SPIE Optics + Photonics 2016 (Travel grant)August 28th, 2016

On August 2016, some members of our student chapter attended the SPIE Optics +Photonics Congress held in San Diego, California, where they met students from otherchapters, participated in the Leadership Workshop and the Optics Outreach Games, andpresented the result of their master project. Also they presented the chapter poster ofannual activities.

Coffee Science (Activity grant)October 19th, 2016 (Starting date)

The Coffee Science has place in our university, on open places to make the talk sofriendly. This is the event where researchers, teachers and students of different degreesshare experience in science, study and personal life. The researchers are interviewed bychapter members, asking elaborated and casual questions about their memories inscience, education and life and advices about how to make science.

Exposition "Playing with Photons: Painting the Light” at ThePublic Library of Jalisco

This event was a funny exposition for people of every age about how the light iscomposed and how is possible to see colors. The exposition took place in the publiclibrary "Juan José Arreola and it had explained experiments about light, which were goodreceived by the present attendees, who got interested in science.

The Ph.D Geoff Andersen came to our university as part of the SPIE Visiting LectureProgram. During his instance in Guadalajara he gave two conferences and one workshop,to student members he also visited some touristic places around the university. At theend there was a informal meeting with Geoff and some student members to eat sometortas ahogadas. General numbers:

The Ph.D Miguel A. Alonso from the University of Rochester came to our university as partof the OSA Traveling Lecturer Program, giving to the student chapter two conferences andone workshop to student members. He also visited some touristic places around ouruniversity. At the end there was an informal meeting with Miguel and some studentmembers visiting a bar-restaurant.

OSA & SPIE Winter workshops (Activity grant)

These workshops were organized by chapter members. There were six workshops. Thesubjects were: PCB design with Eagle, data acquisition with arduino, Simulation ofelectronics circuits on QUCS, Introduction to 3D design and CNC and 3D desing withOpenSCAD. The workshop’s teachers were chapter’s members and one University of Guadalajara’sstudent. The main idea was transmit knowledge of some tools used for scientific andtechnological projects. We had attendees from different careers and scholar degrees.

General numbers: 60 people attendees. 5 workshops. 100 hours of courses.

Visiting the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE)

March 15th - 17th, 2017Tonantzintla, Puebla, México

The National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics held the “Meeting of Students in Optics” and twenty-two members of our chapter attended. There were also exposition of posters about projects made by the students from different chapters of Mexico. Also, the INAOE made tour and conferences for the students to show their laboratories and what they are working on in INAOE.

“Our Daily Science” with PhD. Alfredo Aranda Fernández April 3rd, 2017

Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico.

The PhD. Alfredo Aranda Fernández is a researcher and a professor in the University ofColima, Mexico. His research fields are focused of the design and study of models of theparticles, Higgs phenomenology, neutrino masses, and many other things related toessentials structures of the matter in the universe.

He was the first researcher guest on the first edition of Our Daily Science, giving theconference “Higgs, quarks, neutrinos and all that we are made of”.

The workshop’s teachers were chapter’s members and University of Guadalajara’steachers. The main idea was transmit knowledge of some tools used for scientific andtechnological projects. We had attendees from different careers and scholar degrees.

Science for Kids 2017July 7th, 2017

Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico.In this annual event, we invited children between twelve and fifteen years old to visit ourcampus (CUCEI), play and learn some physic, chemistry, engineering and math withdifferent activities in every workshop.

As every year, we gave speeches to kids and we took a group photo with them and thistime we took a photo with the members. General numbers:

This event was a illustrative exposition for people of every age about how the light iscomposed and how is possible to see the world as we see it. The exposition took place inthe public library "Juan José Arreola and it had explained experiments about lightcomposition and how it interacts with the environment, which answered typical kid’squestions of why the world has that colors.

Planned activities for the future(September 2017 - October 2018)

Visiting Lecture/Traveling Lecturer ProgramDescription: Thanks to the SPIE Visiting Lecture Program and the OSA Traveling Lecture Program,the chapter will organize a couple of conferences with researchers from other countries as someother activities as workshops and social meetings with the chapter and the invited researcher.

Chapter meetingDescription: To improve the relationship between our chapter members, this winter will be a“Posada”, a party for all the members and people willing to be part of the chapter.

National meeting OSA & SPIE Student ChaptersDescription: To improve the relationship between all the chapters around our nation, next yearwe’re planning a national meeting of chapters in our university as an opportunity to get to knoweach other, visit researching centers, make poster exposition of student’s projects, coffeescience’s events ans social meetings with other chapter members.

FOCUS Conferences 2017Description: Involving the National Meeting OSA & SPIE Student Chapters and the 1° NationalScientific Story Contest, our student chapter is planning to realize a FOCUS Conference in ourUniversity to organize a big event of scientific diffusion, having conferences, workshops, speeches,projects exposition, visit the IAM (Institute of Astronomy and Meteorology), the national scientificstory contest and more.

1° National Scientific Story Contest Description: With support of others student chapters in Mexico, we will realize the first nationalscientific story contest where student from middle school will redact a story about every scientificknowledge area as physics, optics, photonics, chemistry, and biology.There will be a local contest in the cities where the student chapters are supporting to this event,ather the best stories will compit nationally in the FOCUS 2017 in different categories.

Our Daily ScienceDescription: Our daily Science is a new event of Scientific Diffusion where researchers giveconference with more detail about their fields on researching in a simple way to understand. This conferences will be given in our university and every undergraduate, master and doctoratestudents and free to attend and ask about every doubt and restlessness they could have about theconference.

Visit to the IAM (Institute of Astronomy and Meteorology)Description: As part of the FOCUS Conference, is planned to visit the Institute of Astronomy andMeteorology with the Mexican student chapters which attended to the FOCUS Conference in ourUniversity. In the IAM there will be some exposition and tour around this researching center.

Expositions at th Public Library of JaliscoDescription: This event takes place in a well-known and very visited library of Jalisco where weattend to present to kids funny expositions related to light, accompanying this with experimentwhere the kids will participate to understand the exposition and they realized how the science maybe fun if you play with it.

Science for kidsDescription: This annual event is the biggest diffusion event the have in our university, we tryevery year to give to kids some interesting workshops to encourages to kids from junior high tosee the science from a different perspective and they decide later to aspire for a career in science.

Coffee Science MXDescription: Informal talk with a guest lecturer, at an open and outdoors place for students,teachers and researchers to share experiences in science, study and personal life. Free coffee andteach to play Khet to gather new students. This is an event that we plan to organize on a monthlybasis. Besides it is a national project in Mexico.
