Vice President’s Report
Greetings everyone!
It has been a very busy yet special year for Sakya Losal Choe
Dzong. We have successfully run our yearly calendar of events
that was enthusiastically prepared and well attended on all
counts. We organised many events through the year at numerous
locations across Australia, ranging from retreats, workshops and
free public talks. These events are a great way to spread the
values of these teachings to people outside Canberra. In addition,
we hosted special events for Tibetan New year, various Buddhist
holy days and even my wedding to the lovely Yue-i. With all the encouragement you have given
us, I am sure our marriage will be a blessed and successful one.
This past year was especially joyous as the Society had the opportunity to celebrate the 20th
Year of Rongton Buddhist Training College, the Buddhist education curriculum founded and still
led by our Spiritual Director, Lama Choedak Rinpoche. It is through this college that thousands
of people have attended beginner meditation courses, attended retreats and engaged in the
wonderful Buddhist teachings. Rongton Buddhist Training College has touched many lives and
has is a continued source of wisdom for all those who attend its activities. On behalf of the
committee, we thank Rinpoche and all those people who have been involved in making Rongton
prosper. There are too many of you to name but the society owes you a great debt.
In addition, this past year marked the 20th annual 10 day Calm Abiding meditation retreat.
Linked to the success of Rongton, the society’s ability to continually offer this amazing retreat is
cause for great celebration. Having attended many of these retreats myself, I have experienced
the life-changing effects they have, both on myself and witnessing others attending. Coinciding
with this celebration was the 10 year anniversary of the society opening SIBA retreat centre in
East Gippsland, Victoria. An ambitious purchase 10 years ago with much hard work and
generous donations has allowed the society to run an array of healing and restorative retreats at
this secluded, peaceful venue. We again thank the many co-ordinators, cooks, helpers and other
people involved in keeping SIBA such a beautiful place to be. Again, too numerous to name,
know that the committee is very grateful!
Looking forward, of particular cause for enthusiasm about the incoming year is the Society’s
acquisition of a Land Grant from the ACT government to build a new temple. Named The Stupa
Temple of Peace, our Sub-Committee has been working diligently to acquire this piece of land.
Having received it only 2 days ago, our volunteer base can begin our ambitious fundraising
efforts, beginning with our website, promotional materials and informing our members. We
acknowledge the kindness and hard work of the ACT government and all those in the sub-
committee. May your hard work continue unabated!
With many warm wishes, Jampal (Nick) Peyton

Lama Choedak Rinpoche’s Report
A very warm welcome to you all reading this Annual Report. I
would like to thank everyone in the committee, residents of
the centres and all members who have participated in our
weekly sessions, meditation classes, philosophy classes,
various workshops, monthly committee meetings and those
who cooked the countless meals over the past year. These
are an integral part of your commitment to the Society and to
me these activities are our spiritual practices. Being patient
and showing kindness to each other are fundamentals of all
activities. I especially thank those who have stayed on the committee for many years where we
all get to know each other and remain committed to work together and support the teachings.
I have maintained my teaching visits to our sister centres across Australia and New Zealand.
They all have weekly programs for meditation classes, practice sessions, support for local
members and new people who are interested in Buddhism and meditation. One newest group is
led by Ross in Sale, East Gippsland where I visited twice in the last 12 months. Lidija has started
teaching meditation in the city and Evan, Penny and Elise Maree, having completed ‘Train the
Trainer’ and started leading Sunday sessions. Thanks to Joseph, who co-ordinates all the Sunday
sessions. Jampal-la conducted Calm Abiding meditation weekend in March in SIBA as I had to go
to India. Tharchin co-ordinates the Vajrayogini Tsog practice. Joerg takes care of Evatt and
radiates goodness. Thank you to all of you who work so hard to help others.
This year we saw several people successfully complete solitary retreats at VRC. They include
Ven. Tsultim-la from Brisbane and Mani from Adelaide. Several members are also silently doing
prostration retreats at home. In November, we also celebrated Lhabab Duechen with Mongolian
yurts and received many Tibetan visitors for the 20th anniversary of the founding of Rongton
Buddhist College, and also held the 20th 10 Day Calm Abiding meditation retreat which coincided
with on the 10th anniversary of SIBA Retreat Centre.
This year we also have hosted the visits of Khenpo Tsultim Lodro from Larung Gar Institute in
Sichuan and Lama Dupsing Rinpoche from Pokhara. Many of us attended a peace conference
hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Organisation in Albert Hall. The Archbishop of Canberra and
Goulburn hosted a special lunch for leaders of the various faiths in Canberra which I and Norbu
attended. Twenty two members of our centres, including young Alex, attended the
Enthronement Ceremony of the 42nd Sakya Trizin in India last March, where our group led by
Greg sang and performed the Song of Four Immeasurables. 6000 people attended the 3 day
celebration in a gala fashion, providing free accommodation and food for all the participants.
Thanks to Rachel for co-ordinating this trip. I had the honour to do the translation of the
inaugural teachings given by HH Ratna Vajra Rinpoche at that event. One student, a very bright
man named Alex is due to receive Bhikhu ordination in Nepal any time next week, in Saka Dawa.
May all be well and happy! Lama Choedak Rinpoche

