MESSAGE FROM 4-H ALBERTA
2016 -2017 A YEAR OF ACTIONWhat a year! 2017 marked 4-H Alberta’s 100th birthday and it truly delivered a wonderful selection of Centennial celebrations across the Province, culminating in our event in Olds, the birthplace of 4-H in Alberta. What a great series of events, made possible by tireless volunteers, leaders, members and sponsors as we looked back over 100 years of 4-H and the history, experiences and rich memories and events which have been brought to our organization and our Province. It reminds us all of the strength and quality of our 4-H program reflected in the tremendous longevity of our Organization. Something to be proud of and to celebrate.
Against this backdrop, the 4-H Council of Alberta, the 4-H Section of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, and the 4-H Foundation of Alberta worked closely together over the year to build and deliver a long-term Strategic Plan. The first of its kind for 4-H in Alberta, the Plan was built based on member and survey feedback, staff engagement, and facilitated planning sessions. We concluded our work with a final review and feedback process to help chart a strategic course for the partner organizations and to jointly plan and collaborate as we deliver and support the 4-H program across the Province. Through this process, increased understanding of opportunities, strengths and challenges to our organization were identified, analyzed and incorporated into the Plan, providing stronger alignment and collaborative energy for the three partner organizations to deliver the 4-H program for years to come.
Challenges within Alberta’s economy continued to play a a role this year. While we are extremely fortunate to have a
dedicated group of key sponsors, financial constraints have impacted levels of support. We continue to identify new Sponsors who, like us, share a passion for 4-H and its Members and have come on board to provide much needed financial support for the Program. As we continue to deliver the amazing 4-H program in Alberta, we want to once again thank our corporate partners for all their passion and support for 4-H over the years.
As the Management Committee for 4-H, we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize the tremendous efforts of all staff over the past year. We often take time to recognize the strength and passion of our Volunteers, Leaders and Members but we recognize that it is also through the combined efforts of our staff within the three partner organizations that all the work gets done in providing programming, member support, event planning, fundraising, scholarships and so much more. To our staff – a big “Thank You”.
As the Management Committee, you can expect that we will continue to provide our time, effort and passion in supporting the strategic direction of 4-H Alberta. We will also continue to work together to drive towards the most effective and efficient structure which provides the engine for a strong and vibrant 4-H Alberta for years and decades to come. We remain committed to delivering the best 4-H program for our members, leaders and volunteers while being responsible and efficient with all our resources.
Keith Luft, Chair, 4-H Foundation of AlbertaOn Behalf of the 4-H Alberta Management Committee

4-H ALBERTA CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
OUR ORGANIZATION
2017 saw 4-H Alberta celebrate its centennial anniversary and throughout the province 4-H’ers, both past and present, celebrating an organization that has given so much, to so many. 4-H in Alberta began in 1917 as a method to share new and current agriculture practices with families new to the industry and country, through their children as change agents. Through 100 years 4-H continues to develop outstanding future community leaders and citizens, inspire and empower youth to reach their potential, and is one component of ensuring rural Alberta stays a strong, vibrant, contributing part of the province’s landscape.
Celebrations took part throughout the province
CENTENNIAL KICK-OFF4-H Alberta was excited to launch its centennial celebration in grand style on November 9 at Farmfair International inEdmonton. We plan to paint Alberta 4-H Green in 2017 to mark 100 years of 4-H in this province. The Centennial “Kick Off” isjust us getting started. In addition to a multitude of dignitaries in attendance, the Kick Off showcased the provincial initiativesthat will highlight our milestone – and there was enough birthday cake for everyone! A highlight of the Kick-Off event includeda live performance from Alberta’s own country music artist, Blake Reid. 4-H Alberta is beyond pleased to announce therelease of our new 4-H song to celebrate 100 years. Titled, Room To Grow the song perfectly captures why 4-H is an integralpart of Alberta’s rural and agriculture roots.
WESTERN REGIONAL 4-H LEADERS’ FORUM (WRLF)For the very first time in its history, the Western Regional 4-H Leaders’ Forum (WRLF) was hosted outside of the United States. For March 16-18, approximately 450 adult 4-H leaders and teen 4-H members from 16 states and four provinces gathered at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton to participate in WRLF 2017. With a focus on community, opportunity, leadership, and, of course, friendship, all participants took part in sessions, facilitated conversations, and networking opportunities designed to help them strengthen their own rural communities across the United States and Canada.

4-H CENTENNIAL FEVERFrom August 4-6, 2017, with 100 years under our belt, past, present and future 4-Hers returned to the birthplace of the program to reminisce, reunite and, most importantly, celebrate the past century.
4-Hers are no stranger to Olds, Alberta. Throughout the years, the town has played host to many different 4-H events. Members, parents and leaders alike have made the trip to the town countless times for various different livestock shows, events and programs.
In fact, 4-H Alberta’s history in Olds dates all the way back to 1917 when W. J. Elliott established the first club for boys and girls in Alberta: the Olds Junior Pig Club. Now, 100 years later, 4-H is still going strong.

PROJECT ACTIVITIESEvery member undertakes a 4-H project, but many choose to take on multiple projects – the reason why we have over 10,000 registered projects for the year but roughly half that many members. Members manage and track their project start to finish, with the project culminating at their Achievement Activity.

CLUB ACTIVITIESTypically, 4-H clubs are most active between October and June. In this time, they conduct their club meetings, workshops and clinics, committee work, communications activity, community service activity, social events and fundraising activities.
COMMUNICATIONS ACTIVITYCommunicating with confidence is one of the most valuable and marketable skills gained through 4-H involvement. Therefore, each 4-H member prepares and delivers a club approved communications activity each 4-H year. The majority of members participate in their club competition, with the potential to move onto the district, regional or even the 4-H Alberta Provincial Communications Competition, in either the public speaking or the presentations stream.
4-H ALBERTA MEMBERS SHINE AT CYSA COMPETITION
The winner of the 4-H Alberta Provincial Public Speaking Competition is awarded the opportunity to travel to theCanadian Young Speakers for Agriculture (CYSA)
that takes place annually at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. Senior 4-H Alberta members have captured the top honors at the contest for three years running. November 5, 2016 - Spencer Graling, St. Paul 4-H Multi Club.
COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY4-H Alberta highly encourages clubs to choose a Community Service Activity that involves members giving time and energy in service of their community. The activity cannot be of financial benefit to the club or individual, unless funds raised through the members’ service are donated to a charitable cause. Over the course of this year, 4-H clubs in Alberta took part in 78 activities and dedicated over 1300 hours of their time to providing service in communities throughout the province.
PROVINCIAL EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES4-H Alberta offers a huge variety of events and opportunities for our members. These include, but are not limited to: camps, senior member personal development programs, livestock events, competitions, travel and leadership opportunities, province wide fundraising opportunities, scholarships and awards.
CAMPS, PROGRAMS AND COMPETITIONS4-H camps, programs and competitions focus on developing self-confidence, teamwork, interpersonal and leadership skills. Whether it’s a summer camp built around having a blast in the great outdoors, a program that helps youth take ownership of their choices and their future, or a combinationof the two that allows them to find their own entrepreneurial spirit and take pride in their achievements, 4-H programs provide the meaningful experiences every child deserves.
