From the Chairman

As a Belgian tourist I was blessed to have visited the Volta Region in May 2007. Since that time I used to visit Kpando every year and together with some Belgian volunteers we raised funds through the Belgian organization Support Ghana. Our aim is to help the disadvantaged young ones and deprived communities in and around Kpando. I am very happy that some of the yought we helped up till now, were inspired to start the new Emo Foundation NGO in Kpando with the same vision and mission as their Belgian partner Support Ghana. It is a privilege for me to help these youngsters to start up this NGO and to provide them with the necessary funds the next five to ten years in order to give them some time to organize themselves so that they can continue to reach our mutual objectives. In this first annual report you will find out more of our new NGO. I want to thank all who made the start of Emo Foundation NGO possible. Luc Somers

1. Education

1.1. Construction 6 class rooms primary school Gadza

Since 2013 we started to help the Gadza community to build six class rooms for the new primary school. In 2015 we managed to make 2.000 cement blocks and we raised the walls of all the class rooms. Also we build a new urinal.

1.2. Renovation and extension primary school Dafor

In Dafor we helped the local school to renovate the roof of the Kindergarten building that was destructed after a storm. Also we contributed to the roof of the extension that will be used as Class 6.

1.3. Scholarships

A lot of young ones in Kpando don’t have sufficient financial support to further their education at Senior High or Tertiary level. In 2015 we provided:

- 7 scholarships for Tertiary level education o 2 Physician Assistant at Presby University Agogo o 2 Teacher training at St Francis o 1 Chemistry at UCC Cape Coast o 1 Nursing training at Ho o 1 Bachelor of Science in supply and purchasing at Koforidua

- 7 students were helped at Secondary schools (Kpasec, Anfoesec, St Mary’s) - 6 students were paid for their fees at Kpantech - 4 students were helped at JHS level

2. Apprentiship and start up

Not all young ones have the capacity to finish school and in order to give them some support to find a job we helped two boys to apprentiship and to obtain their certificate (one welding, one glass). Two other ones went to driving school to obtain an official driver’s license. Three other young ones were provided with some seed money to buy some cows in order to start a cattle farm in future. In July 2015 a Belgian volunteer helped these start-up’s to do a regular bookkeeping in order to follow up the profitability of their new business.

3. Health Care and Social Welfare

3.1. Health Care

A wound care project was organized in collaboration with five nurses from Belgium. The program was organized to cater for the people within and around Kpando who have wounds that need attention or special care. The main aim of the program was to help people with either acute or chronic wounds to facilitate the healing of the wounds. The program was carried out under three main approaches, 1. Visit to schools (Nuaridini, Gadza, Agudzi and Dafor) for students with wounds. 2. Visit to communities (Debidebi, Bumbula, islands of Dzidzorkpo and Gabikpo) to meet patients from nearby villages gathered at a particular place for wound care. 3. Visit to patients with serious cases at their various houses daily. Patients whose wounds couldn't complete the healing process before the end of the program were also taken into consideration as people close to them who are capable of helping them with taking care of the wounds were equipped and trained to do so. In general, the program will be described as interesting and successful as most of the patients had their wounds closed before the end of the program. Besides the woundcare program we also helped out a Hepatitis B patient and others to provide hospital care and medicins. We also stimulated some of our members to affiliate with the NHIS.

3.2. Social Welfare

Some of the students we help have no support at all from their parents or families. In order to help them to concentrate on their education we also provide them with lodging and some food stuffs for the period they are at school. In return they help with the programs of Emo Foundation NGO.

4. Sports

Our partner Support Ghana started with organizing sports in 2008 and since stimulating sports is still one of our objectives. The budget spent on sports is not that much, but besides sponsorship of some local sports clubs like Keep Fit we also organized sports events such as a table tennis tournament at Zongo and a friendly football match at the sports stadium. We also provide the local sports clubs with materials such as footballs, table tennis items, basketballs, football boots and jerseys.

Table tennis at Zongo Support local Craftsmen

5. Culture

The Ghanaian Culture is very rich with dance, music, storytelling, local craftsmen (woodcarvers, pottery, batik, kente weaving, …). We want to help the local culture to be maintained and support the Desiadenyo Culture Troupe at Torkor and also buy at shops from local craftsmen. Also we donated a set of drums to the newly formed Blinks Culture Troupe at Kpando.

6. Visitors and volunteers In order to be self-sufficient in future we started to offer a program for volunteers to guide tourists and visitors in Volta Region.

6.1. Emo House

We rented a house at Kpando Gabi South near the stadium and close to the market. This house is our office and also has some rooms to accommodate volunteers from our Belgian partners.

6.2. Volunteers

In 2015 we got visit of volunteers and managed to prepare a program for all in and around Kpando. Our aim is to offer them a program that is useful for the local communities. In 2015 we mainly focused on woundcare programs. Also we prepared the arrival of some internship students from the Belgian Teacher Training College KdG (Karel de Grote High School).

6.3. Guiding visitors

The Volta region around Kpando offers a lot of touristic attractions (Lake Volta, waterfalls, mountain villages, cultural heritage, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, …). The past years we manages to make some local maps with all the places of interest and started some website http://infokpando.blogspot.com with all kind of usefull information for potential visitors. In 2015 we guided some visitors and two groups of the Belgian tourist organization Joker.