Background to the Society Sakya Losal Choe Dzong Tibetan Buddhist Society of Canberra (SLCD) is a not for profit religious
organization that has come from humble beginnings in 1989 to consistently and actively
promoting Buddhism in the Canberra community and around Australia. Thanks to the
committed and diligent Spiritual Directorship of Lama Choedak Rinpoche supported by a
confident and enthusiastic executive committee and volunteer base, our Society has earned a
reputation as a friendly and welcoming community offering a variety of rich, authentic and
inclusive Buddhist teachings.
SLCD has been hosting its Canberra classes and events at Rongton Buddhist College, 25
Alderman St, Evatt, which we have rented for more than twenty-five years.
SLCD owns Virupa Retreat Centre, located 20 minutes outside Canberra, and SIBA Retreat
Centre in East Gippsland, Victoria. Purchased in 2002 and 2006 respectively, these are both well
appointed and beautiful retreat centres situated in conducive environments where many of our
members and friends are able to do group and personal retreats. They have been embraced by
the Buddhist community and have flourished. Thousands of people have attended and received
many blessings and benefits from the activity of our centres.
Generous donations from benefactors and interest free loans from members helped us acquire
each of these retreat centres. With good public interest in our program of events and retreats
continuing, we have had a successful and happy 2016-2017 financial year.
Lama Choedak Rinpoche Lama Choedak Rinpoche is a Tibetan Buddhist Meditation master and Spiritual Director of SLCD.
As a young monk, he undertook rigorous training in philosophy and meditation under the close
guidance of some of Tibet’s great masters. He completed a three year solitary meditation
retreat sponsored by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He came to Canberra in 1988 to do
postgraduate studies at the ANU, however, as a qualified Tibetan lama he soon drew the
attention of those keen to learn meditation practices and Buddhist philosophy. Since then he
has performed a full-time role as a Buddhist teacher helping the diverse spiritual needs and
growth amongst Australia’s community.
Rinpoche is now an internationally acknowledged Buddhist teacher, public figure and popular
speaker whose teachings are renowned for their clarity, authenticity, richness and humour. He
conducts weekly meditation and philosophy classes in Canberra and travels interstate most
weekends, giving public talks and teachings, and conducting workshops and retreats.
Under guidance and inspiration from Lama Choedak Rinpoche our Society has invited some of
the most important lineage heads and famous teachers of Tibetan Buddhism including His late
Eminence Choegye Trichen Rinpoche, His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin and His Holiness Ratna
Vajra Rinpoche to teach and attend SLCD’s events.

SIBA Retreat Centre
Sakya International Buddhist Academy (SIBA) is a beautiful and friendly Buddhist retreat centre
in the Snowy River country of East Gippsland, Victoria. It was founded by Lama Choedak
Rinpoche and formally opened and consecrated by His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche in
2006. During this time, His Eminence gave the centre a Tibetan name Tsarchen Choeling.
There is a year-round varied programme of retreats, some led by Lama Choedak Rinpoche and
some by resident or guest teachers. Some of these include:
• Calm Abiding Meditation - each year Lama Choedak Rinpoche leads a four-day retreat
during the March Labour Day holiday (VIC) and a ten day retreat late September/early
October which is our most popular retreat of the year.
• White Tara - a beautiful meditation for developing kindness and compassion, increasing
spiritual vitality and overcoming fears, run every Australia Day holiday week.
• Health and Wellness – a retreat where people can revitalise mind and body through
yoga, meditation and alternative health practitioner consultations every Easter holiday.
• Tai Chi and Meditation - Tai Chi Academy of Canberra present the teachings and practice
of moving and sitting meditation, held every April.
• Nyung-ne – a special devotional meditation practices lead by Lama Choedak Rinpoche
which combines daily practices with the Eight Buddhist Precepts. This is every May and
is a free retreat offered by SIBA.
• Medicine Buddha - Lama Choedak Rinpoche helps people discover the connection
between wholesome thoughts, your health and happiness, held every August.
• One-month Ngondro - Lama Choedak leads this intensive group and individual
meditation practice, with sessions focused on establishing the preliminary practice of
Tibetan Buddhism. This is held every November-December.
• Yoga – We are lucky enough to have visiting Yoga teachers from across Victoria and
Australia several times a year. These yoga retreats are very popular and expose people
to the wonders of the retreat centre without needing to be Buddhist practitioners.

