southern Oregon community, we always strive to do better to provide enjoyment for the whole family, develop strategic partnerships, and care for our alpine environment.

To enhance the visitor experience we promise to manage the ski area with guest service as our top priority. Because our terrain balance favors more experienced skiers and boarders, our goal is to help newcomers progress and develop the skills needed to negotiate our terrain. Our ski area provides adventures for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. Each guest is seeking a different experience and we are dedicated to doing our best to ensure the visitor experience is enjoyable at every level.

Protecting Our AssetsIn the spring of 2015, we made a plan of action to ensure that our ski area undergoes a regular series of maintenance tasks. After a dismal ski season, we were not sure how much we could accomplish, but with the help of our wonderful community (See Local Mountain Fund), we accomplished much. We have recently completed the following projects:

• Main Lodge, Ariel Motor Room and Rental Shop roofs were repaired and re-sealed.

• Replacement of the Bar Deck to prevent water leaks.

• Windsor Tower 4 head assembly replacement and alignment.

• Ski run maintenance on the Bottom, Balcony, Romeo, Juliet, Avon, Fallstaff, Dream and Windsor Chairline runs.

• New deck system to enable use of the Sonnet lift during low-snow conditions.

• Dozens of erosion control measures improved and maintained.

• New phone system, Lodge wireless internet service upgrades, new HD Webcam, and newly updated website.

Local Mountain FundIn June, we launched our Local Mountain Fund Campaign to help Mt. Ashland improve and enhance our ski area. The name is a play on our new tagline, “Local Mountain Fun.” Our goals were to improve our existing facilities, perform maintenance, and prepare for the possibility of more challenging winter seasons.

With generous support from our community, the organization built a cash reserve to be prepared for major in-season repairs and more low-snow winters. The Sonnet ski lift ramp was upgraded so very little snow will be needed to run it. Several roofs were repaired and the concrete decks around the Lodge were repaired and sealed to stop the leaks. Trails were trimmed to make them safer and

easier to open in the event of low snow conditions.

As of November 2015, we have received nearly $400,000 in donations through the Local Mountain Fund Campaign. Mt. Ashland has been amazed by the generous support it has received this year. The improvements enable the ski area to be open more often, which generates more revenue. The improvements also protect our assets. This helps the organization become more financially sustainable. With these important updates under our belt, we can move on to more exciting additions in the years to come.

Thank you!

Historically, donors have provided about 11% of

Mt. Ashland’s income. For the past two years, this ratio has

been much higher.

Ski Area Improvements

Our newly-rigged “Dump Cat” (above) helped us with snow farming to remain open last season. We have made repairs to ensure it will be on-hand again this year (left). Numerous leaks in the Lodge (below) allowed water in, which is bad for the building and equipment stored inside. We patched up several places and re-surfaced the Bar Deck with a fresh slab of conrete. The pictures below-left were taken at the same spot.

Ski Area Improvements

The top photos show our guys hard at work repairing Windsor Tower 4. The lift was down for repairs two weekend days in 2015. These repairs will ensure it remains in operation through the following ski seasons. The photos of the Sonnet lift show the new low-snow deck that will enable us to use the lift even in low-snow conditions. The photo at left shows the “Mini Glade” on the Bottom Run. After a number of years, the vege-tation was pruned to enable the ski area to safely operate in low-snow conditions. We carefully pruned each tree and shrub to ensure it would not die but grow horizontally.

Circe (pronounced seer-see) is the name of a mythological sorcerer. It’s also the name of one of our most iconic ski runs – giving skiers and riders access to our world-class Bowl. Members of our Circe Society are providing essential support to Mt. Ashland – and enabling us to provide access to our outstanding terrain year-in and year-out.