Virupa Retreat Centre
A picturesque and peaceful property, Virupa Retreat Centre is located high on the hills of the
Bungendore valley with magnificent views of Canberra’s southern mountain ranges. There is a
consecrated Buddhist shrine room where regular practices are conducted by residents and
various retreats run annually.
Since its opening in 2002, Virupa has been blessed to have been visited by most of the major
International teachers of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, including His Eminence
Chogye Trichin Rinpoche, His Holiness Sakya Trizin, His Eminence Luding Khenchen Rinpoche,
and Her Eminence Sakya Jetsun Chimey
Luding Rinpoche. Visits from these very
famous practitioners are inspiring for all
the Buddhist faithful who attend the
centre.
This centre also houses the complete canon
of the Tibetan Buddhist scriptures, with
editions of the Kangyur and Tengyur
preserved in Tibetan language. This
collection is one of the few of its kind in
Australia. This makes Virupa a valuable part
of Australia’s Tibetan Buddhist landscape.

Other Activities • Biennial Pilgrimage to Nepal and India – 20 pilgrims accompanied Lama Choedak for the
three week international pilgrimage in December 2016. Rinpoche takes pilgrims across
India, Nepal and Tibet. As he has lived in all three of these countries and speaks all the
native languages used in these countries, he is the perfect guide for pilgrims from all
over the world.
• We received many Tibetan visitors for the 20th anniversary of the founding of Rongton
Buddhist College, held at Virupa in early October
• We celebrated the 20th 10 Day Calm Abiding meditation retreat, which coincided with
the 10th anniversary of opening SIBA Retreat Centre. Many old members came from all
across Australia to celebrate SIBA’s success.
• In November, we celebrated the special Buddhist day Lhabab Duechen with the building
of Mongolian yurts.
• Lama Choedak Rinpoche was asked to speak on behalf of Australian Buddhists at the
Interfaith Peace Symposium, hosted by Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Canberra on 19
November 2016.
• We hosted more than 5 school groups across the year, teaching them about Buddhism,
secular ethics and Tibetan culture.
• The continued publication and sale of audio teachings and Buddhist books written by
Lama Choedak Rinpoche was a huge success this year. We re-published two of
Rinpoche’s bestselling books, Meditation on White Tara and Original Virtue.
• We made our annual donation to the Nalendra Nunnery in Tibet, raising $1967.00 to
ensure the nuns of this community had access to food, water and gas for heating.
Environmental considerations The Society is taking a leading role with regard to the public health issue around use of candles
and incense. The Thai health ministry has issued guidelines on incense use in temples,
requesting its citizens to cease burning incense and ritual money to protect the environment
because incense smoke has been shown to contain multiple known carcinogens and toxic
substances. Heeding these concerns, the Society ceased using wax candles and has ceased using
incense except for very limited specific rituals. Candles were replaced with electronic
rechargeable candles. We have saved thousands of candles from being burned from this
investment.
Additionally, the Society engages its environmental responsibilities at a ground level by:
• Recycling at all centers
11 Annual Report 2016-2017
May 2017
• Environmentally sensitive cleaning products, including general cleaning, laundry, and
dishwashing, being used at all centres, including Thank You hand-wash at Evatt and
Virupa.
• Recycled paper products, including kitchen paper and toilet paper used exclusively at all
retreat centres.
• Solar panels maintained at Virupa and SIBA.
• Wherever possible, printing of books, Dharma texts, advertising material and other
miscellaneous printed matter is on 100% recycled paper using vegetable inks and
powered by 100% solar energy (Courtesy of Black Rainbow Bairnsdale).
• Soft plastics are recycled via RedCycle
• Also, our Virupa Retreat centre has been gained numerous land accreditations this year:
o Land for Wildlife (NSW Government),
o Wildlife Land Trust (Humane Society International), and
o the 2017 Palerang Council weed inspection report indicated Virupa had
“Outstanding weed control”.
Financial Reports The Society accounts were externally audited by Les Ellis and Associates Pty.
We are happy to report the financial situation of the society remains strong, recording a net
profit of $72,103.00
Please see attached Balance Sheets and Profit and Loss Statements for this financial year.
